To think that girl's and women's swimsuits are sexualised

Why should I have to make sure I've tidied my pubic hair before going swimming? None of my other clothes cut so close to my genitalia.
Is it about aerodynamics? (the swim shorts worn by most men definitely aren't)
Or were they designed by men and now we're all just conforming to societal norms?

Why do women have to do gymnastics in leotards with no knickers underneath and remove all their pubic hair, while men can wear unitards or shorts and vest? For whose benefit is it?

Perhaps it's a case that men want to wear leotards too?

But isn’t that you sexualising it. No one cares really.

My swimsuit looks like a dust cover for a Panzer tank, nothing sexual unless you are kinky for WW2 military vehicles.

Ha ha! Mine looks like the skirt from a scrapped hovercraft.

DeclineandFall · 22/09/2023 10:06

I think you're right OP. I hate legsuits and want something to cover my arse rather than hoiking my suit out of it. There's a a swimdress in Decathlon where the skirt is short and not flouncy but is enough to cover my arse and stray pubes but doesn't impeded the swimming. It also has a good high back and sturdy straps to help decent tit support . I buy these in bulk. They don't last more than 3 months but then I'm in the pool 5 times a week. And they're cheap. They are out of stock at the minute which is worrying me.
My dream swimsuit would be almost like a 50s style with the body material coming down just to cover your bum and bits but built for proper swimming. Plain black or navy. I bet middle aged lady swimmers everywhere would buy them.

MargotBamborough · 22/09/2023 10:09

Something like this should do the job, OP:

@DeclineandFall This seems to fit the description of what you are looking for perfectly.

InYourHeadZombieeeaeaeaea · 22/09/2023 10:14

Never thought of swimsuits as sexualised tbh. It's just ... Swimsuits. Individual stuff innit.

Most retailers have swimsuits with shorts or skirts. I always wore tankini or swim dresses

AInightingale · 22/09/2023 10:14

I love Decathlon's line that it helps you enjoy the benefits of being in the water while giving you 'peace of mind'.

Christ, what have we come to when most women's exercise gear doesn't give 'peace of mind', that a fashionable cut has to come before fears of indecent exposure? It's sickening, no wonder not enough teenage girls participate in sport.

Whereforartthoudave · 22/09/2023 10:16

There are and always have been very skimpy swimsuits, but there are also ones that cover well and made for proper swimming!
I have always worn a ‘proper’ swimsuit ( just like I refuse to buy shoes that aren’t walkable in!) so you have options.

Fringebangfringe · 22/09/2023 10:20

Yabu - I have a swimsuit with shortie style legs. Sold in many shops. Not hard to find.

StarlightLady · 22/09/2023 10:21

It’s personal choice, there’s plenty of swimwear available with more coverage if that is what you want.

And men’s swimwear in the Olympics etc is pretty brief too!

MissInterpretation · 22/09/2023 10:27

Argh! Yes! I feel so exposed when I go swimming (hardly ever, though) as if I am walking around in my underwear. Much prefer the short bottoms and then I don't have to get rid of the hairs, never mind go through the painful regrowth phase. What a bloody faff.

SkippySkip · 22/09/2023 10:28

Maybe they'll change the rules for women at the next Olympics so that they can wear more suitable clothing if they are menstruating or prefer something else. Like they allow dark shorts at Wimbledon now.

Oakbeam · 22/09/2023 10:33

The vast majority of women's swimwear is revealing, while the vast majority of men's swimwear isn't.

I wonder why that might be

Men wearing budgie smugglers are mercilessly mocked. That could be something to do with it.

I live in France and budgie smugglers are the only type of men's swimwear allowed in public swimming pools for hygiene reasons.

They're on their way back . And men shave their pubes for them too.

Justletpeopleenjoythings · 22/09/2023 11:02

Eh, even before they started making one's with legs I just used to wear boardshorts over my costume.

housethatbuiltme · 22/09/2023 11:26

I buy modesty swimsuits from Asia, its expensive and a pain in the ass as it takes ages to arrive and guessing what Asian size I am is hard.

Bigger issue is TWICE I have been shamed and kicked out of swimming for wearing modesty swimwear:

Once in France on holiday, I swear the French are just perverts the way they went on. They originally approved it (after having to prove to THREE people it was official swimwear not street clothes) then security came and removed me for 'making people uncomfortable'... you know what makes me uncomfortable? the fact you forced my DH to buy and wear a speedo you fucking weirdos and that it makes you uncomfortable that you can't see someones ass.

The other was here in England more shockingly, the life guard called me over with her whistle then asked loudly in front of everyone if I have a 'medical reason' to wear it and that its 'not allowed'.

What is so shocking about my swimwear that would make it ban-able? it has a capped sleeve and skirted bit over shorts like this. (skirted swimsuits aren't even that unusual in the UK its just they usually come in plus size not size 8-10 which I am).

Apparently this is 'dangerous' due to the 'skirt' bit according the the UK lifegaurd and the restriction on the arms yet she never said ANYTHING about my DHs baggy loose fitting board shorts (which was what EVERY man was wearing). Many little girls had on skirted swimsuits and apparently its fine for children and several boys and babies where wearing sleeved rash vests. Complete double standards.

Where?

I have to order stuff online and its bloody expensive. Everything I find in Primark or Asda etc... is Bikinis and swimming costumes that cover NOTHING.

ididntwanttodoit · 22/09/2023 11:32

I wear a rash vest and surf leggings. You can stick a soft supermarket bra underneath if you feel the need for support

housethatbuiltme · 22/09/2023 11:34

Melonandfalafel · 22/09/2023 06:40

I like wearing a normal swim costume.
I have a Hollywood wax.
I don’t think of myself as ‘sexualised’.
This is my choice.

If people want to wear modesty swimwear that’s fine but I like the freedom of wearing little when I’m on the beach, and we should celebrate that women have choices.

Similarly, I like wearing short shorts in Summer and skorts when playing sports.

I support anyone right to wear as they wish regardless of if its a thong or Birkini but it bothers me this doesn't go both ways.

Why is modesty stuff so hard to find, looked down on by many, banned in some places and whenever it comes up some people take it as an attack on them being comfortable in wearing less.

Allowing modest options for those who are uncomfortable walking around in underwear sized clothing does not take away your right to wear a bikini if you wish.

Howtonamechange · 22/09/2023 11:35

Shein do loads of modest options.
I bought one for my 7y old who saw a girl wearing a burkini in her swimming lessons and wanted the same!

She says she likes having a "dress" on. It's got a little short skirt that sits on top of a full sleeve and legging suit.

StarlightLady · 22/09/2023 11:39

So called “modesty” is male controlling. A woman does not have to be modest to be respected.

Decathlon have decent options at a reasonable price point.

The French are very insistent about pool hygiene.

Basically anything that looks like it could be worn on the street is not allowed. They wouldn't think it was legitimate for a man to feel uncomfortable wearing Speedos because that is what all men wear when swimming in France, as well as the obligatory swimming cap for anyone over the age of 3.
