House with sea view for £150k!

I know IABU a little…. But I didn’t think it was possible to buy a house with an amazing sea view in England for £150k and I’ve just done it!!

It’s a gorgeous white fronted, 4 storey, 5 bed Victorian terrace, 200 meters from the beach in NW Cumbria, only 15 mins into the National Lake District Park.

I’ve been a single working mum for the past 20 years, held down a mortgage solo all this time and worked my arse off whilst raising my boy.
Now he’s 20 I can finally give him the childhood I wanted to 🤣

In 2022 I sold my house ‘down south’ at a peak price, and then waited and used the equity to buy this house outright. It’s been a scary leap as I was born and bred down south and had never been further north than Manchester until 2021 when I first came to the Lakes.

The house had been sat on the market for 6 months and so I ended up with 18% off the original asking price!

I wanted to share this, because so many people, like me, post pandemic are looking for a better quality of life and a simpler way of living - I feel I’ve found heaven here! Cost of living is cheaper up here, slower pace of life, strong community feel, tonnes of free things to do - sea, lakes, mountains!!

i’m still pinching myself that it’s actually happened, after all these years I can finally relax and enjoy life.

Except the house is a renovation project so that’ll keep me busy!

I hope I don’t upset anyone by posting, as I know all too well how hard it is when you’re struggling financially - in fact, I worked out if I hadn’t of sold in ‘22 I now wouldn’t be able to afford my mortgage so feeling so grateful I did.

Just wanted to share to inspire others and to share my good news that I can’t share in real life!

Congratulations! Enjoy every minute in your lovely new home. I hope you and your ds are y happy there! Lovely part of the world.

AnnaTortoiseshell · 21/09/2023 15:28

I hope you’ve ignored that absurd post about ‘older people’ living in villages! Congratulations, OP! What a fabulous achievement.

almondflake · 21/09/2023 15:36

What a lovely post , how fantastic for you to have found your perfect home , lots a lovely times ahead for you . Big hugs and best wishes 🤗

PriOn1 · 21/09/2023 15:38

How wonderful. What a beautiful place.

You’ve also inspired me as I’m looking at a renovation prospect house that’s also been empty and I hadn’t even considered asking 18% lower than the asking price. Definitely something to think about!

omg. Im actually wondering if it’s the one my mum was born in?! Im going to have to name change after this thread! Before you rip the shelves out in the downstairs loo can you see what’s written on them?

Tagging @MiddleagedBeachbum so that she sees this post. How amazing if it turns out to be the same house!

Hippopotaperson · 21/09/2023 17:31

@XpelairHamPortal it’s unlikely but you never know. I know the name of the row of terraces but can’t remember the no., although I can take a stab at it.

cuddlebear · 21/09/2023 17:37

Congratulations OP. I hope it works out brilliantly for you.

As a note to anyone else desperate to live by the sea but struggling to make it work, I managed to buy a house within five minutes walk of the beach in Sussex, for £250k not long ago.

HOW??!!! You cry!!

It is an absolutely tiny one bed cottage. So not everyone’s cup of tea, and some wouldn’t think the space compromise is worth it, but to me it’s heaven.

PoppityBoo · 21/09/2023 17:50

Nothing else to say except that I LOVE this thread! Happiness is contagious and yours has made me smile today. X

it's just good to know that there are lots of places in the UK where you can get propoerty for under 200K and it's not in a sink estate and the schools aren't terrible. I'm chuffed for you OP and good luck with renovation. It's amazing what dumping the junk and a good clean can achieve

When your living costs are much lower having less money coming in doesn't always make you poorer a person with a net income of £3000 a month paying £1500 rent is worse off than someone else on £2000K with £800 rent

Oh I’d love my dsis to move! I keep hinting at it 🤣

Dsis introduced me to mumsnet so hoping she sees this!

If I could move @MiddleagedBeachbum I would it was brilliant when we lived down the road from each other.

We all really miss you 😭 But it's the right thing for you.

Instead I'll have to put up with stalking you on MN instead of turning up at your door.

And visiting your lovely new home 😚

You are definitely BU for moving away from your sister. But YANBU for following your dream.

Awww love you!

Yes I don’t have your shower to use when I rip mine out nor you to cook me dinner anymore when I have no kitchen! 😭

@Hippopotaperson there actually isn’t a downstairs toilet so I don’t think it can be. Its Grecian Terrace if that’s any help :)

Aww so many lovely responses! Thank you!

Yes, there’s also plenty of well paid jobs up here as a pp said!

Please do try to become a part of your new community, use the shop, join groups etc. Older people buying up homes so often kills villages where we are, with no kids for the school etc. Congratulations on your house purchase Flowers

FFS - "older people" - with a son of 20, OP is presumably around 45-55 - hardly decrepit. Maybe people don't mix with the local community wherever you are because the locals are so bloody rude and ageist.

Congratulations OP - enjoy.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 21/09/2023 22:37

This is my absolute dream - so envious.

As for the rubbish clearance, all Marras love a tip run!

Just ask on a local fbook page and there'll be a queue of jam eaters at the door ready to go!

Marra, she'll need the Whitehaven FB page for skip-ratching jameaters, not Workington Wink

Been a busy few days unpacking and cleaning the old house but finally settled in, as much as we can until renovations start!

This mornings beach walk made it all worth it, found some lovely sea glass and a perfectly round bit too!

I collect sea glass too, and I bought a fabulous old glass bottle from a charity shop which I top up with the prettiest chunks of sea glass. It casts dancing rainbows all over the kitchen when the sunlight catches it.

Ooh what a great idea thanks! Been searching for ideas as I collect so much of it :)
