House with sea view for £150k!

I know IABU a little…. But I didn’t think it was possible to buy a house with an amazing sea view in England for £150k and I’ve just done it!!

It’s a gorgeous white fronted, 4 storey, 5 bed Victorian terrace, 200 meters from the beach in NW Cumbria, only 15 mins into the National Lake District Park.

I’ve been a single working mum for the past 20 years, held down a mortgage solo all this time and worked my arse off whilst raising my boy.
Now he’s 20 I can finally give him the childhood I wanted to 🤣

In 2022 I sold my house ‘down south’ at a peak price, and then waited and used the equity to buy this house outright. It’s been a scary leap as I was born and bred down south and had never been further north than Manchester until 2021 when I first came to the Lakes.

The house had been sat on the market for 6 months and so I ended up with 18% off the original asking price!

I wanted to share this, because so many people, like me, post pandemic are looking for a better quality of life and a simpler way of living - I feel I’ve found heaven here! Cost of living is cheaper up here, slower pace of life, strong community feel, tonnes of free things to do - sea, lakes, mountains!!

i’m still pinching myself that it’s actually happened, after all these years I can finally relax and enjoy life.

Except the house is a renovation project so that’ll keep me busy!

I hope I don’t upset anyone by posting, as I know all too well how hard it is when you’re struggling financially - in fact, I worked out if I hadn’t of sold in ‘22 I now wouldn’t be able to afford my mortgage so feeling so grateful I did.

Just wanted to share to inspire others and to share my good news that I can’t share in real life!

Oooh thank you, just followed them :)

I'm down the road from them, they have both worked so hard on the house, it's now open for bookings to stay in.
Also on BBC iplayer there is a 6 part series called Accidental Renovators which followed them through the first year or so, it's a great watch and I'm hoping there will be a follow up programme now they've finished.
Good luck with your new home too.

Please do try to become a part of your new community, use the shop, join groups etc. Older people buying up homes so often kills villages where we are, with no kids for the school etc. Congratulations on your house purchase Flowers

Massive ageism on MN, again.

Ooh lucky you - best of luck!

Pumpkinpie1 · 21/09/2023 11:30

Where I live locals are being priced out of home ownership because of people moving north and inflating house prices. It’s sad the government is forcing people to move because it doesn’t have a competent affordable housing policy

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 21/09/2023 11:31

Congratulations!!! 💐

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/09/2023 11:32

This is so inspiring, it's exactly what I want to do and with a similar budget. I'm really happy for your OP, I hope that I can do the same 😊

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 21/09/2023 11:32

Movinghouseatlast · 21/09/2023 10:16

Fantastic! What a view that is.

I would love a sea view. We live 5 minutes walk to the sea, there is a beautiful view as soon as I walk out of my front gate but there's nothing like being able to see it from the house.

My parents have a tiny holiday house overlooking sea in South of France- It’s wonderful seeing the sea in all its moods - a view that is so soothing and restful .
well done @MiddleagedBeachbum x

Zanatdy · 21/09/2023 11:37

I’m seriously thinking of leaving the southeast and heading back up north once youngest leaves school in 3yrs. I can’t afford to live in the South East

Nakedness · 21/09/2023 11:37

Congratulations OP! Very inspiring

Alleycat1 · 21/09/2023 11:41

How wonderful! I hope you will be very happy in your new location.

Andthereyougo · 21/09/2023 11:43

Congrats. Enjoy your new home.

secom · 21/09/2023 11:43

Congratulations OP! Can't beat the sea.

Must object to @OhNoForever's comment though. OP isn't "buying up". It's her hard worked for home.

BuddhaAtSea · 21/09/2023 11:43

How wonderful!!!
You do know we’re all invested now and want to see the progress you’re making! Please keep this thread going!
