House with sea view for £150k!

I know IABU a little…. But I didn’t think it was possible to buy a house with an amazing sea view in England for £150k and I’ve just done it!!

It’s a gorgeous white fronted, 4 storey, 5 bed Victorian terrace, 200 meters from the beach in NW Cumbria, only 15 mins into the National Lake District Park.

I’ve been a single working mum for the past 20 years, held down a mortgage solo all this time and worked my arse off whilst raising my boy.
Now he’s 20 I can finally give him the childhood I wanted to 🤣

In 2022 I sold my house ‘down south’ at a peak price, and then waited and used the equity to buy this house outright. It’s been a scary leap as I was born and bred down south and had never been further north than Manchester until 2021 when I first came to the Lakes.

The house had been sat on the market for 6 months and so I ended up with 18% off the original asking price!

I wanted to share this, because so many people, like me, post pandemic are looking for a better quality of life and a simpler way of living - I feel I’ve found heaven here! Cost of living is cheaper up here, slower pace of life, strong community feel, tonnes of free things to do - sea, lakes, mountains!!

i’m still pinching myself that it’s actually happened, after all these years I can finally relax and enjoy life.

Except the house is a renovation project so that’ll keep me busy!

I hope I don’t upset anyone by posting, as I know all too well how hard it is when you’re struggling financially - in fact, I worked out if I hadn’t of sold in ‘22 I now wouldn’t be able to afford my mortgage so feeling so grateful I did.

Just wanted to share to inspire others and to share my good news that I can’t share in real life!

How fabulous! We downsized when DC left home and bought a house with a sea view in North Wales. The sunrises and sunsets are worth every penny of the money we've had to throw at it to turn it into our dream home, and being able to walk on the beach every single day is utter bliss.

I wouldn't swap my little house by the sea for the most expensive penthouse flat in any city in the world.

roaringmouse · 21/09/2023 12:42

What a lovely story OP. Thank you for posting and well done for everything you've achieved for you and your DS. Wishing you both every happiness in your new place by the sea 😊.

CountZacular · 21/09/2023 12:44

GoryBory · 21/09/2023 12:47

Lovely! Are you in Whitehaven by any chance? I grew up there.

LunaTheCat · 21/09/2023 13:04

OP Cumbria is one of my most favourite places.
May your home be filled with warmth and love, with good food, wine, and friends from your previous life and friends to be.

Mikimoto · 21/09/2023 13:06

Incredibly exciting project!
Just buy some Bose noise-cancelling headphones to block out the local accent 😂

ZickZack · 21/09/2023 13:06

Congrats, op. Looks beautiful

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 21/09/2023 13:13

lovely well done

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 21/09/2023 13:14

Please do try to become a part of your new community, use the shop, join groups etc. Older people buying up homes so often kills villages where we are, with no kids for the school etc

Can you tell us where we ARE allowed to live, then? and presumably everyone in your villages moves out when their children are grown up?

Congratulations OP. A sea view like that is my dream.

OCDmama · 21/09/2023 13:16

Congratulations!! What a lovely story.

piscofrisco · 21/09/2023 13:19

Love this. I wish you every happiness there

nettie434 · 21/09/2023 13:22

What an amazing post. It's not just the house purchase. It's the culmination of how you have managed over the past 20 years or so. It's going to be a wonderful house. Let's hope that in a few years time you are posting about how you have so many visitors that you never seem to get a break!

Toddlerteaplease · 21/09/2023 13:23

My parents have just moved close to the Lake District NP and are having an absolute ball!

GirlOfTudor · 21/09/2023 13:37

I just wanted to say congratulations! That sunset is beautiful!

duringthewarrodney · 21/09/2023 13:38

Aw, well done and what an exciting project for you!

Enjoy the views and your new home.

muddyboots · 21/09/2023 13:40

Welcome to Cumbria!
You won't regret it. Until you need to order a takeaway to be delivered or use an airport...but even then you still won't really regret it!

idrinkandiknowthings · 21/09/2023 13:41

Ahhhh, that's wonderful, congratulations it looks like a beautiful spot. I hope you and your son are very happy there x

Where I live locals are being priced out of home ownership because of people moving north and inflating house prices. It’s sad the government is forcing people to move because it doesn’t have a competent affordable housing policy

This is a really positive thread overall so I don't want to derail. Please can we not go there with the 'newcomers inflating house prices' thing. I bet I'd have similar if I moved back to Sheffield from London even though I was born and raised there. People are allowed to move! But I agree that failure to provide affordable housing harms everyone.

ferretface · 21/09/2023 13:46

Also to say congrats to the OP, enjoy your lovely new house!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/09/2023 13:46

@MiddleagedBeachbum your joy oozes out of your posts. I wish you and your son the very happiest of endings!

Wetblanket78 · 21/09/2023 13:46

@MiddleagedBeachbum

Congratulations, this is a lovely story!

@OhNoForever

Wishing you the same luck as the OP with finding your dream inner-city home when the time comes. I'm assuming that you'll be moving out to make room for a younger family, thus preventing your village being 'killed' by pensioners? I won't be doing the same, by the way.
