House with sea view for £150k!

I know IABU a little…. But I didn’t think it was possible to buy a house with an amazing sea view in England for £150k and I’ve just done it!!

It’s a gorgeous white fronted, 4 storey, 5 bed Victorian terrace, 200 meters from the beach in NW Cumbria, only 15 mins into the National Lake District Park.

I’ve been a single working mum for the past 20 years, held down a mortgage solo all this time and worked my arse off whilst raising my boy.
Now he’s 20 I can finally give him the childhood I wanted to 🤣

In 2022 I sold my house ‘down south’ at a peak price, and then waited and used the equity to buy this house outright. It’s been a scary leap as I was born and bred down south and had never been further north than Manchester until 2021 when I first came to the Lakes.

The house had been sat on the market for 6 months and so I ended up with 18% off the original asking price!

I wanted to share this, because so many people, like me, post pandemic are looking for a better quality of life and a simpler way of living - I feel I’ve found heaven here! Cost of living is cheaper up here, slower pace of life, strong community feel, tonnes of free things to do - sea, lakes, mountains!!

i’m still pinching myself that it’s actually happened, after all these years I can finally relax and enjoy life.

Except the house is a renovation project so that’ll keep me busy!

I hope I don’t upset anyone by posting, as I know all too well how hard it is when you’re struggling financially - in fact, I worked out if I hadn’t of sold in ‘22 I now wouldn’t be able to afford my mortgage so feeling so grateful I did.

Just wanted to share to inspire others and to share my good news that I can’t share in real life!

Please do try to become a part of your new community, use the shop, join groups etc. Older people buying up homes so often kills villages where we are, with no kids for the school etc

Can you tell us where we ARE allowed to live, then? and presumably everyone in your villages moves out when their children are grown up?

Congratulations OP. A sea view like that is my dream.

Indeed! In my village it is mostly not the people busy with young children who keep the village alive by sitting on the parish council, organising the annual week-long feast, flower rota in church, supporting the village pub, producing the monthly parish magazine and the welcome pack for new residents, running and taking bookings for the village hall, etc etc

Well done you. It's lovely.

Wineisnottheanswer · 21/09/2023 13:59

Good luck
can I ask how old you are.
?

nebulae · 21/09/2023 14:00

Lovely thread. Congrats OP, I hope you'll be very happy there.

We moved to a house with an amazing sea view a couple of years ago. It's so calming, the view changes by the hour and there's so much wildlife. I never tire of looking at it.

Massive ageism on MN, again.

Even if its not direct ageism to OP (bearing in mind with a 20 year old son she could likely be in her 40s or even late 30s) it's a bizarre comment - the suggestion that only young people with children add value to a community or deserve to live in nice places? Should anyone over 45 or childfree just fuck off to inner city flats?

Local village schools are closing because the birthrate in the country as a whole has decreased over the last few decades not because "outsiders" are moving into your precious community.

Sorry to derail op, just thought that was an unnecessarily nasty (and irrelevant) comment. Congratulations on your house, £150k is am amazing price, I live in a "cheaper" part of the UK and even here you'd never get a house that size so close to the sea!

Do you like sea swimming? I'd recommend joining the local bluetits or other wild swimming group as a good way to meet lovely people!

Haha I hear you about the rain and weather!!

I was just telling my sister - it’s a gorgeous calm sunny day today…. The past 3 days whilst I’ve been logging furniture in and out has been wild, sideways torrential rain and wind that was blowing stuff out of our hands!

But yes, oh my goodness how beautiful is this area and the people are so friendly.
My neighbour has already offered to fix the log burner, chop wood for me and free tomatoes and potatoes from
his field :)

This sounds so fantastic! I can also hear the sheer joy in your voice. I bet the view of the sea will be magnificent on a stormy day when you’re sitting by your cosy woodburner. Will you have your living room on an upper floor to get the best view?
what a stressful 6 months it must have been waiting for it to complete!!

VivaDixie · 21/09/2023 14:06

I just want to join this wonderful positive thread to say CONGRATULATIONS I am so happy for you and your son Flowers

And yes - please do start an instagram account!

Congratulations and well done @MiddleagedBeachbum I moved from a large Yorkshire city to the north east coast in 2020 in between lock downs during pandemic and love it up here!
I have been a single parent since 1998, there was no capital from the marriage and I worked hard to buy my own house which I sold and like you I'm now mortgage free, though to a smaller property with a huge garden. I have an adult child with LD's who lives with me, we moved to be closer to my other child, partner and my grandchildren to have a better quality of life and it hasn't disappointed!!
Enjoy your new home x

Erdinger · 21/09/2023 14:16

Wonderful . Not much can beat a sea view. Hope your renovations go well and you enjoy your fabulous home.

randomchap · 21/09/2023 14:22

Ennerdale Country House Hotel, which is the other side of Cockermouth used to do a decent Sunday lunch. This was a while ago though so might not be that good any more

Enjoy the hot sandwiches from Booths. A Cumberland swirl in a bun is lovely

How lovely! I'm delighted for you

How beautiful and this gives me hope!
Thank you for sharing, enjoy it x

Hellokittymania · 21/09/2023 14:44

I’m so happy for you, well done. I don’t have a property that overlooks the sea front, but it does have a view of the mountains. When the sun is setting, and it’s nice weather, it’s beautiful. I’m sure you will keep very busy with the renovations, I haven’t come to that point in my journey just yet.

MiddleagedBeachbum · 21/09/2023 14:45

Thank you so much for all the lovely comments.
Ive not had chance to catch up on them all as I’ve been for a lovely long walk on the beach, met more new neighbours who’ve given me veg from their allotment, I’m joining the big potato dig next weekend at their field - I then saw this van parked outside and thought how fitting :)

"Have you found a job as sure that's one thing that puts people off moving

Not finding a job easily in new location"

That's the beauty of west Cumbria. Well paid jobs by the bucket load!

SoSo99 · 21/09/2023 14:51

So happy for you! And well done for pulling it off!

Kissmas · 21/09/2023 14:55

As for the rubbish clearance, all Marras love a tip run!

Just ask on a local fbook page and there'll be a queue of jam eaters at the door ready to go!

Giggorata · 21/09/2023 15:04

I'm so happy for you and that all your hard work has paid off, and you now have this fabulous home!

I also know how it feels to move north for a better life for the children but missing your relations, friends and old life.
The only solution is to build a better life where you are now, but also having people from the old life to stay from time to time, especially as you have the seaside and a bigger house to offer.
That's what we did and as long as they all pull their weight, food and housework wise, it works well.
We've just waved goodbye to friends of 50 years, who came to visit last week. 😀

Hippopotaperson · 21/09/2023 15:07

omg. Im actually wondering if it’s the one my mum was born in?! Im going to have to name change after this thread! Before you rip the shelves out in the downstairs loo can you see what’s written on them?

StormzyinaTCup · 21/09/2023 15:09

Wow OP what a view ❤️
Congratulations and I hope you enjoy many, many happy years there 🍾💐

jardy · 21/09/2023 15:12
