Anyone else get guilt for being “boring” on holiday?

amiboring05 · 20/09/2023 16:35

It’s my DP and I’s first night away on holiday (with friends!) tonight and we’re both very tired from the travelling we did earlier today.
We are only here 5 nights and so I feel we should be making the most of our time here by going out for dinner, but we are really really tired so I suggested we use the hotel spa and grab a McDonald’s or something light.
But there’s so many beautiful restaurants and views I feel like it’s wasted as we’re only here 5 days.

But DP is literally falling asleep next to me and starting to snore as we speak.
Our friends are going for dinner and we feel silly not going, but even they said we seem shattered and should rest up before the rest of the week.

Anyone else feel guilty for being “boring” on holiday and how do I stop this?

I get around it by holidaying either on my own, or with really close friends or my adult DC, who know how boring I am.

43ontherocksporfavor · 20/09/2023 16:37

I normally feel like that but have a little nap and then get ready and force myself out. Then normally feel fine once I’m out. You can sleep all night!

amiboring05 · 20/09/2023 16:38

That’s exactly what I’m thinking. But then I don’t want to ruin the rest of the holiday by not listening to my body!

Why don’t you just go for an early tea in one of the lovely restaurants and then go home? Probably just as much effort as a McDonald’s, and you’ll be starving again in no time and not sleep.

Dont feel guilty if it’s what you really want to do, but don’t have regrets if you’re just there for 5 days. You can get McDonalds anytime!

Purplewarrior · 20/09/2023 16:40

Yeah, to be fair, I would rather go without than eat McDonalds on holiday 😂

GypsyTartForSchoolLunch · 20/09/2023 16:40

Going to bed early is one thing but eating McDonalds on holiday is off the scale!!!!

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 20/09/2023 16:42

Why would you go away with friends if you just wanted to mooch and sleep?!
You can do that any evening/weekend!!

Have a quick nap and get yourself out and for a meal.

PostItInABook · 20/09/2023 16:42

I wish people would reframe what it means to be ‘boring’. Doing what you want and/or need is not boring. Doing something different to others is not boring if it’s what you want to do.

It’s like when people describe someone else as miserable because they don’t happen to enjoy the same types of activities or people.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/09/2023 16:43

I am wildly adventurous and exciting on holiday. Wildly. But f I feel like comfort food and a nap, that's what I do. I've eaten KFC in Kenya, McDonalds in Laos, you get my drift. Sometimes you need a rest.

However, tomorrow, make yourself go out. There is a temptation to stay in your comfort zone so you have to fight that.

43ontherocksporfavor · 20/09/2023 17:00

OP not sure what time zone you’re in but if Europe surely you can rest now and go out later? You’ll be able to sleep at night .

RoachFish · 20/09/2023 17:00

What kind of travelling have you done? People can be tired for any reason I guess but on holiday I tend to just soldier through. I can sleep at night and I'd rather have a lie-in than an early night. Especially if I'm with friends.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 20/09/2023 17:07

Fuck no. Embrace the boring, at least on the first night

CMOTDibbler · 20/09/2023 17:18

Its a holiday. Do whatever feels right to leave you feeling more rested at the end of it than when you started. If just grabbing something easy and familiar tonight, having a bed picnic and a really good nights sleep will put you in a better place for tomorrow, then thats what you should do.

IGuessNotThen · 20/09/2023 17:20

It’s up to you how you do your own holiday, try not to worry about others perception of you but I know that’s easier said than done x

Pashazade · 20/09/2023 17:20

It's YOUR holiday do whatever you damn well please. You spent the money you get to chose how you spend the time.

Goldbar · 21/09/2023 10:08

You should do what you want on holiday and I agree completely that you don't always need to be busy to have a good holiday.

But maybe rethink going with friends? I think it's important that everyone on holiday shares the same expectations and, if you prefer to slob out, probably best not to go with 'busy beaver' type of people who prefer to be doing stuff the whole time.

Jem123456789 · 21/09/2023 13:37

Would you feel the same if you weren’t with your friends? My DH and I went away for 6 nights and due to a very early flight we were in bed asleep by 7pm the first evening (helped by a late lunch and jug of sangria!). We felt great for the rest of the trip. No regrets!

Usernamen · 21/09/2023 13:41

I avoid being forced to go out even though I’m tired by only ever holidaying with DP or travelling solo.

I simply refuse to cater to anyone else’s whims/preferences (in life generally, but especially on holiday).

This is also one of the reasons I don’t have a large group of friends / generally don’t socialise in groups of more than 3!

tattygrl · 21/09/2023 13:42

Get the maccies. Savour the early night/nap. Then tomorrow, enjoy the day however you please.

Scruffington · 21/09/2023 13:43

what time was it in your holiday location when you posted this?

Seeing as you're there for such a short time my instinct would be nap, then shower, then out the door.

But it's your life and if you're content doing mcdonalds and sleep then do that.

septemberoctobernovember · 21/09/2023 13:44

no way would I be going to eat mcdonalds on holiday when there are lovely restaurants and views. Have a nap and go out with your friends. Or go for an early dinner and then to bed

TheLuckyOnes · 21/09/2023 13:44

Well, you do you, obviously, but I'd shoot myself rather than eat McDonald's on holiday. Maybe the issue is the evident mismatch of your preferences/levels of energy and that of your friends? Unless, obviously, they live far closer to your holiday destination, and didn't do anywhere near the same amount of travelling.

margotrose · 21/09/2023 13:46

Personally I would have had a shower, gone out for a wander, had an early dinner and then gone to bed.

I love a McDonald's but there's no way I'd have one when I was on holiday and there were loads of lovely local places to eat.

Eh?

I've done that three times arriving in a new place late on the first evening. McDs being nearby and not knowing where else to go, having to speak a different language. It can just be the easy, low effort option. And our teenagers are delighted with the idea.

It's your holiday, do what you like.

YANBU, but you're being extremely OTT saying going out for dinner when you're tired is going to ruin your holiday. What do you mean listen to your body?

You're tired, not ill.
