Anyone else get guilt for being “boring” on holiday?

It’s my DP and I’s first night away on holiday (with friends!) tonight and we’re both very tired from the travelling we did earlier today.
We are only here 5 nights and so I feel we should be making the most of our time here by going out for dinner, but we are really really tired so I suggested we use the hotel spa and grab a McDonald’s or something light.
But there’s so many beautiful restaurants and views I feel like it’s wasted as we’re only here 5 days.

But DP is literally falling asleep next to me and starting to snore as we speak.
Our friends are going for dinner and we feel silly not going, but even they said we seem shattered and should rest up before the rest of the week.

Anyone else feel guilty for being “boring” on holiday and how do I stop this?

Depends where you are, if you are in Italy ,Spain or Portugal go and have a nap then get up , have a shower and go out to eat. If you are in Dorset or wild wales go out and eat quickly because there won’t be much left open after 7.

Tell your friends you're knackered and you hope they have a nice time eating out.

Then, don't go on holiday with friends again, it's just hassle.

I need to know if OP is:

25 in Lanzarote
19 on the Isle of Wight

If you arrive really late, then yep do Maccas - it has a place. But if its still reasonably early, Maccas is just being lazy.

Such hatred for McDonalds ! My view is if you're tired and unlikely to enjoy a meal out then do whatever is cheapest/least hassle. No point spending 50-100 euros on a meal if you're not in a fit state for it.

Fartooold · 21/09/2023 17:38

The whole point of a holiday is doing what you want. What is right for you at that moment.
It's not an Instagram moment, it's what YOU want.
You have a whole holiday to explore local cuisines and customs, just relax, enjoy and sod the rest 😆

A lot of the McDonalds restaurants in Europe have gluten free buns for burgers, so I always try to sample. Being able to walk into a fast food restaurant and order something is amazing for me as a celiac 😂 Definitely holiday worthy

Macdonals tonight, restaurants the other nights.
But more importantly, no mumsnet on holiday. Pretend it's the 00s and it's really expensive to use your phone abroad.

Lastchancechica · 21/09/2023 17:56

You are allowed to do exactly what you want to do 🥱

DanielsDancingMonkey · 21/09/2023 18:00

We take the “you can sleep when you are dead” attitude to holidays, even with the children, and we pack loads in. Fortunately any friends we holiday with take the same view.

I wouldn’t go on holiday with anyone who didn’t have the same attitude, but we discuss this beforehand so there are no surprises.

Mariposista · 21/09/2023 18:25

One of the main thing about holidays with a group is to all be on the same page.
It just won't work if one wants to chill and do nothing and another wants to paint the town red (both valid holiday approaches of course). But not compatible with each other and someone will end up pissed off.

It tastes bafflingly disgusting. I don't think I'd been in a McDonalds since my teens until I ended up there with my young DS and his friends on the way back from an under 12's match last year. I thought I would eat something and finally understand the appeal -- I honestly thought it would probably be delicious in a 'don't eat this too often' kind of way, but it was weirdly sweet, soggy and sort of apologetic, without much flavour. I still don't get it.

That sounds like a bizarre McDonald's to be fair, the sweetness is odd? Never noticed that.
I don't eat red meat, so usually have the chicken selects - crunchy and reasonably tasty, or fish. Fries are ... fries. I do miss their chickpea burgers, loved those, there is too much red pepper in the replacements. I also don't mind a Flurry.

I'd actually rather have an Indian or Chinese takeaway, but they are all awful where we are. Gristley chicken, dodgy colours and expensive😫

McDonald’s is always sweet. The bun is sweet, the sauces are sweet.

girlfriend44 · 21/09/2023 20:26

McDonald's on holiday no way?
