Anyone else get guilt for being “boring” on holiday?

It’s my DP and I’s first night away on holiday (with friends!) tonight and we’re both very tired from the travelling we did earlier today.
We are only here 5 nights and so I feel we should be making the most of our time here by going out for dinner, but we are really really tired so I suggested we use the hotel spa and grab a McDonald’s or something light.
But there’s so many beautiful restaurants and views I feel like it’s wasted as we’re only here 5 days.

But DP is literally falling asleep next to me and starting to snore as we speak.
Our friends are going for dinner and we feel silly not going, but even they said we seem shattered and should rest up before the rest of the week.

Anyone else feel guilty for being “boring” on holiday and how do I stop this?

Also we've had a thing in recent years of trying McDs in a different country (once- we do actually eat in other restaurants most of the time) and see what is different on the menu. I have McDs about twice a year at home so McDs is a holiday thing for me- particularly on the first night. Particularly as they are so much better than the UK.

Have tried Italy, France, Belgium and Croatia. DD1 tried in Tenerife.

Belgium is the best. The Wacko Guaco and beer 👌

Going to bed early is one thing but eating McDonalds on holiday is off the scale!!!!

Weirdly McDonald's is actually not bad in some other countries, I quite like a visit just to see the differences. We were surprised in the Netherlands when our mint tea was an actual fresh bunch of mint, plus lovely battered king prawns and a really crisp salad.
About 30yrs ago we were shocked to be served salads in Scandinavian McDs.

But in answer to the OP. We never holiday with friends because we are boring and a holiday to us is as much about chilling and quality sleep, as it is about visiting the sights.

Haha snap!

They are also much cleaner and don't feel as down at heel.

No need to justify holiday McDonaldsing by making it clear you rarely eat McDonalds when at home. Are you scared of the 'from scratch' police?

FrenchandSaunders · 21/09/2023 14:00

How old are you and how long were you travelling for?
Seems a shame to go away with friends and stay in on the first night.
Can't you have a nap and go out later?

Jinx😆

I'm not a McD aficionado or anything, but Mumsnet gets a bit daft with the McD hate. I love the international differences, there's a even a vast difference even between the UK and US offerings.

Lakeyloo · 21/09/2023 14:10

Are you up yet OP ???

I don't really understand the McD hate on here tbh. Fair enough the ethical environmental concerns about cattle rearing for the US side of it.
But they are transparent about their ingredients, allergens, portion size, use mainly paper packaging and their ingredients for the basic items are actually fairly decent. You'd get far worse in some local takeaways.

ASCCM · 21/09/2023 14:15

I like to take it easy on holiday but there is no way I’d be grabbing a bloody MCD’s.

I wouldn’t be suggesting dancing on tables until 4 and but most adults are capable of eating dinner and enjoying the environment for a couple of hours!

Nonplusultra · 21/09/2023 14:16

Slowing down and taking things at an easy pace is just as valid a way of holidaying

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 21/09/2023 14:17

I would have just taken a nap

Mrsmch123 · 21/09/2023 14:18

Nothing wrong with a McDonald's on holiday😬do what suits you. I don't worry about eating "local" food i eat what I enjoy...😀can honestly say in the last 16 years that I have been holidaying as an adult I've never tried "new" foods and im fine with that. You do you!!

Agree with this! Plus have you missed any sleep travelling? And what type of holiday is it?

I’d power on and maybe sleep in a little bit tmw. But that suits my body clock ESPECIALLY when my kids aren’t around.

I'll do a mixture of new and familiar, but yes, a holiday is for doing exactly what suits you.
I can never understand the love for self catering holidays on Mumsnet, cooking is the main thing I want a break from on holiday! But I realise some people like having the time to cook with unusual local ingredients on their holiday.

And yes, some of us need to nap. I'm guilty of that too.

jazzyfips · 21/09/2023 14:28

Mc Donald’s??? Going to bed early is fine.

YANBU, but you're being extremely OTT saying going out for dinner when you're tired is going to ruin your holiday. What do you mean listen to your body?

You're tired, not ill.

I think most of us know people like this. They see themselves as being a bit delicate (when usually they're as hale and hearty as a cart horse).

Oh I'm partial to a McDonalds from time to time! No guilt from me about that.

But I don't think I've ever visited one when abroad. If I had teens and they were enthusiastic do so I'd oblige, but it wouldn't occur to me otherwise.

GotMooMilk · 21/09/2023 14:42

I'm in the take a nap and head out or power through brigade especially if you're away with friends. You can sleep when you're dead!

Youspoilus · 21/09/2023 14:42

How old are you?

what sort of “travelling” was involved?

and macdonalds????!!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 21/09/2023 14:44

If you can't do whatever you feel like on holiday, it's not a proper holiday in my book #teamboring #teamMcDsandbed 😂

Youspoilus · 21/09/2023 14:45

I’ll take a punt op in her twenties

and the “travelling” was a 2.5 easy jet flight

Youspoilus · 21/09/2023 14:48

I have no issue with macdonalds and often treat my children

it was just the idea of going to one of their restaurants on the first night or indeed any night of a short holiday that I suppose is so unappealing to me

therealcookiemonster · 21/09/2023 14:48

it's your holiday do what you want.

it's a holiday, not a competition don't worry yourself what others think

Itsallsostressful · 21/09/2023 14:50
