Anyone else get guilt for being “boring” on holiday?

It’s my DP and I’s first night away on holiday (with friends!) tonight and we’re both very tired from the travelling we did earlier today.
We are only here 5 nights and so I feel we should be making the most of our time here by going out for dinner, but we are really really tired so I suggested we use the hotel spa and grab a McDonald’s or something light.
But there’s so many beautiful restaurants and views I feel like it’s wasted as we’re only here 5 days.

But DP is literally falling asleep next to me and starting to snore as we speak.
Our friends are going for dinner and we feel silly not going, but even they said we seem shattered and should rest up before the rest of the week.

Anyone else feel guilty for being “boring” on holiday and how do I stop this?

There's not much info in the OPs post .... maybe she's 95 and they've travelled to Singapore for 5 nights ....

itsmylife7 · 21/09/2023 15:01

No update from OP. Is she still 😴

jolies1 · 21/09/2023 15:05

Myself and DP have found the first-night trick (even when long haul) is have a quick wash, go straight out, find somewhere for dinner and a drink, then back for an early night. You usually get an energy boost once you’re clean and out in a new place for the first time & then you’ll be full and sleep well ready for a new day. I don’t think delaying bedtime for a couple of hours will have any risk of ruining your holiday!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/09/2023 15:07

I love a lazy holiday! Self catering we always visit the supermarket and stay in first night and just snack . If in a hotel then I would nap then either eat in the hotel restaurant or book a restaurant and get a taxi straight there . I wouldn't choose to holiday with friends as a couple - too much likelihood of people wanting to do different things .

I don't really understand the McD hate on here tbh. Fair enough the ethical environmental concerns about cattle rearing for the US side of it.
But they are transparent about their ingredients, allergens, portion size, use mainly paper packaging and their ingredients for the basic items are actually fairly decent. You'd get far worse in some local takeaways.

It tastes bafflingly disgusting. I don't think I'd been in a McDonalds since my teens until I ended up there with my young DS and his friends on the way back from an under 12's match last year. I thought I would eat something and finally understand the appeal -- I honestly thought it would probably be delicious in a 'don't eat this too often' kind of way, but it was weirdly sweet, soggy and sort of apologetic, without much flavour. I still don't get it.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/09/2023 15:15

@MorvernBlack you're missing the point regarding the self catering holidays. A villa or apartment gives you loads more space to relax. No cooking involved - but the option to put your feet up and snack on bread and cheese if you're feeling lazy , or to sample different restaurants if you fancy going out .

BarbieKew · 21/09/2023 15:15

It all depends what time it is now!! And how far you have travelled today etc etc

Ffion21 · 21/09/2023 15:15

It’s 5 nights. You’ve paid a lot of money to sleep!

Go for dinner and relax during the day…

horseyhorsey17 · 21/09/2023 15:16

You're on holiday so if you want to eat McDonalds in bed then do it! It's your break!

Must admit I am in the McDonalds-hating camp though. It's just dry and tasteless and when you do eat it, you're hungry an hour later, which is WEIRD. But I think it's because it's just salt and sugar and has next to no nutritional value.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 21/09/2023 15:20

If McDonalds is your easy holiday treat - then that is fine. (Not my choice though - I'd put it in with pot-noodle type meals which are also not treats!)

Sleeping and resting after months of work is part of a great holiday (and probably the reason we have them.)

mathanxiety · 21/09/2023 15:28

Surely a holiday is supposed to be a time when you are not obligated to do anything you don't feel like doing, and do whatever you feel like doing?

It's not a frantic box ticking or keeping up with the Joneses exercise.

Eat McDonalds and get a good night's sleep. It is your holiday. You don't owe anyone your company or your fun attitude.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 21/09/2023 15:36

No I don't ever feel guilt for doing what I want, unless I've pulled out last minute (which I would only do in dire straits).

However, I don't really understand why you'd go to Maccies when there must be loads of other restaurants you could go to instead?

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 20/09/2023 16:42

Why would you go away with friends if you just wanted to mooch and sleep?!
You can do that any evening/weekend!!

Have a quick nap and get yourself out and for a meal.

Do you have small children..????
The last mooching and sleeping on a weekend I did was in 2019 😂

The whole point of the holiday is to relax and do things that make you happy/work for you. Have an early meal, even if it's mcDs if that's what you want, then get some sleep. You'll be feeling better tomorrow hopefully

Dibblydoodahdah · 21/09/2023 16:25

We would just get room service if we were too tired to go out for dinner.

Twiglets1 · 21/09/2023 16:39

I wouldn't go to McDonalds on holiday. Fair enough you don't want to go for a long, expensive meal which will be a bit wasted on two tired people, but at least find a nice little place to have a pizza or something.

SoRainbowRhythms · 21/09/2023 16:40

I only holiday with people who understand the importance of a pre dinner nap 😊

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 21/09/2023 16:42

I love a good foreign McDonald’s 😂. Only ever once per holiday but it’s always fun to do. Wouldn’t mind but generally hate UK McDonald’s and only ever eat there is they have the big tasty on.

crimsonlake · 21/09/2023 16:57

Personally I would rest a bit then make the effort to go out and make the most of my holiday.
Have you flown long haul and there is a time difference which would account for your tiredness?
