How clean or dirty is your house right now?

My partner and I are in disagreement. My partner thinks that my standards of cleanliness are exceptionally high, and I think that my partner has exceptionally low standards.

So, how clean or dirty is your house right now? Would you be willing to post a photograph of your kitchen in the state that it is in right now?

I’m fairly confident no one will actually die but I’d hate my mother to turn up right now.

StarDolphins · 19/09/2023 22:06

Mine is clean & tidy BUT only because my DD is in bed.

Tomorrow morning, they’ll be trinkets/key rings & shit chucked all over the place, blue toothpaste spat all over the sink & tiles, 358 dirty greasy marks on the French doors & the dog will be scooting across the room on his arse or slurping on his paws.

Pointless doing it really!

AllotmentTime · 19/09/2023 22:06

Nope, filthy. But we're ill/busy right now so that's my excuse. I'm desperate to be better and give it a bloody good scrub.

The standards of everyone having clean pants on and being fed that day are just about being met 🤣 and tbh I'm patting myself and DH on the back for that. We are doing OK.

potatoes4all · 19/09/2023 22:07

Downstairs is pretty visitor-friendly but the upstairs is an absolute nightmare! DD1 went to uni this weekend and her bedroom is absolutely gross, my mission this weekend is to sort through her leftover belongings, move her room around and set up my home office in there so I can wfh without being in the way when she's not here. I hate cleaning but I love the feeling of settling down at night in a spotless house. It doesn't happen very often 😬

ShadyPaws · 19/09/2023 22:12

Meh. I would let someone in. Just done the washing up

Clean and tidy would not be embarrassed if got surprise visit.

KohlaParasaurus · 19/09/2023 22:31

It's not like a showhouse, but the kitchen and bathrooms are hygienic and the rest of the house was hoovered and tidied a few days ago.

Wowokthanks · 19/09/2023 22:48

Id take a photo of my kitchen, but not my livingroom, or probably bedroom, the bathrooms and hallway, and other rooms are all OK.
I seem to always have atleast one of the babies outfits and toys out in the livingroom, and my bedroom stays tidy for about 10 minutes after it's cleaned (which it was 2 days ago!)

If I left my house to anyone else who lives here, we would probably have cockroaches before they touched it. On the other hand, I'll never be happy until my house is show home standard- it was a couple of years ago.

Plusque · 19/09/2023 22:54

Manky. The cleaner had to cancel last week, and we have builders working outside, but needing intermittent access for the fuse box. I can’t say it particularly bothers me. I never get the ‘visitor-ready” hysteria on here.

Our kitchen is a concrete shell with a temporary cooker and makeshift work surfaces for the next couple of years as we renovate. Cleanliness aside, it would make Mn faint.

Mrsmch123 · 19/09/2023 23:06

My house is clean and tidy. I leave nothing on the worktops each night, brush and mop the floors before going to bed. Living room gets a general tidy and brush/mop. I like to keep my house in a condition that if a stranger turned up I wouldn't be embarrassed to let them in.

kitchenplans · 19/09/2023 23:31

Mine's clean and tidy, as always.

Not bad. Lots of clutter/toys/she's but everywhere cleaned once a week. All washing done but not put away.

But I prefer to have visitors when it's tidy as well as clean.

SoShallINever · 20/09/2023 00:44

Clean and tidy. I hate mess.

fortheloveofjamdoughnuts · 20/09/2023 03:15

Sodullincomparison · 19/09/2023 21:29

Probably a 7/10. Would take ten minutes to sort out downstairs if anyone was popping by.

I clean it and DD5 follows me and undoes any good I do.

Probably annoying in real life, but it sounds darn cute on MN🙂

Currently immaculate - to the point I was running toothpicks down the sides of the hob earlier 😂

It's normally very clean but today it got an extra deep clean so it's ever more sparkly than usual.

Rest of the house is pretty spotless too, but that's my raging OCD and anxiety (glad it's good for something!).

That is a brilliant idea and a tip I am stealing. I currently use a sharp knife but toothpicks are a great idea. It does get grubby right in that crack under the hob edges.

CheekyHobson · 20/09/2023 03:41

Mine is always clean and tidy ('visitor ready'), though not what I would call 'sparkling' (only gets to that point after the twice-a-year deep clean).

As a standard, I vacuum, mop and dust once a week, give the bathrooms and kitchen a really thorough clean once a fortnight (but obviously wipe surfaces down regularly and clean the toilets a couple of times a week) and do a full deep clean where everything gets pulled out and walls and ceilings get wiped down etc twice a year. I actually did clean the oven today, but it's one of those pyrolitic ones where you just press a button and two hours later you wipe up the fine grey ash inside.

I hate clutter, so before the kids go up to bed, they know to do a pick-up of their things and to put them wherever they live. I am on the minimalist side and don't leave things lying around myself; they're either in their 'home' or in use, so our house usually looks pretty tidy. Kids' rooms are the main exception!

I'm a single mum working full time, so if your husband is saying your home needs less cleaning than this, I'd be raising an eyebrow.

Bluelightbaby · 20/09/2023 04:57

My house is always spotless and tidy, but then I have diagnosed OCD

FelicityFlops · 20/09/2023 05:33

Absolutely no idea. I haven't been there since 1st September and am currently about 6k km away on a tropical island.
Probably won't be there again until 6th October.

Mystro202 · 20/09/2023 06:00

Mine is ok now as dh finally pulled the finger out because his family were coming to see the baby. But before that it was a bombsite. And we always have clutter. With a newborn and a toddler as well as two older dcs my time is scarce. I just can't get around to everything so the kitchen and bathroom are all I can manage myself rn 😩

Goldenboysmum · 20/09/2023 06:55

I think mine is pretty grubby at the moment.

But since losing my son 2020, then my partner left me last year, then dad died this year, I just can't seem to find the motivation.

It's tidy(ish) but definitely needs a proper clean.
I keep on top of things like the washing, bed changes etc but I need to have a good clear out of cupboards, drawers etc and a deep clean!

I've got a week off work coming up soon, so I'm hoping to get some done then. Maybe if I can get one room done it'll motivate me to do the rest!

AlltheFs · 20/09/2023 06:58

Kitchen is good apart from the floor which needs doing desperately.

House is tidy but very dusty and full of cobwebs. Overdue for a hoover.

Bathroom is ok, was done a few days ago and loo yesterday. Shower a bit smeary and has a dead spider in it courtesy of the kittens.

We have low standards.

Oh me and DH are the same lol.
mayeb I am OTT because when people visit they always comment on how clean and tidy everything is yet I’m ALWAYS panicking they will come and judge the house for being a mess 😂

northerncrumpet · 20/09/2023 07:09

@Goldenboysmum hugs.

Mine is messy and grubby. I'm a single mum, work full-time and just don't have time and energy to get round to it. But we're washed and fed every day so that'll have to do for now.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 20/09/2023 07:11

Clean enough I don't feel obligated to get off the sofa and do anything but untidy enough that I'm happy to glare at the mess angrily from the sofa and wish it would go away

CrunchyCarrot · 20/09/2023 07:14

A mess, honestly. I am disabled so it is far harder for me to keep up with than if I was fit. However in my defence we are also on the verge of having one room redecorated (dreadful smell of mould coming from somewhere) and another upstairs also being redone bit by bit. Which means a lot of 'stuff' all over the place until it can be rehomed again.

I always say that one day eventually the house will be finished and tidy - then I will probably drop dead the next day before I can enjoy it! 😂
