Russell Brand - everyone knew

1000 replies

Mooshamoo · 18/09/2023 17:06

I was watching the comedian Katherine Ryan say to Louis theroux that a British comedian is a sexual perpetrator. It is now believed that she was talking about Russell brand. She said on the video "when it eventually comes out about these type of people, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, this unmentionable British personality, it turns out that everyone knew. Everyone knew. ".

I was wondering did anyone on here on mumsnet know anything about Russell brand? A lot of us lived in London when her was living there. And many women on here would have been a similar age to Russell brand . I lived in London for a year and I saw Russell brand out on a night out once. That was the extent of it. I was wondering did anyone on here have any experience with him, or know about a friend/acquaintance that had any experiences with him.

I know someone who runs several comedy venues. The industry chatter wasn't about Russell Brand, he is one of many and was never on the circuit.

While investigative journalism is about exposing the truth, from her tweet below, the News Editor of The Sunday Times seems to be very focused on the money. If any case ever gets to court, this would assist with a defence argument that the story is a money-spinning exercise.

Sad to see how many people say they resent the paywall to read our Russell Brand investigation. It took 4 years. It took a team of top journalists, editors, lawyers and many more. Investigations are not cheap. But they are v important - and we should all support them.

That is such a reach and/or niave. It wouldn't help at all in court. You think journalists don't have bills? What would happen pre-internet if everybody just demanded The Times gave their paper out for free?

Get a grip.

Stokey · 18/09/2023 20:43

Sorry if this has been mentioned as I haven't RTFT but there is an interesting interview with the Times journalist on The News Agents podcast today.

She says various stand-up comedians were mentioning it in their shows which is why she started investigating. She talks a lot about the standard of evidence and why the investigation took so long, including the fact they had statements from other women which didn't make the bar. She also says it wasn't her place to go to the police, that is up to the victims who may not feel comfortable doing so.

Viviennemary · 18/09/2023 20:43

His creepy sleaziness was made into a virtue by his agents and also the media. It's disgusting. They are all to blame IMHO.

CathyorClaire · 18/09/2023 20:43

It might also be worth discussing why some women were attracted to him. It’s no good pretending they weren’t. They were

This is true.

I was on a now deceased parenting forum way back when and a prolific poster was constantly raving about him even though to most he was an obvious sleaze ball.

I can recall some very minimising interesting discussions about what constituted humour around the Andrew Sachs cruelty too.

So many gave him (and Jonathan Ross) an inexplicable pass.

HamBone · 18/09/2023 20:45

@teddyandgypsy I completely forgot that Katy Perry married him. I mean, she was v. famous then and could have anyone…but somehow he did. It’s quite bizarre.

TempName247 · 18/09/2023 20:46

There’s a lot of back and forth on here about the ‘child’ and age of consent being 16, I think everyone is actually in agreement that the law is contradictory and the age of consent should be 18.

teddyandgypsy · 18/09/2023 20:46

I remain utterly amazed that Jemima Khan let him touch her with a barge pole. Quite apart from anything else, there is the disease factor

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/09/2023 20:47

There are many non-celeb men who behave just like he did, trading on their good looks and/or money. It's a sorry state of affairs.

But from the early days of his fame his sleazy reputation went before him. At least because he was famous his conquests had a bit of a heads-up on what he was like.

Meanwhile, thousands of men carry on carrying on duping, coercing and lying to women to get them to have sex with them even if it's not technically rape. So very yuk.

Zonder · 18/09/2023 20:47

Wherly · 18/09/2023 20:25

The internet has been saying it for years. In my experience online persistent, consistant rumours tend to be true.

There are 3 other British ones who still haven't had a reckoning but you persistently see named online, I suppose time will tell.

3 other British what? Wondering who now.

teddyandgypsy · 18/09/2023 20:49

Meanwhile, that Welsh saint Huw Edwards continues to hide under the duvet in the Priory while the BBC have him on full salary. As we pay that salary, I would like to know just how long this is going to go on.

Orangebadger · 18/09/2023 20:50

Well the product he sold was promiscuity and sex so everyone knew he had a sex addiction but these allegations pertain to rape, grooming as well as sexual assault. I have never liked him, I have always found him uncomfortable to watch as he goes too far over the line of what is acceptable in comedy IMO.

I watched the dispatches doc today and what struck me was things like having written into his contact with Big brother that he was not to have any sexual conduct/ relations with any of the staff. Then it's also revealed that another show was looking for a presenter and his name was top of the list, but they were cautious due to his behaviour with women in the past, so one suggestion was to only have men working around him!!! WTF! Luckily this didn't happen and he was not used. This is what disturbs me the most is how these powerful people just carry on been accommodated to and a platform given to them to carry on with what everyone in the industry clearly knew they were doing. What chance would any woman have up against that? None whatsoever! Makes my blood boil that nothing has been learnt from Saville, Winstein, Crosby etc.

This.

It makes me very uncomfortable that we can now just decide to jump on the bandwagon of “Look at me I have special knowledge”. It’s ghoulish.

I work in the media, I knew about Weinstein, Saville and Harris before stories broke. Never heard a peep about RB until this week. I also have a friend who very proudly shagged him, just once, and said he was great etc but he didn’t call as promised (she didn’t expect him to, given he was literally Shagger of the Year she’d have been foolish to as well).

So you work in the media, you knew about Weinstein, Saville and Harris before the stories broke (not from personal experience but you knew) and you said nothing.
Because you also knew of the obvious litigious minefield. The legal mess it would get you into to make such allegations.
And yet you are wondering why those who are now saying they've known for ages didnt speak up sooner - maybe its that same litigious minefield? that prevented you from speaking up about what you apparently knew.
Hypocritical much.

Moonlightdust · 18/09/2023 20:50

Didn’t this already tell people in 2013 what sort of depraved person he was?

“Brand, who is famous for his acerbic, highly sexualised and outrageously crude comedy, was speaking to Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast in 2013 where he claimed he was a 'mundane bloke... from a single-parent family' who became a 'pretty comprehensive show-off'.
But Herring and the audience roared with laughter when the star broke the silence and said: 'Oh I’ve raped someone once’ and 'killed her after’.

In the same video he also joked about the ancient Greeks having sex with children while creating mathematics, saying: 'They didn't mind it did they. They were clever weren't they.'
He then mimicked having sex and said: 'I've done another triangle. I'm f*ing a little kid. This is great. F**k the kid with the triangle. No that's too much.' He also joked about adults such as babysitters performing sex acts in front of children, including him.”

Some people find power, self importance, using pompous expressions and words ego, charisma etc attractive
(I'm amazed at the amount of women Boris Johnson has attracted)

I find neither of them remotely appealing!

It’s funny how ‘everyone’ says they knew when allegations are aired. Yet they were silent before…

But they weren’t silent before. Katherine Ryan talked about it, and she did tell him to his face while they were recording a show (her accusation was left in the cutting room floor) - he corroborated this.

why did a production team try to remove females from crew if they didn’t know?

3 other British what? Wondering who now.

I don't want to say (I have heard at least 2 are very litigious and I am para) but 2 of them were frequently named all over the internet before this documentary was confirmed as being about Brand. Not Noel Feilding, I have never heard anything about him at all and think all that speculation came from a blind item about the subject of Dispatches (when it was still unknown) that appeared totally made up.

I was struck by the amazing amount of work done by the Times and Despatches. It must have taken years of digging and the way they just slogged away at it. We are all in their debt. A fabulous piece of journalism. I would also say they seem pretty sure of their ground as RB is famously litigious

Jonathan Ross’s behaviour during that prank was so rank - possibly even worse than RB’s. When I listened to it again I was shocked by the way he keeps punching Brand to behave so despicably.

@MartinChuzzlewit

I don't even know if a case was even opened back then in 2020. Is it ongoing? But it says: Alice "she received a letter from Brand’s lawyer". Back in 2020. So he did have a lawyer.

There wasn’t a police case in 2020.

Alice emailed RB’s PR agency in 2020 telling them what he did to her. The agency’s lawyer sent a very aggressive response to Alice accusing her of money hunting and threatening her with legal action. She didn’t have a lawyer.

Wrong from the CPS website - https://www.cps.gov.uk/crime-info/sexual-offences

A child is defined as any person under the age of 18. Child sexual abuse involves forcing or inciting a child to take part in sexual activity, whether or not the child is aware of what is happening and not necessarily involving a high level of violence.
This may involve physical contact including rape or oral sex, or non-penetrative acts such as masturbation, kissing, rubbing and touching outside of clothing. They may also include non-contact activities, such as involving children in looking at, or in the production of, sexual images, watching sexual activities, encouraging children to behave in sexually inappropriate ways, or exploiting or grooming a child in preparation for abuse (including via the internet) or prostitution. Child sexual abuse can be committed by both men and women, or other children.

The grooming element as well - in this case approaching a child on the street, going through her bags, telling her what to wear, encouraging her to lie to parents etc

@Fizbosshoes That’s an excellent comparison, two men who can talk incessantly using long words and a grandiose sense of self-importance.
They both somehow attract women.

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2023 20:56

@Fizbosshoes I’m with you there. I still find it odd though. It’s as if huge areas of their personality are simply glossed over. I couldn’t be that trusting.
