A side of a passport or a birth certificate is there any other way of proving eligibility to work in the UK?

The person will need to order a new birth certificate, it's about £13 I think or you can fast track for around £35.
It's a passport or birth certificate + official document showing NI number for British citizens.

I do these checks for new employees at my work place and these are the documents accepted.

Birth certificate is not UK and NI number does not prove you are British.

Even if the BC is UK it still doesn't prove you are British.

Because mine does!

You can register a baby as being British if they are…

Can you register them 23 years later?

Yes, she’s British by descendant. I’m British. She’s my daughter, but she wasn’t born in the UK, and she doesn’t physically have a British passport. It’s been with the passport office for 18 weeks now. And of course she can’t work.

My family is british but my sister was born overseas. She has a birth certificate from the country she was born in and a supplementary certificate (can't remember exactly what it's called) which confirms that her birth was registered at thr British Embassy of that country at the time of her birth and corfirms that she was born to British parents.

Looks like you can apply for a letter confirming British nationality for the purposes of employment etc from this page:

Could get a UK Citizen Card? Their online blur say recognised by police and authorities as valid ID - it was mentioned to me a few years ago when I was claiming JSA and didn't have a passport or photo driving licence.

Are you talking about a British birth certificate showing the child was born overseas or a foreign birth certificate issued by the country in which the child was born?

My children have French birth certificates. They are British citizens but there is no reference to that on their French birth certificates.

PaminaMozart · 18/09/2023 08:21

A foreign birth certificate doesn't say that someone is British. It used to be possible to get a British birth certificate for children who are British by descent, but it doesn't seem like the OP obtained this.

If daughter has a copy of her expired British passport and a receipt for the renewal application, maybe employers might accept this as any interim measure?

Fuckingfuming1 · 18/09/2023 08:21

She’s had a British passport before, they are insisting on the other passport being updated before they will issue a new passport. She can’t get an appointment with the embassy until October, and she can’t work in the meantime.

She is receiving universal credits, and they have no issue with her being British, but obviously she just can’t prove it to employers.

If foreign surely it’s only the passport that counts, you need it to get settled status. It’s such a pain.

ThinWomansBrain · 18/09/2023 08:22

Does she have a scan of the old passport?
She should provide that to the employer with an explanation that the old one is at the passport office.
For several years I didn't have a passport and used an expired one for employment, etc

If not, she should chase the passport office - or at 18 weeks, chase them anyway.
Make a scanned copy or take a photo when it arrives - always useful in case it gets lost in the future.

I did wonder about that. We seem to be going round and round in circles with no definitive answer as to whether the expired passport would work.

No, I’m talking about the foreign birth certificate. The long version should state that the child is British if registered with the British Embassy at the time.

Hers doesnt state anything about being British on it. She was born in the country to the country’s parents, he was a citizen I had permanent residency. They had no need to comment on where I was originally from.

Maybe it does that in the country where your children were born but that's not standard.

In France the birth has to be registered within three days and they could not care less whether the child is also a citizen of another country or not.

My children have never been registered with the British Embassy either, because I didn't see the point. I just applied for British passports for them straight away.

Yeah, we’ve had letters from them asking for further information, which she is booked in to obtain but not until mid October.

How old is the expired passport and does the photo in it look like her? An expired passport can often be used.

She wasn't born in the UK. I've never seen a birth certificate here with someone's nationality by descent on it.

She’s explained it’s because her other passport needs updating first and they can’t get an appointment until October.

MNetcurtains · 18/09/2023 08:26

herewegoagainfriends · 18/09/2023 08:16

Right, so this is a first passport application so she doesn’t have an expired one she can use?

Birth certificate then. It doesn’t matter if the country of birth is overseas if it says she’s British on it.

Expired passports have to be sent to the passport office with the application for renewal.

Fuckingfuming1 · 18/09/2023 08:26

Yeah I would say it looks like her it’s only five years and she hasn’t changed much since she was 18. I do have a photo of it.

Xiaoxiong · 18/09/2023 08:26

She must have a copy of her British passport somewhere? And if she doesn't, that's a lesson to her to take photos/scans of all important documents in case they get lost as it's much easier to get replacements, especially when abroad.

If she has a copy, she can try using that plus the evidence of her submitting it for renewal (email confirmation from the Passport Office) and see if she gets anywhere with that. I would be chasing that renewal though - 18 weeks is a very long time, I renewed ours a few months ago and none of them took longer than a week except mine because I didn't realise I needed to provide the original of my other nationality's passport as well. Once I posted that off I got both passports back a week later.

Actually that's a thought - does she have a second nationality of the country of her birth? Has she posted that to the Passport Office as well, maybe they are waiting for that?
