A side of a passport or a birth certificate is there any other way of proving eligibility to work in the UK?

I’m obviously just posting here for traffic

A visa. - any of the various types that show the holder is allowed to work.

Fuckingfuming1 · 18/09/2023 08:10

She’s British by descent, so she does actually have a British passport. It’s just with the British passport office being renewed. So she can’t get a Visa. Because she doesn’t need one.

How did you think foreign nationals who live and work in the UK prove they are eligible to work? I feel like that should be common knowledge?

fairyfluf · 18/09/2023 08:11

Is the person a British or Irish citizen?

TeaKitten · 18/09/2023 08:11

There is a clear list on the gov website what what you can use, Google is probably quicker than waiting for potentially inaccurate answers on here.

Yes, she’s British by descendant. I’m British. She’s my daughter, but she wasn’t born in the UK, and she doesn’t physically have a British passport. It’s been with the passport office for 18 weeks now. And of course she can’t work.

Depends where you are from.
BC in combination with other things (because BC itself doesn't prove nationality)
Visa
EUSS code
And so on. Pretty sure gov website has list

Ah sorry no advice then. Try the government website.

BingoandBlueyForever · 18/09/2023 08:12

So she needs to show her passport. She may have to wait until her new passport arrives. If it’s for a job application and she has a scanned copy of her old passport, I’d show that and perhaps some proof that she’s waiting on her new passport.

18 weeks seems like a long time for a renewal? Have you been able to check on the progress of her application? I would be worried it had got lost.

Lunchmenuplease · 18/09/2023 08:14

The person will need to order a new birth certificate, it's about £13 I think or you can fast track for around £35.
It's a passport or birth certificate + official document showing NI number for British citizens.

I do these checks for new employees at my work place and these are the documents accepted.

maddening · 18/09/2023 08:14

NI card and drivers.liscense to prove you are the owner of the NI card?

Why can’t she use the birth certificate? It only takes a few weeks for one to arrive if that’s the problem.

MargotBamborough · 18/09/2023 08:15

How annoying, OP.

Was it an online application? Have you got any tracking information? Have you called the Passport Office?

18 weeks is way longer than it should take so you need to be rattling their cages now.

Because she wasn't born in the UK.

NI card by itself or with DL isn't really proof of eligibility. I had both and yet might not be eligible to work in UK if I didn't do EUSS. Immigrants can have both of these but expired visa etc.

herewegoagainfriends · 18/09/2023 08:16

Right, so this is a first passport application so she doesn’t have an expired one she can use?

Birth certificate then. It doesn’t matter if the country of birth is overseas if it says she’s British on it.

SD1978 · 18/09/2023 08:17

How old is she?

Why would it say she is British on it? People registering children born in other countries have no idea whether the child is British or not.

This link has the list of acceptable documents:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/right-to-work-checklist/employers-right-to-work-checklist-accessible-version

The employer can also use the Employer Checking Service as a temporary solution, while waiting for the original documents to be available: www.gov.uk/employee-immigration-employment-status

Because mine does!

You can register a baby as being British if they are…
