AIBU to think... 'here we go again?'

Anyone watching? I've always said 'innocent until proven guilty' but also 'there is no smoke without fire'.

Having been sexually assaulted myself, one of the stories seem so similar to mine.

What's your thoughts?

This is the most confusing post, I know. I just don't know how I feel.

I don't understand why the programme was shown, surely that will undermine any police investigation and subsequent trial. I'm surprised the producers didn't have a duty of care to direct these woman to the police before making the documentary.

Agree

trythisforsize · 17/09/2023 00:04

Hmmmm, I don't think women trust the police much anymore

Can't think why

He has not been charged. Journalists can't report once he is charged but can until he us.

I read that all these women and other witnesses signed sworn affidavits, so what is in the show would be evidence in a court case.

It was all carefully done without sensalisation.

It would not prejudice a case

It seems that journaliasts are indeed able to do a more thorough investigation than the police would ever have the resources for. Looks like RB could be going to court after all then.

I hope so

Um I’ve just googled a question about Rita ora. Absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with brand, but look what came up on the page and look especially at the date!!!

JuliusWho · 16/09/2023 22:52

Had anyone come up with a good explanation for why a non-rapist would send a text message, apologizing for raping someone, yet?

Or are we still just sticking with vague nonsense about the establishment being out to get RB?

I think he's guilty as sin........

but if I was his defence lawyer I would say he was apologising for not using a condom, not for raping her.
And that it was clearly consensual sex in the end as the woman said she prides herself on making the right decisions but that that was clearly a bad one, that Russell came on strong and scared her and she said no but that she then consented which is why she said she made a bad decision.

As I said, I think he did it but I wouldn't consider the text to be indisputable.

That’s because the London Standard website has a live news ticker on top of its webpages (including older articles), and the Russell Brand story is currently the first one on the ticker.

Blueink · 17/09/2023 01:21

I think the point here was to establish a pattern of predatory behaviour, exploitation of being in privileged position and power imbalance based on age and other factors.

The audience members were very young women (teenagers up to age 21).

This type of behaviour needs to be challenged.

Sorry, the Evening Standard

Anyone remember what thread the Katy Perry quote was posted on?

MidnightMeltdown · 17/09/2023 01:54

Bogbrushhair · 16/09/2023 22:24

Absolutely no surprise he’s officially an odious predatory creep, he made no secret of it. The bigger story is how and why he kept getting so many high profile gigs when it was so obvious how relentlessly vile his treatment of women was.

This 100%

Oh ok @JuliusWho i just thought it meant 17th August 2023!

It does. That’s when the Rita Ora article was published, but it still has a constantly-updating breaking news ticker at the top of the article, and that’s where the Russel Brand text has been pulled from.

Just click the link and you’ll see it- red ticker at the top of the page.

I've never liked him and never watched him on telly. Always thought he was about as funny as explosive diarrhoea.
However, I do believe that anyone accused of any crime is entitled to a fair trial in front of the jury and not tried by the court of the media.
I don't disbelieve the women who made the allegations but I think that the evidence should have been sent to the police rather than broadcast on TV

What's wrong with both? It needs to be broadcast so that others can come forward. Cannot see any reason at all not to broadcast very credible allegations.

swimsong · 17/09/2023 02:10

Tigertigertigertiger · 16/09/2023 22:52

If he has broken the law it's a police matter , not a trial by media circus

It's not a trial and it's not a circus.
It's responsible investigative journalism.
He has the right to sue for libel.

verdantverdure · 17/09/2023 02:25

I bet Brand doesn't sue for libel.

He knows that risks all the other women coming forward, and he knows there are a lot of them.

Sheer numbers is what took down Bill Cosby.

"It's only her word against his" sounds even more pathetic when there are dozens of them.

MetaverseMavis · 17/09/2023 02:32

To me the most astounding information was 16 yr old Alice telling her mum she met 30yr old RB and her mother allowing the date to happen and on another occasion driving her to RBs home and allowing her 16yr old to stay over with him. What shockingly poor judgement by the mother. Who enabled RB with her lack of boundaries for her daughter

I tend to place the responsibility for rape on the rapists myself.

WellPlaced · 17/09/2023 03:01

Sex between a 30 & 16 year old is not illegal and if it was consensual, it’s not rape.

I agree it was very poor judgement by her Mother either way.’

ChillysWaterBottle · 17/09/2023 03:02

He is disgusting and so are all the people defending him.

Rape apologists are beneath contempt. They are complicit in the culture that allows this behaviour to thrive and go unpunished. Some of you should be ashamed.

Men like him have been getting away with it for years. I'm glad the victims finally got the chance to speak out. I only wish healing and justice for them, although the latter is unlikely in this society. I hope they're being well looked after and supported.

Anotherrname · 17/09/2023 03:26

I think the American woman's allegation of rape is very serious and hopefully the police are investigating this and the woman had/has support. However, I don't like how the main bulk of the TV programme was 'look how many one night stands Brand had. How sleazy.' It's already well known that he used to have sex with loads of women. Asking TV runners to hand out your phone number to adult audience members is hardly the same as Saville abusing underage children. A 16+ teen with an adult is an uncomfortable age gap, but not unheard of eg Diana was 16 when she started hanging out with King Charles who was in his 30s and Aaron Johnson was 17 when he was groomed by Samantha Taylor, a woman in her 40s.

Both those examples are problematic so I don't get what you mean by uncomfortable age gap but not unheard of.
We know it's not unheard of for adults to groom teenagers, or at the very least for them to take advantage due to the age gap.

DebbieLouiseDairyleaCheese · 17/09/2023 03:39

I've had to pause it twice, watching the end now. Why are the BBC saying they can't comment? Sorry if it's been mentioned already, but why would they bother protecting him?

fungibletoken · 17/09/2023 03:42

I doubt it's about protecting him - more about protecting themselves in anticipation of litigation.
