So I need to rejoin the gym . Popped in today to ask about pricing and they want £25 to set up the direct debit with my bank . Are they having a bit of a laugh ?

Is that not the joining fee for the gym rather than for setting up the direct debit?

Lovelycupofcoffee · 16/09/2023 18:54

No they charge 25 pound to set up the direct debit then £37 each month is the membership fee. I could set up the direct debit free of charge . Just seems a bit odd

I think you have misunderstood

dementedpixie · 16/09/2023 18:56

A joining fee is different to the monthly payment. I imagine its a one off joining fee of £25 and then the monthly payment for the membership

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 16/09/2023 18:56

It sounds like they're charging you to re-join on top of the monthly membership fee.

I've never heard of anywhere charging you to set up a direct debit.

Lovelycupofcoffee · 16/09/2023 18:58

They asked me for £25 direct debit set up and admin fee . Then membership until the 2nd of October .

That's just the joining fee, which is pretty standard for gyms.

The monthly membership is separate.

strawberryjeans · 16/09/2023 19:03

It’s a joke! They wouldn’t get my custom.

LittleOwl153 · 16/09/2023 19:03

If that includes membershp till the end of october... then surely at least a good chunk of it is that 16 days membership...?

TeenagersAngst · 16/09/2023 19:04

Our gym is £50 joining fee followed by monthly membership so count yourself lucky!

NotSorry · 16/09/2023 19:05

Our club no longer charges joining fee - not sure why a joining fee is necessary anyway

Sugarfree23 · 16/09/2023 19:05

Are you sure it's not £25 to cover the first month before the D/D starts?

Lovelycupofcoffee · 16/09/2023 19:06

@LittleOwl153 next payment would be the 4th of October . They wanted 48.75 today

Standard joining fee annoyingly

Lovelycupofcoffee · 16/09/2023 19:07

@Sugarfree23 i did query it and they confirmed the £25 I’d to set up the direct debit / admin fee

Is it an independent gym?
It will be a joining fee

MarathonBarbie · 16/09/2023 19:09

DD set up/admin fee - so essentially the joining fee

dementedpixie · 16/09/2023 19:09

Them calling it an admin fee means its a joining fee tbh

Lovelycupofcoffee · 16/09/2023 19:09

@NotSorry especially when they are in the local paper saying that numbers at the gym are dropping .

OP posts:
Lovelycupofcoffee · 16/09/2023 19:10

@dementedpixie its the local council run gym .

OP posts:
SchoolAdminNeverGoodEnough · 16/09/2023 19:29

You know they have to employ people to set up DD/admin/re admit you on the database? And they also want to avoid having people cancel for 3 months over the summer (because they use the outdoor pool/run outside..../whatever) and then rejoining for 2 months and then cancel and then rejoin.

So the admin fees is to pay for people to administer your membership - and as a way to avoid people faffing around cancelling/joining.

Why can you not understand this?

Lovelycupofcoffee · 17/09/2023 13:06

@SchoolAdminNeverGoodEnough you sound a bit angry not sure why ? . I just thought that if they removed this charge more people may join ?

It's the same thing as a joining fee - just under a different name.

BashfulClam · 17/09/2023 14:05

Gyms love to charge. When I moved in with my husband I wanted to change gyms, same company just different location. The girl
said there was £50 fee to move club (actual stf?) Do I said ‘cool just cancel my membership then?’ She smugly advised I need to have been member for a year otherwise I’d need to pay to cancel. The smug look dropped when I said ‘I’ve been a member for 3 years, cancel my membership please!’ Strangely I was moved over free of charge.

i tried to join another gym and the sakes person gave me the price and joining fee. I just said ‘ah I’ll go home and join online as it was cheaper!’ She checked online and undercut the price

So threaten to walk away.

KrisAkabusi · 17/09/2023 14:09

You said it yourself. It's not a direct debit fee, it's a direct debit AND ADMIN fee.
