Unnecessary air conditioning

SunshineHello · 16/09/2023 10:42

Why is it suddenly a ‘thing’ for anywhere with air con to chill indoors to about 12 degrees, as soon as it’s mildly warm outdoors?

Shop staff all with jumpers on while it’s 25 degrees outside. Office workers spending their summers shivering at their desks under a jet of ice cold air.

Why?

Wtf men are more comfortable colder! Since when?

Since science. Look it up.

RampantIvy · 17/09/2023 10:31

Er..I would have liked some air conditioning in the office over the past few weeks. It’s been quite hot hasn’t it?

The week before last was, otherwise, no it wasn't.

Loads of articles here about men preferring to work in cooler environments

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=men+prefer+colder+offices+to+women

It seems like the main demographic of women on here are peri menopausal or menopausal, but most female office workers aren't (and some of us are post menopausal and feel the cold)

@RampantIvy in a different office it would keep a fleece so I had something to wrap up in. And I've gone outside for a heat.

Oh yes it was. Where I live anyway.

RampantIvy · 17/09/2023 12:19

I need to move to your area then @Defiantjazz. We had two weeks of nice weather in June, a warmish and dry (not hot) week in August and a lovely week at the beginning of September. Other than that we have had a dreadful summer with the wettest July for 50 years.

MintJulia Bollocks You just wanted a dig at fat people Ive been a size 28 and a size 12 and i hated the heat just as much at both sizes.

There are also a lot of people here who arent stuck in a shitty small sauna of a flat in the middle of a block on the top floor

I've noticed that those members of our staff who are overweight always want the aircon turned up, while those with 'less padding' don't. Completely reasonable if you recognise that fat is nature's insulation.

As the UK population gets fatter, the demand for aircon will go up, as has happened in the US.

I’m overweight and I’m always freezing. I have bad circulation so I don’t think it’s that hard and fast. We worked with a woman who was always boiling, she wore best tops and flip flops, in winter, in Scotland! She was always turning the air on to arctic and also opening windows (no matter how many times we explained you need to close the windows to get optimum air con results.

Opening the windows meant the draught just hit me and my colleague and we were frozen whilst she was complaining about the ‘terrible heat’ the temperature gauge said it was 15c in the office. I offered to swap seats as i was in the line of the windows but she refused.

Oh please do tell where I look up such things?

In the book Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez.

I'm menopausal and still feel the cold. That is the beauty of working from home some of the time. I am never cold at home.
