Hate when people have negative opinions on your baby names

Does anyone else just think people are so entitled and rude when they tell you they dislike your chosen baby name ? It really annoys me and I feel there's no need. I feel like that's an opinion you keep to yourself unless obviously say the names something like chlamydia. We've struggled to choose a name for our daughter so badly and then finally we found one we adore and everyone is just so against it and it's really annoying me ,it's so rude. It happened with my other two aswell ,named my son after my late grandad and SIL straight up said and this is a direct quote "ew I really don't like that " and now this baby people are doing the same saying they hate it and I just feel like you've a right to not like the babies name but that's an opinion you should keep to yourself ,just abit of a rant because I've only told my mum and dh mum and they've both said they hate the name and not even in a nice way ,I just think it's so rude. The name I've picked is Nova and they're both saying that's not a name and I should strongly reconsider My other daughter is called Luna so I fell in love with it (moon and stars) think it's lovely and now I'm so annoyed that they hate it and MIL is actually calling the baby another name hoping I'll change my mind ugh rant over

@StandingMyGround888 I'm 37 and of course I've heard of Vauxhall Nova's

GetUpStandUp4 · 16/09/2023 04:30

missing the point of the thread but Luna and Seren sounds much nicer together

Mystro202 · 16/09/2023 04:34

Ugh people are so opinionated when it comes to names. They completely overlook the fact that the parent(s) obviously love the name or it means something to them. Whether I like a name or not I'm always polite. I would never respond negatively to a name. It's ridiculous, what makes them think they are so high and mighty.

CurlewKate · 16/09/2023 06:38

@StandingMyGround888 "Sorry but only older people know of Vauxhall Nova. No person under 40 has ever heard of it. So her friends won't and teachers won't. Ive met two children called Nova perfectly fine name."

Out of interest, and not really relevant, how old do you think teachers are? 🤣🤣

BethDuttonsTwin · 16/09/2023 06:41

Agree OP. No response other than “oh that’s nice/lovely/pretty/cool is required when someone tells you their baby name. I thought that was a given but see by the voting that it’s almost an even split. There sure are a lot of abrasive, entitled, ill mannered people about, or maybe they’re just here on MN 😁

LateAF · 16/09/2023 06:55

Love the name Seren - beautiful and not overused Welsh mama. Agree with previous posters that it goes better with Luna than Nova does.

LateAF · 16/09/2023 06:55

*Welsh name not mama

LateAF · 16/09/2023 06:58

I agree - genuinely never heard of a Vauxhall nova. First time heard of it is this thread. By the time OPs kid is an adult it won’t be what people think of at all.

TropicalTrama · 16/09/2023 07:39

34 here and haven’t heard of a Vauxhall Nova. Corsas were popular in the 6th form car park though. It doesn’t mean Star though so OP might want to rethink if that’s what she’s trying to go for.

LlynTegid · 16/09/2023 07:43

I dislike use of unconventional spelling of a name. A child having to spend a lifetime telling people or correcting them as to how their name is spelt is not a loving thing to give.

Oysterbabe · 16/09/2023 07:47

You decide and announce once the baby is born otherwise you are just inviting opinions.
Nova sounds ridiculous with Luna. I like the suggestion of Stella though.

khaa2091 · 16/09/2023 07:54

Don't compromise. My daughter is conventional first name, unusual Cornish second name. 2 years later the only person who refers to her by the first name is the GP receptionist. The poor child is going to arrive at school without knowing their name.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 16/09/2023 07:57

I've never told anyone the names we liked before the baby was actually born and given the name. I always just say we don't know, make a joke about in-house name arguments with DP then move the subject on.

ZooMount · 16/09/2023 07:59

I wouldn't worry about what teachers think. Kids are allowed to self identify these days and are renaming themselves all sort of ridiculous names!

I think it is because people think they can 'save' the child from a name they don't like if the baby hasn't arrived yet. You very rarely get negetive comments after the baby is born.

rubydoobydoo · 16/09/2023 08:08

A few years ago I would have thought of the car, yes - but now I know a Nova who is lovely and it just makes me think of her.

If you name your daughter Nova her peers wouldn't have a clue about the car (and they weren't that shitty, my mum had a few Novas and loved them!)

Marynotsocontrary · 16/09/2023 10:06

Go with Nova if you love it.
Just in case you're reconsidering, other names meaning star include
Seren
Stella
Estelle or Estella
Tara (depending on the language it has other meanings too)

I agree that you don’t tell people the baby’s name til after they’re born. Obviously people shouldn’t comment, but they will if it’s beige the birth as they see it as a conversation, or a request for opinions, rather than an announcement.

Tell them when it’s a done deal.

Of the names that do mean star, Seren is so beautiful. I love that name. Stella (or Stela) is nice too though.

People over 40 are “older people” 😱

I am 44 and my best friend from school had a Vauxhall Nova. We went to loads of cool places in that car.

I love that you’ve included Star in that list. Star means star. Grin

Katiesaidthat · 20/09/2023 12:35

The names of your daughter´s are very "sky gazing". Are you both into astronomy? I have to admit I have never heard of Nova as a personal name (it is a TV channel in Spain), but I would never say it is awful or anything, people can be quite scathing sometimes.

Lauryn95 · 21/09/2023 19:07

I do like Stella however working in pubs my whole life I'm sick of hearing the word Stella ,it just reminds me of beer and work 😅 I know nova means new I do feel silly now but it is used in astronomy to mean new star so that's close enough lmao

I think if pretty much everyone you tell says it's awful, its probably because it is. They are trying to stop you from making a mistake that a child then adult has to live with for the rest of their life. Lots of first impressions are formed from seeing a name. A CV for instance.

Luna and Nova are nice names, for cats. Not my personal taste, but Luna is ok on its own. Themed names are a bit tacky, similar to having multiple kids all with the same initial.

Perhaps think of a few non astrology/car related names you like and see if they go well with Luna.
