Fish fingers, waffles, and bog roll

Lorelielee · 15/09/2023 15:45

£3.65 in Iceland for a box of SIX fish fingers!!!!

£2.50 for a box of TEN potato waffles!!!

£4.50 for one of those packs of 9 bog rolls, with the handle that looks like a briefcase!!!!

I feel like I’ve treated myself to the luxury of being able to wipe my arse before I meekly devide up the fish finger and waffles feast between me and the kids like Mrs Cratchett.

Fishfingers and waffles are Tuesday night jobber tea not a Friday night treat.

Am I being unreasonable to ask Iceland for the breakdown of how they arrived at these crazy prices because I think they are just making them up randomly now because they comically expensive.

Would argue fish fingers and waffles is more of a treat meal.

What if you compared prices to fish and potatoes?

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 15/09/2023 15:49

Jesus that's outrageous!

HollaWithDaRisinSound · 15/09/2023 15:53

Tag them on Social M and ask them - i double dare ya

Needmorelego · 15/09/2023 15:55

I bought a box of 6 Birds Eye fishfingers from Iceland yesterday for £2 (they were possibly in the 3 for £5 offer so would have been more if just bought on their own).
Own brand Waffles are £1 I think.
Loo roll is available cheaper too.

Needmorelego · 15/09/2023 16:00

@Lorelielee I stand corrected - the waffles are £1.75.
However s 9 pack of loo roll is £3.75 and the fish fingers were just £2 and not part of the deal.

I did my sainsburys shop earlier and 4 frozen portions of "white fish" was £6.50. I didn't buy it but the price stood out to me as I was walking along the aisle.

The only apples they had were 6 for £2.30 😮

Lorelielee · 15/09/2023 16:10

6 Birdseye chunky fish fingers. Not even cod!! and they aren’t even that chunky: £3.50.

Actually their pricing system for fish fingers is all over the place. Very erratic pricing.

i feel like I want to do some kind of research into it. Like track prices over the last 20 years to find some kind of trend. Maybe comparing to the prices of potatoes and fish.

I went to the fishmonger today and bought two (admittedly large) fillets of smoked haddock.

£10.

Will be serving with broccoli that I had in the fridge which I think cost about £2, so £6 per head for a very simple, protein and veg-based dinner for two adults.

Fortunately I can afford it and I believe in supporting local fishing fleets, farmers etc, but that's an insane amount of money - and we wonder why there's an obesity epidemic / so much of the population is suffering chronic malnutrition due to food poverty?

PinkRoses1245 · 15/09/2023 16:15

Baffles me why anyone buys brands, get some own brand fish fingers and buy a big bag of potatoes instead.

Curiosity101 · 15/09/2023 16:16

Look at prices by weight, not by quantity. Looking at Iceland online the fish fingers vary from £3.21 per kg to £13.04 per kg.

I agree that those prices are quite high, but it wasn't a necessity for you to pay that much.

MrsHsGirl · 15/09/2023 16:28

Definitely switch to own brand. I've just started shopping at aldi and I am ASTOUNDED by the price difference between their stuff and the branded stuff.

£4.50 for 36 weetabix or £1.50 for 36 wheat bisks. Exactly the same ingredients/weight/nutritional value but THREE WHOLE POUNDS difference - madness!

Lorelielee · 15/09/2023 16:33

@AffIt Well, yes I see where you are coming from. Purely money wise It would have been cheaper to buy happy meals from McDonald’s. In fact better value for money because they include a drink.

@HollaWithDaRisinSound I think I will later. 😂

I just pulled into a garage as fancied a Diet Coke. £2.09 for one of those small bottles. Walked straight out again - fuck that

Lorelielee · 15/09/2023 16:46

@PinkRoses1245 I agree I don’t have thing about brands. But I’ve tried Iceland’s own brand fishfingers before and they are really bad quality.

In what world is fish fingers and waffles a treat meal? Confused

Spottytoddler · 15/09/2023 16:54

YANBU OP but several people will be along soon to tell you that anything but porridge and dry bread is a luxury and you should be thankful.

Spottytoddler · 15/09/2023 16:55

Oh actually I see someone has already said it’s a treat 😬

Needmorelego · 15/09/2023 17:08

@Lorelielee you don't need own brand fish fingers - the Birds eye 6 pack is £2 in Iceland (as I said above).
Alaskan Pollack (nicer than cod).

BibbleandSqwauk · 15/09/2023 17:12

@MrsHsGirl but the Aldi ones are horrible. I'm all for own brands in general but occasionally things need to be the proper ones, Weetabix, marmite and decent tea are my personal lines in the sand.

MrsHsGirl · 15/09/2023 17:13

Really @BibbleandSqwauk ?! I genuinely couldn't taste the difference!

Cropout · 15/09/2023 17:15

Get the coop deal.
I just got 2 battered fish, pack of scampi, bag of chips, bag of peas and pack of watermelon ice lollies for a fiver.
quite often have it as our Friday night easy treat tea

Oh heck, I apologise, I was agreeing with you that food prices are nuts! I hope it didn't come across as a dig.

(I love fish fingers and waffles, btw. Especially with beans.)

Lorelielee · 15/09/2023 17:17

@Spottytoddler I know. 😅
