Just on the news - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66817795

Week after week, there is something wrong with dogs (and the owners) today, I grew up with them and this never, ever happened. Maybe because dogs were treated as dogs and not trophy animals. Awful for everyone.

Crime scene

Man attacked by two dogs near school in Stonnall dies

A man suffers fatal injuries when attacked by two dogs in a street near a school in Staffordshire.

how about just making it more difficult for the general public to have ANY type of breed of dog, make it as inconvenient and prohibitively expensive as possible with lots of training and proof needed to be able to have one the only those who are properly responsible owners and working dogs would be left

Oliotya · 16/09/2023 12:03

My children don't approach dogs either. Ever. Plenty of dogs approach them though. I've had dogs take snacks out of my babies hand in the pushchair.
Not my dog, not my problem. Muzzled and on leads imo. No ifs, no buts.

Yes but it won't happen.

Well, that's not up to you or me.

Yeah because poor people are always irresponsible Hmm

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 16/09/2023 13:12

@Girliefriendlikespuppies its not
meant to offend anyone but something needs to change, the poster who said they wouldn’t be able to afford £500 to licence their dog? Simple really don’t have a dog, I don’t have a dog at the minute as I can’t afford the upkeep both in time and money

Dullardmullard · 16/09/2023 15:03

Oliotya · 16/09/2023 10:38

All 4 for all dogs would be most sensible

By your logic then you’ve become PETA that wants no pets at all

Ffs so my father isn’t allowed his dog by this logic then.

@VeterinaryCareAssistant

Not as sinister as wanting dogs put to sleep, stabbed, shot etc like I've read on here!

Fantasising about vulnerable elderly people in care homes being forced to have a dog they're scared of all over them is really disturbing. Like really, really disturbing.

You thinking something else is equally or more sinister doesn't change how fucked up a thing it was for you to think let alone post.

ComtesseDeSpair · 15/09/2023 11:27

I suspect we could solve an enormous part of the problem if councils and housing associations prohibited dogs over a certain size and weight being kept in their properties and strictly enforced it, as is common policy in public housing (and indeed, apartment blocks generally) in many other countries. Yes yes, we’re not supposed to say it, but I’m willing to bet at least 95% of the owners of these dogs are workshy layabouts in social housing.

BS. First of all there are plenty of people in social housing who are in full time work.

Secondly the two people I know who have these dogs are drug dealers who are also business owners, presumably for money laundering purposes.

Every poor person I’ve ever met is poor, because of the bad decisions they’ve made, some of which are indeed irresponsible. My own family were brilliant at producing a new puppy every couple of years. Replacing the old one that was basically just let out to roam the streets and get picked up by the dog warden and it was cheaper to buy a new one that it was to go and pay to get the other dog released, presumably that was put to sleep. I suppose we should be grateful it was only mongrels.

I have lots of ex school friends who were parading around the lockdown pup three years ago they no longer have. Completely aside of the trauma to the children. It is irresponsible. And several hundred pounds that could’ve been far better spent.

It’s a bit abuse in care home

I already have a dog. As I explained, apart from being a much-loved pet, it’s a support to one of my DCs who has medical issues (practical support as well as emotional). A £500 dog licence won’t solve any problems and the idea was originally suggested by one of the stab’em, shoot’em posters who hate dogs.

Banning or controlling the ownership of certain breeds is the way forward not penalising normal, decent dog-owners who are nothing to do with this problem.

this..the ' feckless poor' are the ones that get cute puppies to then pass them on when they become 'typical teenage'

kitsuneghost · 16/09/2023 17:00

How about we just ban dogs from public spaces (except guide dogs). If you don't have the space, don't get a dog. That way nobody has to encounter a dog they are uncomfortable with.

BeeLaidee · 16/09/2023 17:07

Honestly, some of you have a tenuous grasp on reality. I live right next to a 355-hectare (880-acre) open public space. When I walk my dog, I rarely come across anyone except other dog walkers. Often, I don't come across anyone else at all. And you really think you are going to convince any government to pass a law that dogs are banned from public spaces? We need to deal with the problem at hand, not penalise thousands of law abiding citizens.

To bd fair that doesn't sound a prime area for pedestrians.
Our town have plenty of people walking, jogging, cycling without dogs.
Would be more if people weren't as inclined to drive to avoid them

Also many people may want to use these open spaces but have been driven out by people viewing them as dog spaces.

Theoriginalmrscillianmurphy · 16/09/2023 17:56

I saw a video of this just this morning. Absolutely heartbreaking and I just saw a couple of seconds until I realised what was happening as things like this stay in my head and bother me for weeks.

Sarvanga38 · 16/09/2023 17:59

Have the poor man’s family asked for this video to be released to help towards ensuring the ban goes through? I find it horrific that anyone would post such a video, very poor taste, and can’t say that I’d be wanting to watch it either.

Oh yes - 880 acres and yet not enough space for people to share it.

It's rather typical of attitudes which have developed over the last few years. People wanting nothing less than their own way.

Completely agree

dawngreen · 16/09/2023 18:22

Nothing ever changes same blah 1960 - 2023 licence, ban breed etc

Crime gangs, and back street breeders

covid times type but our children family love our dog - then WTF is all the dogs dumped ???

Responsible owners are sick of your crap!!

Toohot2trot · 16/09/2023 18:32

That is nonsense please don't waste your time doing this, it does not work. The adrenaline that the attacking dog has going through it, it wouldn't even feel something like that.

Shadowchaser · 16/09/2023 18:57

I’ve just read some statistics that state that out of 50 XL bullie studs found on pets4homes, 32 were related to a dog that killed a human.
One particular line, the ‘Kimbo’ bloodline (a dog with a 30% inbreeding COI!!!) was linked to over ten documented attacks, including the fatal attack of an 80 year old woman in 2016. These dogs carrying these genes have gone on to sire multiple litters.

All XL can be rooted back to Pitbull terriers, an illegal breed which in itself should have been a red flag yet the govt. has not acted. One very popular stud ‘Juggernaut’ has American pbt as parents, another highly used bitch Bossys Victoria Secret can be traced back entirely to the pit bull.

It was also found that 99.7% of bully litters advertising on Pets4Home were found to be unlicensed.

American bully owners are deluded.

Milliemoo6 · 16/09/2023 19:04

Muzzling ALL dogs in public is not the answer. It is quite frankly ridiculous. Yes dog attacks happen. But so do car crashes, hit and runs, physical attacks, serial assault. I don't see anyone advocating that all men should wear a chastity belt when out in public so they can't rape anyone. The responsibility should be on the owner to properly train their dog, and all dogs should be registered and licensed so issues can be identified and owners held to account. Blanket statements just reflect the naivety of the person making them and you can't call yourself a dog lover then advocate for removing dogs from public spaces. Someone said that their night out was ruined by a dog begging at a table! Get a grip!
