Writing a review of a product…

’haven’t used it yet because I got it for my cousin’s birthday and she hasn’t opened it.

why write the review then?! Are people genuinely that stupid?

"We are currently experience higher call volumes than usual"

I always mutter, "Well, employ more people, then!".

"Your call is important to us"
You could have fooled me

"We are currently experience higher call volumes than usual"
What's 'usual', then?

That drives me crazy! I've been listening to the same companies play that higher volume of calls crap for years.

I'd have more respect for them if they changed it to "you're going to be waiting for about an hour, we're a bit sorry about that but not sorry enough to employ more staff so we could answer your call sometime soon."

michalwave · 26/09/2023 07:17

I don’t even mind the waiting so much, it’s when I’ve waited 20 minutes, and then I’m cut off that irks.

I know systems go wrong but sometimes it seems like a tactic to reduce call volumes.

I've been asked to review hair straighteners I bought, I have only used them once. Then they sent me a reminder about it. I don't feel I've used them enough to give a useful review yet. But I hate feeling like I have to leave one. I can see ppl giving an explanation that they haven't used it yet altho it's obviously useless for other customers!

And what's with the hold music that varies in volume? You can be getting on with cleaning the whole house something else with the phone on speaker, then all of a sudden the volume increases and makes your ears bleed.

I always assume that if they are open 9-5 they get lots of calls in that time but not for the rest of the day and they use a 24 hour average.

Say they get 100 call between 9-5 and 0 the rest of the time then they have an 'average' of 4 per hour over 24 hours but in reality they get 12-13 per hour during operating hours.

Its stupid but its the only way it makes sense in my head to always have higher than average calls.

Even worse is when you've been on hold for an hour or more and finally get through to someone who has a real poor phone signal, i.e. sounds like they're underwater or very faint, or crackly, and you get a sinking feeling that you're going to have to go through it all again as you simply can't hear the other person. A million times worse since covid and so many call centre staff working from home where the employer hasn't provided a dedicated phone line, so they're just working off a mobile phone.

michalwave · 26/09/2023 09:53

@user1497207191 yes I’ve had that too.

Sometimes if I can remember I ask the agent to take my name and number and to call me back if we get cut off. Not all of them agree but a few do.

Hold music

Here lets pick the fastest beat most anoying three bars of music known to mankind and put it on repeat just to reallllly fustrate the person on hold.....

Yes, I used to wonder about this kind of "review", too. But I saw elsewhere somebody say that Amazon sends persistent emails to you if you buy something, reminding you to review the item you bought, and that the emails don't make it obvious that you are being invited to leave an actual review on the product webpage for everybody to see.

I just always ignore those requests and delete the emails.
I wonder if some people feel they have go respond?

This is a terrible one!

My 2 elderly aunt lived in a city that has a casino nearby. For the locals, the casino had special offers and perks if they join their club. Free meals, extra gambling offers, etc.

The eldest aunt died so the younger was tying up her sister's estate and whatnot. One of the things was to call the casino to let them know to take dead aunt off their mailing list. Younger aunt was forced to listen to the hold music...name of the song...'Another One Bites the Dust' by Queen....😭😂

I only realised when I called my bank the other day why hold music is a thing…listening to any sort of tune is better than just listening to the phone ringing repeatedly!

My housing association helpfully once had the "hold music" as the sound of a dead line / someone who has just hung up on you.
