How bothered are you about Small Boats?

1000 replies

Spinet · 14/09/2023 11:19

I think the idea that people think Small Boats with illegal immigrants on them is a really pressing issue is made up by politicians to have something to campaign on. Am I right? Is this a pressing issue as far as you're concerned?

I'm not really talking about immigration/ asylum seekers in general, just the small boats everyone keeps mentioning. If you're worried about people dying in the channel I get that, but do you think people finding their way here illegally is a major issue for our country at the moment?

I think it's clear I don't but I will accept I'm wrong about this being a made up issue if the majority disagree with me.

If you want to vote YABU= this is one of my top ten concerns. YANBU = I don't think it's a top ten issue for the country.

I’m not the one asking others to give up property

The whole boat thing made me laugh. Of course we won’t know if you own it but I’m sure you won’t admit it

I must have missed the poster who was asking others to give up property.

Or is it a bit like the post that linked to all of Labour's woke policies?

What is it you want to do with second homes exactly?

Feels appropriate !

🤣

They are going to need a LOT of nuts to keep the 🐿 going between now and the GE.

Any takers on the refugee in the home front while we’re at it?

There must be a few on here

I think we should have a sensible conversation about what kind of country we want to live in.

Do we want to live in one where some people own multiple homes that they leave empty and others have none?
Do we want to live in a country where a multi-millionaire pays a lower proportion of their income in tax than teachers and nurses do?

Or do we want to live in a country that is more equitable?

Dymaxion · 14/09/2023 19:45

Labour have promised to build over the green belt as part of a levelling up scheme.

@Lastchancechica again the Conservatives have pipped them to the post, all the housing built in this area in the last 13 years has been built on agricultural land. Copycat Labour, need to get their own policies ! Grin

I have no doubt there are already posters on here who do much to support refugees, including taking them into their homes.

Do you offer a room?

Rummikub · 14/09/2023 19:47

Once an asylum seeker has refugee status then they are treated as U.K. nationals. So they can finally work.

I might be interested in a swap if that would work ? Wink

Swap to Ukraine? Or maybe Syria?

I reckon you’ll get some takers there

Dymaxion · 14/09/2023 19:50

@EasternStandard I thinking of more along the lines of a swap for DH Grin

IClaudine · 14/09/2023 19:53

That really is not the gotcha you think it it is.

Some people will be able and want to to offer homes to refugees, or to take care of disabled or unwell relatives at home or home school their children etc. etc.

Not everyone can though, or will want to, which is why we vote in governments and pay our taxes so that these services can be organised and provided centrally.

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 19:53

The thing that gets to me the most is that the lefties never pause and consider the POV of the real asylum seekers already here living six to one room in a bedsit.

These people do not stand a chance of ever moving into a proper home, with the numbers already swelling to hundreds of thousands, the resources and charities intended to support them are overwhelmed.

Even with the best will in the world of force selling every single empty house, and starting the build across the green belt tomorrow we have nowhere near enough houses, and won’t for decades.

I feel very sorry for the genuine refugees fleeing real persecution, they may never have the quality of life they deserve because the do gooders haven’t the sense to work it out, properly, how all of these people can be adequately cared for.

On the left there is a total disregard and indifference to the people that are already here, like they don’t matter. We fundraise and support an Afghan community here in our area, and
I can’t imagine when they will ever find a home. There are no houses available anywhere here.

It feels like the left are always dragging down and moaning about life here in the U.K, and now they are desperate to destroy all quality of life that exists, to make the country as dire as their perceptions. I am so worried about our future and this wonderful nation.

As long as he can still watch 'opal diving outback trucking deep sea police' I think he would be quite happy in Calais, he has always wanted to live near the sea Wink plus they have lovely cheap Wine

In the interest of factual accuracy there were just under 240,000 refugees in the UK in November 2022. By the government's own estimate there are 700,000 empty homes in England.

Do they need 3 homes each?

Legale · 14/09/2023 19:56

I've had a few Ukrainian clients who have searched nonstop until they've found volunteering work and/or paid employment, alongside taking English classes and applying for additional qualifications to find better work.
Very often followed by someone born locally who starts by telling me they won't work "in a shop, behind a desk, with the public, with children, no animals, definitely not outdoors...".
Economic problems can't always be placed squarely on the shoulders of migrants. They male a good scapegoat for some, but it's the tip of a very large iceberg.

France.

Legale · 14/09/2023 19:58

@IClaudine I wondered that too! The government has run the country into the ground, our economy is pitiful and standard of living is dire in many parts. Definitely not wonderful and prosperous!

YeOldeBuxomWench · 14/09/2023 19:58

I care about housing, healthcare, education and the economy. Policies relating to those get my vote. Not shitty culture wars.

Given that we have shortages of workers in some fields, I'm not that bothered about immigration.

That figure of 700,000 was debunked ages ago as you well know.

You conveniently have not included all of the British families living in temporary or unsuitable housing. The homeless and those living day to day sofa surfing.
