How bothered are you about Small Boats?

1000 replies

Spinet · 14/09/2023 11:19

I think the idea that people think Small Boats with illegal immigrants on them is a really pressing issue is made up by politicians to have something to campaign on. Am I right? Is this a pressing issue as far as you're concerned?

I'm not really talking about immigration/ asylum seekers in general, just the small boats everyone keeps mentioning. If you're worried about people dying in the channel I get that, but do you think people finding their way here illegally is a major issue for our country at the moment?

I think it's clear I don't but I will accept I'm wrong about this being a made up issue if the majority disagree with me.

If you want to vote YABU= this is one of my top ten concerns. YANBU = I don't think it's a top ten issue for the country.

Yeah, you do that. From your special log book

I've always had to show my passport to go to France and to come back as well. I've even had to show a letter for my son from his Dad saying he gave permission for him to leave the country with me as my new married name is different to my son's surname.

nopuppiesallowed · 14/09/2023 18:18

Sigh...Let's stop this argument now. All those in favour of allowing boat people into the UK, put your hand up. Good. Now shift your bedrooms around so you can show your compassion by offering one of them a place to stay for a year. We'll done. Form an orderly queue.....🙄

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 18:13

Landlords?

Generally landlords to do leave their properties empty for years at at time, it does not make much business sense.

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 18:19

Legale · 14/09/2023 18:10

@Lastchancechica Of course, that's exactly what to take from my post.
Obviously not. However I very much doubt you, and the others posting things such as "no wonder Italy has a far right government", do.
It'll horrify you, but I think entrance to the UK for these people should be made legal and safe. Yes there will need to be controls in place, but let's remove the need to risk everything in an unsafe dinghy. I'm sure you'll take this to mean "we should let everyone in, no holds barred", which is absolutely not the case, but more needs to be done to create a safe, legal process to tackle smugglers and the unnecessary loss of life.

Where are you actually going to PUT the tens of millions that will arrive with your open borders?

How will you afford the pensions?
The social care, assuming you won’t break the law by discriminating with age/disability? The GP places? School places? The infrastructure needed to deal with the largest influx in history thanks to your open borders?

Answer these questions.

Because unless you are going to offer tents with no pensions, health care and education mathematically it is totally and utterly impossible.

You would create a subset underclass overnight.

How many on here are hosting a refugee or will do I
wonder

Especially from Syria

@jgw1 ?

@EasternStandard To quote @LuwakCoffee "No wonder the Italians have a far right government!"
I was referring to that post.

You made up that drs need a salt language test and that’s why they are on boats - not true. You made up that you can travel internationally without a passport- not true. And so on.

an increase in population does put pressure on housing and public services. It’s not the only thing that does that but it is one factor.

making up different nonsense doesn’t win any debates. It just loses you respect.

No one has been able to demonstrate a way of obtaining a visa for a doctor without a SELT. But I am quite happy to learn that it is possible if someone is able to show what alternative English qualifications would be acceptable and obtainable by someone in Afganistan or Syria.

I have not made up that one can travel internationally to and from the UK without showing a visa - the most obvious example being the common travel area on the island of Ireland.

@Lastchancechica The entire UK is not the exact same as where you live. Where I am, there's no issue getting a GP, dentist or school place. We moved areas a few months ago and within weeks had all of the above sorted. No difficulties.

As I assumed, you did take it to mean a free for all, even after I also specifically stated I didn't mean that. So to answer that part - there would be no imaginary massive influx.

Idk but I definitely think it’s selfish to travel in a boat of all things when people out there need boats

And then talk about second homes

Kind of funny really

derxa · 14/09/2023 18:26

The small boats issue affects me not a jot. I don't fear or worry about the people coming across on small boats because I will never meet them and I am wealthy enough to afford everything I need in life. I suspect that's the case for most of the posters on here.

How greedy to sail in a boat when someone else could use it.

Absolutely. And to evade customs and immigration restrictions as she seems to be admitting. Bet she has a great big house but doesn’t offer any of it to the homeless.

The amount of times that second homes post has been made and then sailing around in a boat 😬

SueVineer · 14/09/2023 18:38

There’s nothing in that article you posted about people owning 12 unoccupied homes. And that article just claims there are unoccupied houses- we don’t know why they are unoccupied.

Best some asylum seekers could live in that boat. But of a cheek to suggest confiscating people’s houses.

She’s not ‘evading customs and immigration’. What she’s doing is completely legal. You are only required to present a passport to a border force officer if required. If you arrive at a port with no border force presence then you don’t need to show a passport because there is no one to show it to. This is hardly news, it’s always been like this. You report your arrival after the fact, either by post or on the sPCR website.

There are hundreds of ports in the U.K., the vast majority have no border force presence at all.

We should give them better boats

Very first response

And yet no taker by the very concerned boat owners on this thread

Every time I see that second home thing it’ll give me a laugh

Legale · 14/09/2023 18:44

Isn't there just one poster who has said she owns a boat? Who else is talking about their boat? Genuinely missed all the other posts from boat owners.

Look on the criteria for a skilled worker visa. There are a whole host of other qualifications that are acceptable. The selt thing is just something you made up.

you claimed you travelled from the uk to Canada (among others) without a passport. Stop making stuff up, honestly, it does you no good.

Yes only one. The one who wants people to give up property

But not theirs

Yes I believe it’s @jgw1 she apparently uses it to evade immigration and customs laws herself though. Perhaps we should be careful- she may be El Chapo.

Dymaxion · 14/09/2023 18:50

The one thing that Sir needs to answer is with his open border policy where exactly is he going to put everyone? He never ever answers the questions on practicalities. Nor does anyone on here.

@Lastchancechica have you got a link to Labours open border policy or a statement ?
It feels a bit like the Conservatives have rather pipped them to the post on that policy given their record breaking immigration figures Wink

Yants · 14/09/2023 18:51

The small boats is just a deliberate distraction technique, to distract everyone from the hundreds of thousands of unskilled, uneducated economic migrants that are entering the country by conventional means.
