How bothered are you about Small Boats?

1000 replies

Spinet · 14/09/2023 11:19

I think the idea that people think Small Boats with illegal immigrants on them is a really pressing issue is made up by politicians to have something to campaign on. Am I right? Is this a pressing issue as far as you're concerned?

I'm not really talking about immigration/ asylum seekers in general, just the small boats everyone keeps mentioning. If you're worried about people dying in the channel I get that, but do you think people finding their way here illegally is a major issue for our country at the moment?

I think it's clear I don't but I will accept I'm wrong about this being a made up issue if the majority disagree with me.

If you want to vote YABU= this is one of my top ten concerns. YANBU = I don't think it's a top ten issue for the country.

Yes, I'm concerned. Immigration isn't always, automatically, a good thing. Immigration can be good, neutral or bad. It depends who you let in. If you let in an Indian cancer surgeon and his wife, or a Canadian with a PhD in engineering, or a Japanese biology professor, or an Australian poet, or whatever, they are going to enrich your country. A violent, illiterate drug dealer, or a man who has fled his home country on suspicion of rape or sex trafficking, is NOT going to enrich your country.

The left-wing nutcases who want open borders are like religious fundamentalists, or members of a cult. You get the same glazed expression, the same intolerance, the same rage against those who disagree, the same contempt for alternative viewpoints, the same smugness, the same fanaticism. Unfortunately, they have a disproportionate influence over our media and universities. I keep being told these people are "frightened refugees" and that they're "fleeing war and persecution". But when I look on google images, or watch youtube clips (not the biased, carefully selected footage we're shown on the BBC) all I see are boatloads of fit, often quite arrogant, young men. Presumably they've left their girlfriends and sisters and children and grandparents to face all the "war and persecution" on their own.

It is a cult - a genuine brainwashing cult. The impartial bbc is the worst culprit.

Jeevesnotwooster · 14/09/2023 17:39

Yep. Why not.

You manage to sound quite balanced and erudite in your first paragraph and then go and ruin it all in the second by talking about nutcases, cults, and smugness like that's a balanced way to talk about people with opinions that differ from your own.

And as for being able to judge a person's life story from a clip on youtube... those are some judgement skills you've got there. Supernatural or even fantastical, I'd say.

How are you going to determine that the Japanese biology professor or Australian poet is also not fleeing their home country on suspcicion of rape?

And there it is. The lefty sanctimonious judgement right there. I notice you didn’t actually address or listen to any of the points made 🤔

"Like religious fundamentalists or members of a cult" 😂If you're bringing religion into it, 'first cast out the mote in thine own eye.' It must be pretty painful by now.

What points made? I agreed with the first paragraph. As discussed. Then it lurched off into reactionary rage.

people who immigrate by legal means have to provide background searches to show they have no criminal history.

user9630721458 · 14/09/2023 17:51

I think people will keep coming, in ever greater numbers. People have always done this - look at the Europeans who sailed to Australia or to America - plenty of poor, desperate people chanced the passage to go somewhere better. Europe could work together to try to gain control, but it may well not be pretty. How would Italy, for instance, stop boats, or us? I can't imagine any nice way to do it. So, it's a concern, but not something I think can be fixed -the world has always changed.

I didn’t pick up ‘rage’ just exasperation.

Legale · 14/09/2023 17:53

@Spinet The post in question did just spiral into froth and whataboutery. All it was missing was a "lefty" comment. Bonus points for "wokey lefty" (although I'll cringe so hard my face will turn inside out).

In response to your question OP, no I'm not bothered about the boats. I don't know anyone IRL who frets about them either.

Fine. People who disagree with you are sanctimonious and people who don't are exasperated. I feel much the same just the people are different.

I have checked my log and here are some examples of trips I have made without passing through passport control at either end of the journey.

UK to France, France to UK, UK to Belgium, UK to Holland, Holland to UK, US to Canada, Canada to UK.

Even sailing into and out of Port of Dover did not involve a passport check.

Leaving out various Schengen crossings as well.

Did ye aye?

Yes I did, would you like me to list all the ports that these visits involved, they are all listed in my log book, so its not difficult to look them up.

Are we talking about the Tory party, NatCs, Reclaim or some other group?

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 17:58

The one thing that Sir needs to answer is with his open border policy where exactly is he going to put everyone? He never ever answers the questions on practicalities. Nor does anyone on here.

Do you know how many rental houses we have available here? Zero.

How many spaces left at the GP? Zero. Waiting list only.

How many school places left? Zero.
Even independent schools are full.

We are at capacity and have been for years.

The lefty magical thinking that we can just build all over the Green belt job done is farcical. It will be contested heavily in every court in the land for decades. It won’t happen. That’s perhaps the point.

Homelessness will rise and rise, living standards will drop like a stone and soon we will become like Italy with a far right government is that what you want?

There's plenty been made up on this thread.

Like the notion that asylum seekers are some how illegal.
Like the notion that there are millions of refugees in the UK.

oh yes, plenty made up. Quite a bit by you.

EasternStandard · 14/09/2023 18:00

So why aren’t people waltzing in if no passport needed?

I’m pretty sure I showed my passport at UK border at recent entry though as did everyone else in the queue

Zodfa · 14/09/2023 18:00

Small boats ought ideally to be stopped. A fair immigration system is not one which allows people an advantage purely because of their ability to undertake dangerous journeys.

With a few exceptions, most people who have reached France could be looked after perfectly well there (the general racism of the French aside). We should take more asylum seekers, but this should be done by a fair method and agreements with the EU - not just relying on people to take stupid risks.

The government's focus on illegal entry is however out of proportion and seems largely to distract us from (a) the absence of serious effort to prevent visa overstaying; (b) the fact that plenty of people get residence permits who, in the absence of serious public spending commitments, probably shouldn't.

Edited

In the interests of factual accuracy. There are estimated to be over a million empty homes in England, so there really is no need to build over the green belt for housing.
School rolls in England are starting to fall with the declining birth rate, and anyway since I am told the vast majority of migrants are young men and not children that will not be a problem either.

Another calling out from the echo Chamber that doesn’t know a SINGLE person that worries about uncontrolled immigration.
