How bothered are you about Small Boats?

1000 replies

Spinet · 14/09/2023 11:19

I think the idea that people think Small Boats with illegal immigrants on them is a really pressing issue is made up by politicians to have something to campaign on. Am I right? Is this a pressing issue as far as you're concerned?

I'm not really talking about immigration/ asylum seekers in general, just the small boats everyone keeps mentioning. If you're worried about people dying in the channel I get that, but do you think people finding their way here illegally is a major issue for our country at the moment?

I think it's clear I don't but I will accept I'm wrong about this being a made up issue if the majority disagree with me.

If you want to vote YABU= this is one of my top ten concerns. YANBU = I don't think it's a top ten issue for the country.

Really?

After you have selected Afganistan you need to choose a test code and then press find now.

Or you could search for Afganistan on the complete list of test centres.

Good luck!

I have entered the UK and other countries many times without showing a passport, is that a massive problem?

Are you proposing for example removing the common travel area on the island of Ireland?

Are you proposing having border officers at every possible port of entry?

There are border officers at every border crossing other than in Northern Ireland due to the Good Friday Agreement and common travel area.

Throwncrumbs · 14/09/2023 16:22

Wait until another 30 years have passed and see if all the do gooders opinions have changed. I prob won’t be around to hear them all saying ‘ I wish I had realised how wrong I was’ because it’s going to happen!

EasternStandard · 14/09/2023 16:22

If people are at the French border paying for a smuggler in the thousands and they are ready to work as a doctor or dentist in U.K. there must be SELT centres in France

It is a problem if you are looking to set up a whole life there, yes.

Where are people paying to get on boats again?

French border maybe? Perhaps they have SELT there

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 16:24

Otherwise anyone could pitch up anywhere without a passport, open a bank account…oh.

Throwncrumbs · 14/09/2023 16:25

How are they affording to pay many thousands to the smugglers, where does that money come from? There can’t be many men left in any of these ‘ war torn ‘ countries they are fleeing from…those poor mothers, sisters, daughters all left behind !

That's wierd. Everytime I have sailed across the Channel I have not been through border control.

Most of them won't be eligible to vote in a GE but crack on

And it’s ridiculous to imagine all immigrants vote Labour.

I am glad we are all in agreement that it is not possible for a doctor, dentist or anyone else to apply for a UK visa in Afganistan or Syria. It is good to put to bed the myth that there are routes from those countries to the UK.

they get access to a dentist which is impossible for millions of British people, they get free gym membership - a luxury most can't afford.

@motomum23 really? Free gym membership? What on earth makes you think this?

Asylum seekers don’t get free gym membership.

nor this magic available dentist either.

sparklefresh · 14/09/2023 11:35

YANBU. It's a witch hunt dreamt up by the Tories to give the masses an enemy and distract them from the government's many, many failings.

My thoughts exactly….as the saying goes ‘it’s not the poor in boats that’s destroying this country…it’s the rich who don’t give a damn about anyone’ or words to that effect!
even my staunch church-going ultra Christian relatives are spouting our rubbish verbatim from the daily nazi & daily excess…makes my piss boil!

If they get here via France why can’t they apply there?

Since the boats have doctors and dentists on them

I think it's the tip of a hike iceberg. At the end of the day we spend millions housing these people, they get access to a dentist which is impossible for millions of British people, they get free gym membership - a luxury most can't afford. I'm all for helping people live a better life but it should be on an equal basis to the lower quality of life here not better than.

You been reading the daily mail again? Gym membership-yeah right!

Also what “many countries” is she claiming to have entered without a passport? Unless she just means the Schengen zone.

EasternStandard · 14/09/2023 16:28

Because the UK government would refuse to process the application. In order to apply for a UK visa, you have to be present legally in the country you apply from.

The government could of course change that at any point and thus reduce the numbers crossing in small boats, but they do not appear to want to do that.

Showdogworkingdog · 14/09/2023 16:31

It’s a bit like throwing raw meat to a dog to distract it. It’s a tiny problem but visible and divisive.

Quite how anyone thinks that the 30k people who come over in small boats each year are responsible for an NHS waiting list of 7.5 million people need to give their heads a wobble. I’m ashamed of the country we’ve become, punching down at those who have less than nothing instead of looking up. It’s nasty.

SueVineer · 14/09/2023 16:29

Would you like a list of the countries I have been to without having to show a passport to get in?

RudsyFarmer · 14/09/2023 16:31

Climate change is going to see people fighting for resources. So I don’t even worry about who is welcome and who isn’t any more.

It won’t be too far in the future when there are wars over land and the names the land used to be known as won’t matter anymore. It will just be land.

beAsensible1 · 14/09/2023 16:32

INeedAnotherName · 14/09/2023 12:01

Yes I'm bothered. Where the fuck are we going to put them all? No housing, no doctors, no dentists, benefits being cut, councils going bankrupt, no mental health provisions. We, as a nation, cannot look after our own at the moment, we certainly can't care for others.

More than 800 people made the journey on Saturday, bringing the total for the year so far to almost 21,000
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/sep/03/highest-daily-number-of-channel-small-boat-crossings-for-2023-recorded

if we let the get jobs they could pay rent

caringcarer · 14/09/2023 16:32

@FreshStart12345 actually you are wrong. All my ancestors originated from Devon or Somerset and I've traced them back to 1789 and no immigrants among them. Just because your family has a lot of immigrants in it, don't assume all families do.

It won't. That rhetoric has been trotted out for decades about various groups of asylum seekers. I remember a lot of fuss about the Kurds, for example.
