i know people will say its none of my business but i will be watching him when she goes back to work and i really cant imagine myself shouting this name out around tesco's.

is there ever a right time to tell someone the name they have chosen is terrible or is it always best to not say a thing.

i can see his whole life being spoilt by this name (yes it is that bad)

I lurve it

Henry is quite a popular name now, along with all the other old fashioned boys names like George, Billy, Alfie, Charlie, Stanley, Jake etc.

All of those names would have been incredibly old fashioned 20 years ago when I was a kid but have made a massive comeback, and are not considered strange in any way.

I'm confused to why you feel so offended by it Julia.

nooka · 03/03/2008 22:20

In what way could being called Henry spoil your life? It was the 34th most popular name for boys in 2007 (with Harry coming in as no.5) so not that uncommon, but still

DforDiva · 03/03/2008 22:21

lots of henry s here, lovely name
thought something made up or something
henry is proper english name

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 03/03/2008 22:23

so glad you are not my sister

VVVQVJournalist · 03/03/2008 22:24

I can see his whole life being spoilt by a bitter aunt who thinks only of herself and how she'll look.

Then again, if you will insist on shopping at Tescos

MadamePlatypus · 03/03/2008 22:28

Its a common British name, its spelt correctly. I think you are being a little shortsighted. A name goes with a person. Presumably once you have fallen in love with your nephew you will fall in love with the name.

hester · 03/03/2008 22:31

I recently met a newborn Herbert.

Count your blessings, auntie

specialmagiclady · 03/03/2008 22:33

My lovely little brother is called Henry. Also called Henners, Hen, Hank... he's a very nice man.

NorthernLurker · 03/03/2008 22:37

Very amusing thread - right up to where the name turned out to be Henry and then I just felt bemused - Henry is a lovely name! Harry is super too, or Hal or even H.

DaDaDa · 03/03/2008 22:39

Blimey. Henry. You're crackers aren't you?

Annabellemary · 03/03/2008 22:40

Henry is a beautiful name. You are being very unkind. Don't breath a word to your sister, you will ruin your relationship in some way even if she is too polite to show it.

jekyllandhyde · 03/03/2008 22:43

love henry

RahRahRachel · 03/03/2008 22:45

I was expecting something a bit more unusual tbh - Horatio, Humbert, Hatface etc.

Henry is a bit pedestrian to get worked up over. Can't see it ruining his life.

thestands · 03/03/2008 22:48

well, JuliaRoberts didn't come back.
I have to say I have never been fond of dsis calling her dd1 Mia, her nickname is
Meezie, which I think is even worse. BUT, I have never and will never tell her so.

QuintessentialShadow · 03/03/2008 22:56

Henry is lovely. My grandfather was Henry, and my DHs middle name is Henry. It is also my DHs bio-fathers name, too. It is one of these timeless beautiful names.

Why do you dislike it so? Did you know a Henry once who was horrid to you?

JayneF · 03/03/2008 23:07

Henry will grow right into his name..and it will grow right into you too!. We called our son Wilfred . Not one person in our family liked it other than my husband and I. At 17 mths Wilf could not be anything else and yes, ..his Aunt yells his name out loud without a care in the world.

zazen · 03/03/2008 23:10

I like the name Henry also, and wonder why someone wouldn't call a child by their name - it is kindof rude not to, don't you think, just because you don't like it?

I was thinking it must be Humperdink

JayneF · 03/03/2008 23:17

Aww Zazen,...that made me laugh so much!!!

My second baby is due tomorrow, and like the first we have kept the name under wrps...but I THINK i MAY just throw Humperdink into the mix to see the response!!!

fortyplus · 03/03/2008 23:24

juliaroberts's children are called Wayne and Waynetta.

No wonder she thinks Henry is an awful name

zazen · 03/03/2008 23:27

Engelbert Humperdink is one of my heroes! Good luck JayneF hope all goes swimmingly for you and your little Humperdinky.

Scattybird · 03/03/2008 23:33

Really don't worry about it. It's snot your kid as such.

Who gives a flying as long as they are good parents. People who worry about what other children are wearing and what their parents wear/look like/are called are fuckwits anyway.

JayneF · 03/03/2008 23:36

Thank you Zazen,... still smiling about that one!

onebatmother · 03/03/2008 23:40

Shall we leave the poor girl alone? Go on.

I can understand that it might not fit into everyone's world - just as fortyplus might be embarrassed to shout out Waynetta in Waitrose.

fortyplus · 03/03/2008 23:47

I once knew someone whose child was called Ben but when she shouted it came out as 'BAAAYYYYN!'
