i know people will say its none of my business but i will be watching him when she goes back to work and i really cant imagine myself shouting this name out around tesco's.

is there ever a right time to tell someone the name they have chosen is terrible or is it always best to not say a thing.

i can see his whole life being spoilt by this name (yes it is that bad)

PMSL at the thought theat Henry could be described as a name that someone's will be spoilt by!

It's a perfectly nice name but even if it wasn't YABU.

newgirl · 04/03/2008 20:41

i know loads of henrys - you need to move somewhere posher

mumeeee · 04/03/2008 21:05

Thereis not anything wring with Henry.

mumeeee · 04/03/2008 21:06

Can't type tonight! I meant there is nothing wrong with Henry.

nooka · 04/03/2008 21:50

This has been a fun thread (although built on a very odd premis) but I'm left with the thought that Isambard is a truely cool name. Might call a future cat that

lalalonglegs · 04/03/2008 22:38

One of my ex-colleagues called Isambard - shortened it to Bard - but still completely preposterous. He was only about 30 and didn't smoke cigars or wear a stovepipe hat.

Can I just reiterate, there is nothing wrong with Henry which can be shortened to Harry just like our dear brave soldier prince.

im still lmfao at "hymen"

"hymen put down that ladies basket right away!!!"

harpsichordcarrier · 05/03/2008 09:08

If I had a boy I was very keen to call him Petroc
thank goodness I only seem to produce girls

alibubbles · 05/03/2008 13:31

For today only, here is my Henry - Ski instructor, would you like him to teach your kids, he has mums queuing up for private lessons

He likes his name, he has been called "Little H" despite being a rugby hunk

rydercup · 05/03/2008 13:43

OK -I refuse to take offence but my DS2 is a Henry.....each to their own I say (I also have a George!!). Classic names in my mind that will stand the test of time... hence the fact it is still being used now 'some 50 years later'

However, we often call him 'Henners' which might be more preferable for you!!!!

PortAndLemon · 05/03/2008 14:02

I think you are seriously losing all sense of proportion here. "i can see his whole life being spoilt by this name (yes it is that bad)"? "he will never be one of the popular boys at school"?

Henry hasn't died out, so there isn't a "reason it died out". In fact, over the last five years or so it's been steadily increasing in popularity and is currently (as pp said) the 34th most popular boys' name in England and Wales. Henri, granted, is more unusual, but most of your rantiest messages were when you thought it was being spelled Henry.

In fact, I really think that this thread is a wind-up thread. In which case, well done as it is a corker.

Wuxiapian · 05/03/2008 18:08

I think Henry's a great name - real good and solid.

Too many nancy-fied names about these days.

BeckyHelen · 06/03/2008 02:57

Henry/i is a perfectly ordinary and traditional name. Personally it would not be at the top of my list of names, but it is hardly a name to get in a state about is it? Some more modern names that are popular I would say were "terrible", but not Henry. It is a good traditional name and I wouldn't argue with anyone who wanted to call their child it.

I might understand your protest if your nephew was going to live with a name like Horatio or Horace, or Hannibal!. But 99.99% of people would accept the name Henry, even if they didn't like it themselves. You are overeacting. GIVE YOUR SISTER A BREAK!
BTW my grandfather was called William Henry. A perfectly sensible name.
