To think the amazon delivery man was being unreasonable

I didn't want to answer the door for a delivery, I was cooking lunch. It was a multipack of toothpaste through amazon, less than £10, so not expensive. Rather than just leaving it at the front door, the delivery man went around the back where he could see me cooking 😐

OP posts:
givemeasunnyday · 13/09/2023 04:45

And it was the embarrassment of them knowing I knew they'd caught me ignoring them.

Well, that could have been avoided if you had just answered the door. I hope you are also embarrassed about wasting the delivery driver's time by having to traipse around to the back door. What a lot of fuss about nothing - he saw you cooking, so what?!

sashh · 13/09/2023 05:00

Did he come in and demand a portion of what you were cooking?

EasternEcho · 13/09/2023 05:04

How is it that you don't think it's rude to ignore the delivery man when he is trying to deliver the package you ordered, but he's rude for trying to do his job properly? Is he supposed to have mind reading powers to know you want it left outside and xray vision to know what was in the package? How some people get through life is beyond me.

Amwondering69 · 13/09/2023 05:20

You could have answered the door like a normal person and said thank you !

sashh · 13/09/2023 05:47

A couple of years ago I was watching TV with a friend, it was hot so I had the portable AC on, you have to vent it through a window.

Because of the noise of TV and the AC I didn't hear the door.

So the delivery driver shouted 'hello' through the open window to tell me there was a delivery, he actually handed it through the window.

I wasn't cooking.

I wasn't naked.

I thought he was quite reasonable.

I realise now I should have made a complaint, asked for him to be sacked, posted on AIBU and clutched my pearls tighter.

ohdamnitjanet · 13/09/2023 05:49

Don’t think this post is going the way you thought….,,
I really feel for delivery drivers, it’s a pressured not particularly well paid job and people who deliberately make it harder for them really get my par boiled goat. Get over yourself.

Wouldyouguess · 13/09/2023 05:55

Were you naked that you did not want him to see you cook?

alpenguin · 13/09/2023 05:58

We’re you cooking up a poo op?

they always deliver when I dare go poo. They also have instructions to just leave in porch

Wonderwhyibother · 13/09/2023 06:05

So you ordered something, then couldn't be bothered to answer the door because cooking your precious meal was more inportant and then decided to complain on here hoping to get sympathy because the delivery driver did their job.

You are a complete cock womble.

Delivery drivers lives are utter shite with the pressure they are under to get parcels (and the sheer amount) delivered in time. Had it not arrived when it stated no doubt you'd be spouting off about that too. Give your head a damn wobble and stop making other people's lives difficult.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 13/09/2023 06:27

He could probably smell the cooking & realised someone was in, or went round to leave it on the back door step as that's more secure than the front door.
To actually make a thread about it and be defensive when told YABU makes me think you've complained unreasonably before about deliveries and he's got the measure of you.

pictoosh · 13/09/2023 06:31

I agree with you @Wonderwhyibother. It's a long busy frantic day being a delivery driver.
That driver is an actual person with a job OP - you ordered the toothpaste to be brought to your house. He brought it to your house. He is not your personal fetch and carry service.
Do your bit and answer the fucking door Lady Muck.

Zanatdy · 13/09/2023 06:36

Nothing wrong with that. What’s it with mumsnet and not answering the door. You ordered a parcel. Just leave the cooking for 10 seconds

Menomave · 13/09/2023 06:38

You are definitely being unreasonable and I can't believe you've asked the question or think you have something to moan about!

Some of my Amazon delivery people dump parcels on the doorstep in full view of the street, at risk of being stolen, and don't even ring the doorbell. 10ft to the right of the door is my side path with a small gate and wall - it would take 10 seconds to hide the parcel behind it - they wouldn't even need to open the gate.

I'm so grateful to those that take the extra time to come round the back and place it at the back door if we're not home - they're rare creatures unfortunately

PurpleFlower1983 · 13/09/2023 06:39

YABU, you’re rightly embarrassed for not answering the door. They were doing their job.

Doris86 · 13/09/2023 06:53

How dare he want to make sure the parcel was delivered safely, not be able to read your mind that you wanted it left at the front door, and not come round the back (where obviously no fences or other barriers to entry existed), so that you had to suffer the indignity of him seeing you cooking (oh the shame and embarrassment).

Simplelobsterhat · 13/09/2023 06:58

I started off sympathetic. I actually don't think anyone should go through a (presumably bolted as you say unlocked) gate into someone's garden uninvited. It's reasonable to expect that's a private space, and you could have a dog shut there or something. I'm surprised how many people think that's to be expected and wouldn't be alarmed by the sight of a stranger at their back window suddenly. Although my back garden isn't accessible from the front so I suppose maybe when it is that's less unusual than I think?

I also thought I could imagine a time I don't answer the door because of cooking. Eg if I was mid chopping raw chicken it would be unhygienic not to properly wash my hands first and our delivery people never want around for long enough for that!

However, your update made it clear you just couldn't be bothered, which is unreasonable when he has a job to do and you ordered a delivery! And your main complaint is that you were caught out. That's a really bad attitude.

It's a difficult situation for delivery drivers. I know loads of people who have had parcels stolen when left at the front so I wouldn't want them to do that. I also don't think packages should be left anywhere they could get wet etc. But leaving with a neighbour can be a pain (for both parties) too. We are lucky we have a porch we can leave unlocked in the day so our deliveries all go there if we are out or don't get to the door in the split second the drivers wait (although it still annoys me if they don't at least ring the bell so I know it's there) but I'm not sure what I'd want them to do if we didn't have that.

mrsjg · 13/09/2023 06:59

Surely this is a wind up.

Nobody behaves like this in real life do they .... and then posts about it on the internet.

Simplelobsterhat · 13/09/2023 07:01

And I don't think I've ever needed a passcode for anything expensive? But I wouldn't want something cheap stolen either!

WaltzingWaters · 13/09/2023 07:02

You’re being hugely unreasonable.

YOU ordered something you wanted delivered. He delivered it for you. You couldn’t be arsed to open the door for the delivery, something that would have taken you 10 seconds. He tried to deliver it safely another way. He’d have been the one in trouble if he left it at your front door and it got stolen before you retrieved it.

Buy your toothpaste at the supermarket next time.

Againstmachine · 13/09/2023 07:06

If you order something at least have decency to answer door when they come to deliver.

BygoneDays · 13/09/2023 07:07

What a scumbag. He is probably a voyeur. Make a complaint to Amazon and see if you can get him sacked.

Skodacool · 13/09/2023 07:08

I’ve never known a delivery person ask for a passcode. OP is very rude.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/09/2023 07:22

@Skodacool i ordered groceries from Uber Eats for the first time yesterday (don’t judge, we both have Covid!) and I had to give a PIN to the delivery driver. I’d never done that before either!

SurprisedWithAHorse · 13/09/2023 07:24

The MNers who never answer the door always say they make an exception for deliveries because they know they're expecting those. Is this the reality?

mustardrarebit · 13/09/2023 07:29

How big is your house that you couldn't be arsed to walk to the front door?!
