It makes my blood boil! They drive their big childcrushers whilst on the phone, they tailgate other smaller cars, they use enormous amounts of petrol, they block up roads, they look threatening...how can people choose to drive something like that? Do they have ha a selfish gene, do they think they are just better than other people so rules don't apply to them, or are they just thick?

(NOTE this is only about town drivers, i appreciate that they are useful in the countryside).

Sometimes, I think Jeremy Clarkson is winning.

because she was a bit of a twit, sugar, who thought she looked cool in her 4x4 and was using the space thing as her excuse for needing one.

Upwind · 03/03/2008 20:07

They are usually driven badly because the owners think driving a 4x4 makes them look cool and gives them extra status so is worth the extra danger to other road users. No surprise that they are inconsiderate drivers, and fondly imagine that the people beeping at them are jealous.

Or they are driven by incompetent drivers, who need to be in a tank to feel safe.

bookwormmum · 03/03/2008 20:07

Well perhaps it was his ego he was transporting around then or his assistant was pretty large. I wasn't going to argue with his mode of transport when he'd got up early to collect me from a garage and give me a lift to uni .

AitchTwoOh · 03/03/2008 20:07

ingles, have you thought about getting a volvo estate? they're getting a very good write-up here...

SugarSkyHigh · 03/03/2008 20:07

btw volvo estate can safely carry 7.
who says having more than 3 DC means automatic 4X4?

AitchTwoOh · 03/03/2008 20:09

wasn't there another show, the secret life of a 4x4 or something, wehre the guy said exactly that, that he loved it because it was so big he could do whatever he wanted on the road because no-one would dare stop him. he was a pretty ordinary dad on the pavement, and extraordinary arsehole behind the wheel.

redrobin · 03/03/2008 20:09

well, hercules, I think that choosing a 4x4 says something about your values. so yes, I guess i would make a judgement, if I saw you getting out of your car.

OP posts:
hercules1 · 03/03/2008 20:09

so therefore all people who drive them must have exactly the same personalities....

SugarSkyHigh · 03/03/2008 20:10

yes! i saw that. he was an utter prat. it was the same show with the nudey cyclists lol. Imagine him driving starkers

hercules1 · 03/03/2008 20:10

well, roundrobin, if that is the sort of person you are then I repeat I really couldnt care less what you thought of me.

liath · 03/03/2008 20:10

Our volvo estate carries 5 it's the XC90 that carries 7 - it's a tank!

ingles2 · 03/03/2008 20:10

tbh I don't really care what car I drive as long as it can do about 500 miles a week, carry ten ton of kit, and get out of my dirt track in the rain, sleet or snow with 2 dc's safely!

AitchTwoOh · 03/03/2008 20:10

so why do you drive it, hercules? what was the decision-making process for you?

i like it

i want it

i don't care what anyone else thinks.

Tutter · 03/03/2008 20:11

i now drive a 4x4 and drive like an old lady

in the past i have had teeny cars (eg peugeot 205) and silly sports cars (eg audi tt)

i guarantee you i am a safer driver now

SugarSkyHigh · 03/03/2008 20:11

liath our V. Estate carries 7

redrobin · 03/03/2008 20:11

no, not at all, but maybe there is a common lack of consideration for other people/the planet.

OP posts:
pedilia · 03/03/2008 20:11

Some people carriers on the road are the same size if not bigger than some 4x4's

Tutter · 03/03/2008 20:11

but yes aitch, that's pretty much what my decisison making process was

Upwind · 03/03/2008 20:12

Bah, why drive a volvo estate when you could drive the dc to school in a WARRIOR

and make everyone think you are a dead glam yummy mummy

liath · 03/03/2008 20:12

In answer to the OP, I drive in Edinburgh and yes there are a lot of 4x4s around now but I have more of an issue with the wankers in transit vans and that stupid woman in a sports car who thought it was a good idea to overtake me on a residential road near a school on friday......

AitchTwoOh · 03/03/2008 20:12

you go girl.

hercules1 · 03/03/2008 20:13

Actually it wasnt my choice at all. We originally bought a people carr thier then for various reasons had to take it back to the dealers and as we couldnt get our money back had to swap it for something else big enough to take our family and 3 huge dogs and it was the only one suitable at the dealers.
It is also very old and ancient.

But hey, judge away.

SugarSkyHigh · 03/03/2008 20:13

someone i know drives a 4X but won't own a tumble-drier
which is worse, environment-wise?

bookwormmum · 03/03/2008 20:13

Here

pedilia · 03/03/2008 20:13

RR- why no consideration for the planet?
Many 4x4's have a smaller engine than other cars.
So what of the BMW driver who drives a car with a 5.0L engine and drives like a twat!
