It makes my blood boil! They drive their big childcrushers whilst on the phone, they tailgate other smaller cars, they use enormous amounts of petrol, they block up roads, they look threatening...how can people choose to drive something like that? Do they have ha a selfish gene, do they think they are just better than other people so rules don't apply to them, or are they just thick?

(NOTE this is only about town drivers, i appreciate that they are useful in the countryside).

Sometimes, I think Jeremy Clarkson is winning.

Quad - Hardly missed the point - OP is "AIBU to think that 4x4 drivers are the most selfish w@&(&s ever???" categorising at its best.

Quadrophenia · 04/03/2008 16:35

but nicecupofwine most 4 x4 drivers are selfish, this thread has proved that.

Quadrophenia · 04/03/2008 16:35

and many freely admit to not caring.

totalmisfit · 04/03/2008 16:38

i'd really like to know why people who live in towns and cities think they need 4x4's. obviously anyone who has a disabled passenger and needs room for their equipment or actually goes off-road regularly has a reason to own one of these things, but everyone else, what's your excuse? i'm genuinely curious.

redadmiral · 04/03/2008 16:43

Think fillyjonk has summed up the not very compelling reasons that heve been supplied a few pages earlier....

handlemecarefully · 04/03/2008 16:45

"and an unattractive showy-off-ness" - this particular argument is a bit silly and fallacious.

Often (some, not all) 4x4's have a high spec and luxury interiors - perhaps their owners merely enjoy the ride and are not throughly obsessed with lording it over other people? Why would people interpret it as ostentatiousness?

Mad.

People are far too preoccupied about status issues - particularly, dare I say those who have insecurities /the self perception that they don't have any ('status' that is)

Nicecupofwine · 04/03/2008 16:45

A couple of posters have defended their choice in a defensive way, but when we are being verbally attacked arguments will become heated. Why generalise in the first instance? We could start a thread "AIBU to hate people who eat/smoke/talk on a handsfree mobile". All of those distractions can cause accidents to children at school gates but are they being vilified?

AitchTwoOh · 04/03/2008 16:52

LOLOLOL hmc, nice try. the insecure defence. love it.

Rhubarb · 04/03/2008 16:54

nicecupofwine - on the contrary, it is me who has been called a twat by musicgirl.

I find it amusing that people can get so heated about a lump of metal on wheels. I seriously don't care what anyone drives, I just think 4x4s are, on the whole, unnecessary and I can see why the drivers of these vehicles get their bad reputation.

However I'm not likely to ever accost anyone for driving one. My biggest offence are my thoughts whenever I see one parked outside my house, or dd's school, or in the M&B section of Asda or wherever. And as you don't know what those thoughts are, you can't say that I'm calling anyone names.

I shall accept your gracious apology musicgirl and forgive you accordingly.

redrobin · 04/03/2008 16:55

nicecup - will start on smokers/eaters/talkers in due course!

mrsruffallo · 04/03/2008 17:00

Why do the materialistic 4 x 4 drivers think people are jealous of them?
I do feel insecure when they are driving alongside me eating/ drinking and talking on their mobiles, yes

Youcannotbeserious · 04/03/2008 17:03

Hey, Rhubarb... I agree...

I have similar thought if I see clapped out cars anywhere near my house, DSDs school or in Waitrose (not that I go much, of course, I have it delivered by Ocado!)

I don't go to Asda at all.

musicgirl · 04/03/2008 17:03

Rhubarb - why would I apologise to you. For calling a spade a spade?

Quadrophenia · 04/03/2008 17:04

I am not in the slightest concerned about status, why would i be?

redadmiral · 04/03/2008 17:05

hmc - you don't think they are status symbols?

Maybe not - I'm just saying that they symbolise rather unattractive qualities. Interesting that you only commented on the show-off one I mentioned. Hard to argue with the fact that they symbolise an inconsiderate attitude to others re safety and our mutual future.

Also, it's not for you to say what others think of them. They may just be a comfortable ride, but they now have their own connotations, whether the drivers like it or not.

Rhubarb · 04/03/2008 17:06

Well in the absence of an apology musicgirl, I forgive you anyway! That's what you get for calling a catholic girl a twat for daring to disagree with you or mistakenly thinking you drive a 4x4. Very clumsy of me btw that, I should have known better, you obviously drive a Hummer!

musicgirl · 04/03/2008 17:11

At least I'm not a volvo driver - but that's a whole other thread.

Rhubarb · 04/03/2008 17:12

Me neither - there you are! Something we have in common!

redrobin · 04/03/2008 17:14

i suspect ALL you have in common!

OP posts:
musicgirl · 04/03/2008 17:14

I don't know, Rhubarb might be good looking with big boobs as well.

Rhubarb · 04/03/2008 17:15

We both have an 'r' and a 'u' in our Mumsnet names!

Rhubarb · 04/03/2008 17:19

Not only am I good looking, but my boobs are still pert!

Quadrophenia · 04/03/2008 17:20

Rhubarb you really should get yourself a 4 x 4 to go with those pert boobs

musicgirl · 04/03/2008 17:20

Not bad for a 60 year old

redrobin · 04/03/2008 17:21
