It makes my blood boil! They drive their big childcrushers whilst on the phone, they tailgate other smaller cars, they use enormous amounts of petrol, they block up roads, they look threatening...how can people choose to drive something like that? Do they have ha a selfish gene, do they think they are just better than other people so rules don't apply to them, or are they just thick?

(NOTE this is only about town drivers, i appreciate that they are useful in the countryside).

Sometimes, I think Jeremy Clarkson is winning.

hi youcannotbeserious

aha! there you go! i did think there were more fuckwit families like us. hahaha
off to workship at the altar of mammon

Nicecupofwine · 04/03/2008 09:08

I wonder if a survey was done re pedestrians knocked down/over/died by which make vehicle? When that can be proven or otherwise then I will change my 4x4 to a smaller car. Think you may find us "fuckwits" are not the biggest fiends of roadrage afterall. Get your facts straight with evidence before condeming us all and tarring us with the same brush. I know many shitty drivers in small cars who hog the road, drive carelessly and smoke at the wheel. Do not get me started. Now off I go to do the school run in my 4x4 as I have no other car to get my kids to the school (3 miles away).

Fillyjonk · 04/03/2008 09:09

what, there is only one garage near you, lardy?

did you try online?

Fillyjonk · 04/03/2008 09:11

and re "anyone who lives XXXXXXX is a pikey... "

no, thinking that people shouldn't drive huge, dangeoros cars is NOT the same as racism, actually.

peacelily · 04/03/2008 09:11

To the OP I have to say IME YANBU I too as a city dweller have found them selfish, irresposible and generally s**t drivers. I can honestly say hand on heart where I live (semi-affluent suburb) I've never had run ins with any other type of vehicle/driver.

That's not to say ther aren't v considerate 4x4 drivers out there too

But the argument that people need them for space etc etc is just b***s!! They ARE a menace round here especially outside the schools in the morning.

I have to park on the road outside my house as do all the other residents, now everyone near to us knows we have a dc (18m now) and I always get a space near my house . Until....some silly cow goes and parks her monstrosity outside my gate ON DOUBLE YELLOWS blocking the light from coming in, she lives about 20 doors down ffs!! And she doesn't use it, it sits there for WEEKS at a time.

I know some people think they're indication of wealth and class status and so use them to broadcast it to the world. Have to say round here though they're v footballers wives, v chav and generally considered a bit sad

Upwind · 04/03/2008 09:14

Nicecupofwine - there are lots of studies. Pedestrians are at least twice as likely to die if hit by a 4x4. Other drivers and cyclists are also much more likely to be killed in an accident involving them.

That is why people have such contempt for the spivs who drive them.

idlingabout · 04/03/2008 09:18

Totally agree with Desiderata and NMC 's recent posts regarding lack of consideration for pedestrians on wet days. Drivers of really large cars just don't seem to realise that they create an extra large 'slosh' of puddle all over any passing pedestrian. This is increased further by the fact that the majority of the time they are exceeding the speed limit. The worst offenders though are the white vans and the lorries - the bigger the vehicle, the worse the effect.

Rhubarb · 04/03/2008 09:20

They are not necessary.

What did people do before they had 4x4s?

They are just a status symbol now. People like the feeling of driving higher up, they can see further and therefore it makes them safer. If they are involved in a crash, they and their children will probably be ok, however should they crash into a car, the car occupants would be crushed.

It's that arseholiness of thinking "well we can afford to make ourselves and our kids safer than yours, so even if it might be at your expense, our kids are more important than anyone else's".

Here is a reminder of how much damage a 4x4 can do. Anyone owning a 4x4 should be forced to watch this video.

OK, KM... Odd argument there.....

Lemme see if I got that: If you intend to break the law and act like an utter gobshite by being drunk while driving, it is more acceptable to do so while driving a little car???????

Call me weird and judge me all you like, but I think it's unacceptable to drink and drive REGARDLESS of the car you drive.

Watch the vid.

Youcannotbeserious · 04/03/2008 09:42

And MY point is that if he hadn't been so bloody drunk that he passed out, there wouldn't have been any accident in the first place...

Quid Pro Quo: It's not the CARS that cause accidents, it's the people driving them!

Upwind · 04/03/2008 09:43

It is unacceptable to be drunk while driving because you pose an increased danger to other road users.

4x4s also pose an increased danger to other road users, so how is it acceptable to drive them in urban areas without good reason?

Youcannotbeserious · 04/03/2008 09:47

Drink driving = Illegal.

4x4 = Perfectly legal...

And, THAT'S why it's acceptable to drive them.

you have confused being legal with being acceptable

it is perfectly possible to behave in an unacceptable or indecent way without becoming a criminal

thelittlestbadger · 04/03/2008 09:54

Haven't read the whole thread so this has probably already been said but many proper 4x4s (landys etc) have been converted to LPG so are I think better environmentally than most other cars esp diesels.

The main problems I find living in north london come from the status cars (porsches BMWs and Mercs) which usually seem to be driven by arrogant twunts whether or not they are also 4x4s. Glad we're getting a volvo estate

OK, whatever....

I refuse to get into an argument that even TRIES to liken drunk driving with the use of 4x4s.

she didn't make that comparison, stop pretending to be stupid so you can score cheap points.
she's saying that you are choosing a car that in an accident (just an accident, probably not even caused by you, cos you are great) your car will wipe out another car more easily. seriously, if that's the sort of thing you can live with on your conscience, fine, what you're doing isn't illegal. but that's why lots of people think 4x4 drivers make the world a worse place to be. because it'll never be enough...

Have to say very interesting video. I think that is an advert for buying a 4 x 4.

I would not want myself or my family to be in that Honda Civic.

In a realistic world we want to protect our families as much as possible, if we're honest we don't take into consideration the safety of others whilst buying a car. If that were a real accident I would want to be in the car that comes off the best, whatever the make.

It would be good to see the reverse, Honda going 60mph crashing into Landrover at 30 mph just to see the contrast.

I own a landrover but we are in the process of buying a mini which we will use to zip about town, easliy parked, low emissions and low tax (mini one, sidewalk, convertible) but I am more than happy after seeing this video to keep my ML 4 x 4 to use on the motorway where there are even bigger vehicles to take into consideration when having a crash.
