Global Warming Being Referred to as ‘lovely weather’

What’s that all about, then?

Climate change is fiendishly complex to resolve and will rely on innovation and global cooperation. The world is so divided I find it hard to imagine this happening. Ultimately I can see us resorting to solar geo engineering solutions where we pump particles into the atmosphere to cool the planet, we will have no choice. In the meantime, at most you can make a tiny bit of difference so we may as well enjoy the nice weather and not spend our lives in a constant state of anger/ gloom.

Are they? I can’t see how they’re mutually exclusive.

Then maybe you should, as the kids say, educate yourself. If you are going to make comments attempting to mock other people for supposedly being stupid, don't do so from a position of extreme ignorance.

2X4B523P · 10/09/2023 11:39

Reminds me of the pandemic and that no one was allowed to enjoy themselves. Sitting on a bench could kill someone! Perhaps we could have a weekly clap for the climate?

Then you need to educate yourself better.

Clapping is too mundane. Pots and pans would better.

Haha at weekly clap

Not at all unusual. 12 years again when DS was born we had a heatwave mid October for a week.

I remember this! My DS was a newborn and the first weekend of October we went for a day out at alocal shady country park, with plenty of suncream. So odd how it was then darkas we drove home at 5!

Fizbosshoes · 10/09/2023 11:54

EasternStandard · 10/09/2023 11:43

Haha at weekly clap

Surely a weekly wail would be more appropriate since enjoying the hot weather is a bad thing?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/09/2023 12:26

I’m 44 and I always remember, almost every year, being absolutely boiling the first week back at school. Seriously, you need a hobby

I seem to recall that we didn't need to get into winter uniform until half term for exactly that reason (at school in late 60s early 70s).

I just don't think the climate activists have understood that the same prompts that got life's pessimists on board with worrying about climate change won't be the same prompts that will trigger an optimist to lean in to the climate conversation.

They seem to think that if they just turn up the volume on anxiety and doom to increasingly dramatic and shrill peaks they will final push through the optimists threshold for engaging change. The weather is gorgeous and so we should all be very, very worried is a failed and ridiculous tactic to engage people who won't be motivated by anxiety and hopelessness and hyperbolic fear mongering.

Are they all optimists or are some just denialists?

Desecratedcoconut · 10/09/2023 13:03

Pessimists aren't really able to access denial. They worry, ruminate, collect evidence and constantly assess danger. Denial and optimism do go hand in hand.

I don't think optimists are superior being, although they do live longer and it comes with benefits as individuals.

It really isn't that unusual. I remember talk of "Indian summers" decades ago when I was a kid.

Climate charge is real, of course, but not every incident of hot weather is necessarily evidence of it!

It is unusual. These temperatures are unprecedented. Indian summers are usually low 20s not low 30s.

Haha yes it does!

Thementalloadisreal · 10/09/2023 13:20

NBU We’ve had the most 30degree days in Sept on record.
Wildfires across Europe.
The world is literally burning.

Mintine · 10/09/2023 13:40

It’s only the 10th September and it’s already broken two records, the highest ever recorded temperature in summer and the highest record for thus is has also been in September.
we also had the wettest June in record
The biggest wildfires, Europe, Canada China.
yes it’s nice to feel the sun on your face but this is catastrophic if we don’t act we are fucked, I’m not burying my head in the sand.

EditingTheDocx · 10/09/2023 13:42

We've had a very sunless summer. If someone expresses happiness that the sun has poked its head out for a day or two I don't care. I prefer cold weather whether it's caused by global warming or not.

EditingTheDocx · 10/09/2023 13:43

Hot not cold. Definitely not Freudian slip either. Fingers turn purple soon as the clouds come out.

Fifireee · 10/09/2023 07:40

Mumsnet has very little interest in climate change. The biggest response to a thread on climate change was the one about what people would refuse to give up for climate change!
Sad
People are desperate to get pregnant, to get help for getting their kids to eat/sleep/health even education but they have very little interested in what the future for these children will look like.
So I’m not surprised they’re voting like they are.
Their children are going to have difficult lives because of their apathy.

There's a Climate Change topic, which is not hugely active, but could be made so, if people were interested and used it

Climate Change

Also, Ethical Living

drunkpeacock · 10/09/2023 15:32

"OK, but a week-long heatwave in the UK in September is unusual to say the least. I don’t think should be lauded."

It really isn't though, it's actually very common for August to be chilly then Early September to be glorious.

I think you can be concerned about climate change and still enjoy particular types of weather. It isn't strictly essential to live your life on woe and horror mode.

A warm week in early Sept is usually nice and sunny, mid 20s. Not 30 degrees for days on end. This is very unusual and has broken records.

BungleandGeorge · 10/09/2023 11:11

It’s not that unusual to get a warmer spell in autumn, the term ‘Indian Summer’ is hardly new

Exactly this. I can remember asking my parents what an 'Indian Summer' was when I was a child - it's hardly something new (I'm in my 60s).

However, I do find people have very short memories when it comes to weather. I'm not in the UK, but we had a long period of milder winters than usual, and still every winter people would say "oh, it's been a very cold winter." Funnily enough, this winter was a more usual cold, frosty, winter and I didn't hear anyone say that.

Wsmi · 10/09/2023 22:30

Get your bamboo toothbrushes at the ready, climate brigade. You have a planet to save.

Fifireee · 11/09/2023 07:17

@Sirzy Thats exactly the kind of response I would expect. Slightly terrifying but mostly pathetic.

Fifireee · 11/09/2023 07:20

@2X4B523P Gosh aren't you hilarious!
Like I said earlier Mumsnet is full of people like you.....!
Pathetic
