Global Warming Being Referred to as ‘lovely weather’

What’s that all about, then?

What was the awful summer about then?

One bad summer in one country does not mean that Global Warming isn't happening.

TaRaRaBoomDeeAy · 10/09/2023 07:57

Look. I genuinely wasn’t looking for an argument but the climate apologists have said I am, so hey, I must be. It was a genuine enquiry. Not sure why people are so fucking defensive about a ‘bit of weather’, eh.

Probably for the same reason why you're so triggered people saying "it's lovely weather"?

Vegetus · 10/09/2023 07:58

MidnightOnceMore · 10/09/2023 07:51

what impact would us all sitting at home weeping and wailing

No one wants anyone to 'weep and wail'.

What adults need to do is make it one of the top criteria for casting a vote. Adults need to call for political action.

Parents who care where their kids go to uni or what vaccines they should have but don't care whether the government acts now on climate change are fiddling while Rome burns. Climate change is, unfortunately, going to completely fuck our kids' futures. Politically we can exert pressure.

No it won't. The doom mongering achieves nothing and compounds those already who don't care to care even less.

Some boffins will engineer out the problem for the simple reason there's trillions at stake.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 10/09/2023 07:58

smilesup · 10/09/2023 07:53

Do people still not need to be told it's climate change. The clue is in the word change. This must have been explained 1000s of times on here.

Well, yes, but surely you're not now arguing that the awful summer in the UK is evidence of climate change?! Summers have been awful for as long as I can remember so there is no change there.

Not a climate apologist thanks😁

HoogahToogah · 10/09/2023 07:57

Yes it has. The hottest ever September day was in 1906 and 35.6 degrees. The difference between the previous September heatwaves and this year's is that this year's has been 1 day longer.

You've just made my point.

Random789 · 10/09/2023 08:01

There is lots that is particularly lovely about sunny September weather. Not just high temperatures but the early morning contrast, cool and golden, often misty, with dews revealing a million cobwebs. Then later in the day the sun stays lower, slanting, and everything seems wonderful in a near-autumn way. There was even a poem about it!!
When people say 'lovely weather', they don't usually mean 'Mmmm, 30 degrees [or whatever climate-change-assisted high is prevailing].' They mean 'Mmmm, warm enough for shorts, golden bright, beautiful.'

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 10/09/2023 08:02

ZadocPDederick · 10/09/2023 07:58

One bad summer in one country does not mean that Global Warming isn't happening.

Of course. And most of us aren't denying climate change at all. It's very evidently happening and it is already causing devastating effects in many parts of the world. But it's absurd when people start to attribute every bit of weather in the UK to climate change as if we never had weather before, and it actually trivialises the very real problem of climate change and makes people take it less seriously.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 10/09/2023 08:03

Fifireee · 10/09/2023 07:40

Mumsnet has very little interest in climate change. The biggest response to a thread on climate change was the one about what people would refuse to give up for climate change!
Sad
People are desperate to get pregnant, to get help for getting their kids to eat/sleep/health even education but they have very little interested in what the future for these children will look like.
So I’m not surprised they’re voting like they are.
Their children are going to have difficult lives because of their apathy.

Mind you don't slip off thaf very high horse. It's a long way down.

SallyWD · 10/09/2023 08:04

TaRaRaBoomDeeAy · 10/09/2023 07:21

Are they? I can’t see how they’re mutually exclusive.

Yes they are. My DH is a professor in climate change and emphasises the difference. Climate change refers to long term changes in the climate. Weather is what you have day to day, hour to hour. When talking about the climate, scientists looks at 30 year stretches. Having said that, it is very likely that climate change has caused our heat waves, floods in Greece etc.
But people can enjoy sunny days, no? We had a miserable cool, cloudy summer and now a week of sunshine and warmth. Can't people enjoy this weather without being berated? My DH spends his life researching and worrying about climate change but he's still enjoyed a week on the beach! He's made the most of every bit of sunshine we've had.

Ascendant15 · 10/09/2023 08:05

TaRaRaBoomDeeAy · 10/09/2023 07:30

Christ. Patronising much? ‘Weather’ does not exist in a vacuum. It reflects the change in climate which is affected by global warming. OK, so ‘global warming’ may be an outdated term, but don’t be disingenuous.

That's rather "pot, kettle, black" isn't it when you started a patronising thread.

There was a week long heatwave about the same time of year last year and in 2019 because I was fortunate enough to have booked lovely cottages those weeks, so I recall them well. I am old enough to recall wonderful summer and poor summers (I didn't notice you complaining about the colder than average summer we have had - around here we had a week that was colder than the average winter day!).

As others have said, it is possible to care about climate change, but even if we could "fix" climate change we will still have weather, and we will still love sunny days. We don't have to live gloomy lives thinking the worst of everything all the time.

But all your responses have been really aggressive and confrontational?

HoogahToogah · 10/09/2023 08:07

smilesup · 10/09/2023 07:59

You've just made my point.

No I haven't. You asked when has it ever been this hot. I've advised you of when it has actually been much hotter than the highs we've seen this month. One day extra of heatwave doesn't prove your point, in the same way that if we have one less hot September day next year doesn't mean climate change is reversing.
If this was happening consistently then fine you'd be right.

@SallyWD this is interesting. I've a friend who works on climate science and wanted to ask how he stays mentally positive. It's a tough field just now.

Desecratedcoconut · 10/09/2023 08:07

Only yesterday when dh fired up the bbq for the third time this week, I said listen, "Some of us are trying to be miserable over here - do you mind?" And I commenced the weeping in earnest.

Beezknees · 10/09/2023 08:08

This isn't extreme weather though.

TheBarbieEffect · 10/09/2023 08:08

Oh stop whinging and enjoy the lovely weather. The more of it the better 😊

Papillon23 · 10/09/2023 08:09

I don't disagree that we are starting to see the effects of climate change.

I also don't think there's any point pretending we are unable to enjoy some lovely weather in September - even if that weather may have been made slightly more extreme as a result of climate change.

I tend to think we see the effects of climate change over periods of years rather than days.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 10/09/2023 08:10

And to follow from what @SallyWD said.. we have now entered an El Niño phase (naturally occurring roughly every 5-7yrs). This will exacerbate the effects of climate change this year/next year. So, some of the recent extreme weather may be partially attributed to El Nino as well as longer term climate change. Scientists are also investigating how climate change is impacting El Nino.

randomsabreuse · 10/09/2023 08:10

I feel like the week schools go back is classic heatwave time. Along with the cold spell in October followed by warmer weather on whatever week in November the school's antiquated heating system was finally turned on for the winter...

See also rain starting the day the schools break up.

I'm concerned about climate change but the general gist of this particular pattern is something I remember from 30 years ago...

What I don't remember quite so well is the consistent 2.55-3.05 showers...

TaRaRaBoomDeeAy · 10/09/2023 07:24

OK, but a week-long heatwave in the UK in September is unusual to say the least. I don’t think should be lauded.

Well I can’t help it, it’s been a godsend. My mental health and wellbeing have been so much better because of the weather this week.

It's not unusual to be this hot at this time. I remember that, when my kids went back to primary school, it was hot. They're 23 and 18 now and I used to feel sorry for them having to go back to school in 'winter' uniform. It's not a new thing.

But I don't think it is that unusual in the U.K.
I certainly remember having hot weather in September growing up. Back then in was often referred to as an 'Indian Sumner' and often tied in with the start of school or just after.

Agreed I remember Indian summers being talked about in early 2000s

If you think the solution is for the boffins to engineer us out, then the rational thing is to have it on your personal political priority list.

If trillions are at stake, it'll seriously affect our kids' futures, so we need to just apply normal political pressure so the boffins get funded.
