The Titanic

I have a soft spot about the titanic. I think everyone has that one disaster that gets them emotional and that is mine. I’ve done a lot of research about it and I am fed up of seeing people make jokes or referencing it in such a casual way.

The latest, a woman on TikTok who does photography with her children and poses them as Jack and Rose from the movie in water and added fake frost. Regardless of the characters being fictional, it’s still a real story and people were freezing to death and drowning and this woman thought it would make a cute photo to replicate that?!

Theres a song that says ‘going down like the titanic’ but could you imagine if someone said ‘going down like the world trade centre’ in a pop song? There’d be uproar.

AIBU to be sick of people forgetting that it wasn’t just a film and that 1500 people actually died in a horrific disaster and making jokes about it is disgusting?

I remember going to watch the film at the cinema when it came out. The amount of teenage girls crying because of Jack a fictional character dieing. No thought about the real life people who did lose their lives was ridiculous.

You’d hope not as the people on the titanic died because of an accident, where as those who died in the WTC were ‘murdered’? As an example, no one will probably ever write a lyric relating to the holocaust in a pop song.

WTC and Holocaust are not comparable

Fallingthroughclouds · 09/09/2023 13:09

There are already jokes about the world trades centre. I watched SNL once and the disgusting things that were said/joked about Pete Davidson's father, a firefighter who died in the blaze, when Pete was a kid, were truly horrific and very upsetting. I have a dark sense of humour, but I was shocked.

zingally · 09/09/2023 13:11

I don't think the Titanic and the WTC are in any way comparable.

One happened over 100 years ago, so there is no-one alive now with a lived experience of it. Whereas the WTC was just over 20. A large percentage of the population remember that day very clearly.

Also, one was a deliberate act of mass murder, and the other was just a terrible accident.

HoneyPotts · 09/09/2023 13:16

Maybe it’s just too soon to start joking about the Titanic?

Tragedy + time = comedy

I have no doubt in another 100 years there will be jokes and songs about the world trade center. And virtual reality comedy tours or whatever is invented by then.

And sometimes you don’t even need that much time. It amazes me that the (excellent!) film The Producers was made in the late 1960s, so just over 20 years after WW2 finished. Springtime for Hitler anyone?

Presil · 09/09/2023 13:25

People were a lot less reverential about WWII in the decades soon after it ended than they are now. They also talked less about it in general.

And hardly anyone talked about the Titanic! Until Cameron made his film.

Does everyone really have a favourite disaster?

Some people have questionable tastes - some people even wrote a “comedy” tv show about the resistance and Gestapo in WW2 France. It was unaccountably very popular.
YANBU to be upset, but this is unlikely to change.

Do you mean 'Allo 'Allo? It was popular because it took the piss out of every nationality involved - the Germans, the French, the British, the Italians. It's incredibly popular in Germany.

UpperLowerMiddleClass · 09/09/2023 13:32

@Newrumpus ‘The intense humming of evil’ came straight to my mind reading this thread

nongnangning · 09/09/2023 13:34

The Plague is a kids nursery rhyme ...
Ring a ring a roses (the bubos)
A pocket full of posies (to ward off the germ and mask the smell of corpses
Attisho, attishoo (made you sneeze)
We all fall down (dead)

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 09/09/2023 13:35

This thread has made me think of those awful lyrics "I'm as serious as cancer, when I say rhythm is a dancer". Makes me feel angry every time I hear it.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 09/09/2023 13:37

There was a titanic exhibit in Vegas when I was there. I was expecting the worst regarding tacky stuff, and was really surprised to find it really good. They had the biggest part of the Hull ever raised to the surface, loads of recreated parts of the ship.

Quite tastefully done, well right up until they offer for us to pose and they the our photo like they do at many American tourist attractions, except one of the options was to be photoshopped onto the bow of the ship, underwater, with the ghost of the dead captain behind us!!

Funnily enough, we declined!

FourFourOne · 09/09/2023 13:37

I find it very odd to have a “soft spot” for a disaster where so many died. Is this really a thing??

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 09/09/2023 13:38

😂'soft spot' indeed! Oh my god, this place at times.... 😂 😂

pictoosh · 09/09/2023 13:38

Gosh. There will be flippant references to the WTC in 100 years I'm sure. Try not to let it bother you.

Hopingforagreatescape · 09/09/2023 13:39

I'm not sure people will ever be jokey or flippant about the World Trade Centre. The difference is that the Titanic disaster was an accident, but the World Trade Centre was a deliberate, awful thing done by people who enjoyed the pain they put other people through.

They will. It’s trickling in already.

feellikeanalien · 09/09/2023 13:44

There are always sick jokes made about tragedies and disasters. I remember at the time of the Brighton bombing some jokes which were in very poor taste.

notlucreziaborgia · 09/09/2023 13:44

I remember hearing jokes within days of the WTC tbf.

KimberleyClark · 09/09/2023 13:44

The Iolaire disaster was as tragic as the Titanic. HMV Iolaire sank at the entrance to Stornoway Harbour on 1 January 1919. It was full of soldiers returning to the Isle of Lewis from the War. At least 201 men of the 283 on board were lost. Imagine surviving the trenches and then drowning within sight of home.

RosaMoline · 09/09/2023 13:46

I totally get you. I get very angry and upset about tragedies and injustices from the past.
I am very passionate about certain causes too. The Thompson and Bywaters case from 1923. A stain on British justice. I was also appalled to find out that a waxwork of Ruth Ellis is in the newly reopened Chamber of Horrors in Madam Tussauds. She’s hardly in the same league as Christie, George Joseph Smith and so on. Sorry to go off on a tangent.

Rotterdam · 09/09/2023 13:48

YANBU

It’s tasteless to dress your kids up to represent people drowning in freezing conditions, whether Titanic or other disasters.

Oh come on, The Fallen Madonna with the big boobies is never not funny 🤷

The dubbing in my country was genious luckily so jokes did not get lost (some imho improved). Genious comedy
