Or was I impatient?

The bus turned up almost 30 minutes late tonight. Buses are usually every 30 minutes. I was hot and had a really troublesome day at work as well as being ill.

The second stop into the journey a woman got on. Her card was declined twice and the driver asked if she had any others. She didn't seem to and decided to phone her husband (maybe to transfer her some money onto the card?)

The bus driver wouldn't move until she paid and she was messing around for 5 minutes. I eventually lent over to her and asked if she could please get the next bus as the bus was already late. She refused saying that she had waited for that bus and eventually a kind man came and paid her fare.

It got me wondering if I was inpatient or was I justified in asking her to get off? I just saw an entitled madam who didn't give a shit at holding up other people.

It was the bus driver's decision.

If he/she felt that the transaction was taking too long then the passenger would have been told to move on.

Modus Operandi Latin for habitual behaviour. Like a killer who always strangled his victims, it's his MO.

boymama82 · 06/09/2023 21:42

I don't think you were unreasonable if it helps, she should have just got off!

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea thank you.

If it's any consolation @SpeedbirdSquawker your responses have shown an insight into your thought processes and reflection and learning empathy. So you may have had a shitty journey in the bus but you've had a positive empathy journey so perhaps take that as your lesson and stop beating yourself up.

goingtotown · 06/09/2023 21:50

OP I hope you're never in the same situation, no actually I do.

Her card obviously wasn't going through though so the other option was for her to get cash out. She seemed to think a miracle was about to happen and she was doing nothing to speed the situation up.

Perhaps she didn't have any cash to get out ?

How do you know she had cash? Coming off very grumpy to me!

Emz6103 · 06/09/2023 22:20

So the lady who got on the already late bus with no money, holds everyone up for five minutes, then calls home for a bank transfer expects everyone on the bus to wait untill she received the money or pay for her fare has no regard for anyone pickimg up children, late for appointment, meeting friends, or having to get home and rather than getting off expects everyone to wait .....she's not entitled it OP for being miffed ? Very petty comment

LadyChilli · 06/09/2023 22:53

I think most if not all of us have felt impatient in similar circumstances though generally people would not express it so directly. The beautiful thing is it only takes one person to react well and help out, as someone did, and the situation will be resolved. You didn't react well and seem to be owning that so don't beat yourself up. We all learn and grow. Maybe next time you'll be the one to help out, if not by paying the fare then by giving a sympathetic smile or defending the person if someone else has a go. Learn from it and move on.

Maddy70 · 06/09/2023 22:58

Dinojump · 06/09/2023 19:53

You could have offered to pay if you were that bothered.

Everyone is hot and bothered at the moment so I'll assume that's why you were so grumpy.

This. Don't need that person that makes someone else's day a little bit worse

Whattodo112222 · 06/09/2023 23:02

I would've offered to pay. Doesn't hurt to show a bit of empathy every now and then. I'm a big believer in pay it forward.
But at least you've reflected on your actions.

undermine · 06/09/2023 23:25

M4J4 · 06/09/2023 21:33

Exactly. In the real world nobody would be happy waiting for a random woman to receive a bank transfer to pay for her bus.

In the real world it takes seconds for a bank transfer to credit. Takes significantly longer to go to a cash point. You’ve likely come across people in front of you bank transferring and haven’t noticed! I transfer money from savings to current all the time.

MyGardensAMess · 06/09/2023 23:37

I think the woman was unreasonable to expect the bus to wait around for phone calls and transfers. That's pretty inconsiderate.

I think your reaction was also unreasonable though. It's up to the driver to handle these situations. I'd assume that the woman was maybe having money troubles if she was struggling over a bus fare. If I had my wits about me I'd probably pay it for her this once.

I have a family member who does this. We got out and for a few pounds we all have to stand around while they log into their app, do the transfer, then pay. If they would just keep a small amount in their functional account, they could just take seconds like the rest of us. It's so annoying.

I mean it’s something that can definitely be done in advance to avoid that but if your relative is tech savvy it shouldn’t take long regardless!

It's not long but it's still an unnecessary extra standing around. We all just tap straight through, then instead of walking on stand around on the other side waiting for them. We've asked them to knock it off and make sure they have something in their functional account ahead of events now, so hopefully that will sort it out.

Maybe the woman on the bus was just caught out unexpectedly with less money than she thought she had. Hopefully this sort of thing is not her regular approach.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 06/09/2023 23:52

Everyone was an arsehole in this scenario - the passenger for having the audacity to hold everyone up (you would never get away with holding up a train or plane in this way), the driver for making the decision to hold everyone up, and maybe you for saying anything instead of sitting there seething like everyone else will be doing.
But the passenger was the worst one for making her issue everyone else's.

Saoirse82 · 06/09/2023 23:57

SnowflakeCity · 06/09/2023 20:25

I think little things like paying for someone's bus fare when shit goes wrong restores people's faith in humanity. Things like berating people for their card not working are part of that little things that destroy peoples faith in humanity. Next time I would just stop and think about which side you want to be on.

Very much this.

You'd remember someone being so awful to you but hopefully the kind man helped to cancel out your shitty behaviour.

You're right, you do lack empathy.

Not the bus company for failing to run their services on time?

This woman shouldn't have even been on the same bus as OP. She certainly didn't cancel the previous bus herself. Every passenger was already significantly delayed by circumstances beyond their control.

Fair enough if you want to be angry at people because their original MOP failed. But if it's not alright for her to shilly shally for a few minutes, it's definitely not alright to keep every single passenger waiting for half an hour.

Hawkins0009 · 07/09/2023 02:19

The bus would hardly get there any faster overal @SpeedbirdSquawker

theGooHasGone · 07/09/2023 03:06

You're not unreasonable OP, it'd have fucked me off too. Her lack of planning held up an already late bus full of people. Totally suspect it was deliberate theatrics to get a free fare out of someone.

Sounds infuriating. Why should her faffing make everyone even more late?!
