Name changed for this.
Started a new part time job 3 weeks ago. Great hours which suit me in a tiny family run business.
However...
No lying time and paid weekly, but I've still not had any wages, should get them soon, apparently the accountant is a bit slow.
Entitled to a break, but we don't get one.
The owner doesn't give contracts.
Wage slips (not that I've had one yet) are infrequent, sometimes a few months late.
And absolute sweatshop, literally can go all shift without a pee.
Allowed to bring in a bottle of water, no snack, no cuppa, nothing.
I'm absolutely fucked after each shift, but the other 2 members of staff accept it as their lot and say that's just how it is and I should be glad of the job.
Should I suck it up and become indoctrinated into their way of thinking, or as I really want to do, spin on my heel after telling them to shove it? Which would be soooo easy, especially as I've no contract.

Why do you even have to ask?

mbosnz · 06/09/2023 18:19

No contract, and not been paid, when it's supposed to be weekly? I wonder if they're paying the requisite taxes, and employer contributions, or whether they've decided that's discretionary too?

I'd be leaving, and I'd also be raising my concerns with the Tax Department.

tulippa · 06/09/2023 18:20

What's lying time? Sorry couldn't work out the typo. I wouldn't want to work for a company who didn't consider it important to actually pay their employees for their work. And that's before you even get to the working conditions. I would leave if you can afford to.

Get your money before you tell them to stuff it.

NoSquirrels · 06/09/2023 18:21

The accountant is a bit slow, eh?

Yeah, right.

If a business can’t pay its staff on time it is a failing business. Don’t give them any of your time for free - get out ASAP. But get paid first!

Mamette · 06/09/2023 18:21

Just walk as soon as you get paid

Nellieinthebarn · 06/09/2023 18:22

You should leave and report the working conditions to the Health and Safety executive, and the wage issues to the Department of Revenue. These working practices are unsafe and illegal.

BusyBees1234 · 06/09/2023 18:23

It will only get worse. Leave

Lying time = overtime I'm guessing

hopeishere · 06/09/2023 18:23

What sort of job is it? Can you introduce change - being in a kettle and take a break? So they see it can be done?

Knackeredandpissedoff · 06/09/2023 18:24

Lying time=working the first week in advance before getting paid.

OP posts:
saltinesandcoffeecups · 06/09/2023 18:24

No OP, you should totally stay and work under really crappy conditions without being paid.

Why is this even a question?

greenacrylicpaint · 06/09/2023 18:25

leave
small claims for wages
& phonecall to hmrc

MissMogwai · 06/09/2023 18:26

Absolutely not. You've still not been paid after 3 weeks?! You must be weekly paid if you've done a week in hand, so I'd be worried.

As pp said, leave when you get paid. It won't get better if this is the start!

fairyfluf · 06/09/2023 18:26

Come on. Have some self respect.

Knackeredandpissedoff · 06/09/2023 18:27

I've asked. Kettle isn't allowed.
And I'm asking because I'm interested in how normal people view the situation before I find out how acceptable the job centre finds it.

If you're on benefits I'd look for another job and get that lined up before leaving this one just so you don't get sanctioned (unless you can contact your work coach and check first)

Knackeredandpissedoff · 06/09/2023 18:39

I've contacted my work coach but haven't heard back.
Oh and the business is closing for a week soon, because one of the other employees has been called for Dury duty, so we're all to take annual leave. It really is a shit show.

OP posts:
Janicepalace · 06/09/2023 18:45

You all have to take your annual leave because someone is on jury duty!? I’ve recently escaped a strange small business and it’s the bonkers made up rules like this that grind you down. If the other people working are happy to just have a job then they’ve probably been gaslighted into thinking so. Leave!

mbosnz · 06/09/2023 18:47

I've worked for some crappy employers before, but I have to say, this one takes the biscuit.

Knackeredandpissedoff · 06/09/2023 18:49

I agree.
It's a tiny business in a tiny village, and apparently there are very few jobs out there, so we've all to be grateful that we're employed there. 🤪
The relief I feel when I escape after each shift...

OP posts:
devildeepbluesea · 06/09/2023 18:49

Fuck that, just leave. Don’t wait for your money either, just submit a tribunal claim for non payment of wages. Chances are if you stay, by the time you get your money they’ll owe you more anyway.

dutysuite · 06/09/2023 18:53

No way, life is too short to put up with that.

Georgyporky · 06/09/2023 18:59

"Lying time" aka "week-in-hand" was back in the old days when a weekly time-sheet could not physically be processed in time to give the employee their wages until next week.

They are lying bastards, & need to be reported to DWP, HMRC, Job Centre - add your own. I'd leave, & take them to the Small Claims Court

HoneyPotts · 06/09/2023 19:01

I’d run for the hills and never look back.
