Name changed for this.
Started a new part time job 3 weeks ago. Great hours which suit me in a tiny family run business.
However...
No lying time and paid weekly, but I've still not had any wages, should get them soon, apparently the accountant is a bit slow.
Entitled to a break, but we don't get one.
The owner doesn't give contracts.
Wage slips (not that I've had one yet) are infrequent, sometimes a few months late.
And absolute sweatshop, literally can go all shift without a pee.
Allowed to bring in a bottle of water, no snack, no cuppa, nothing.
I'm absolutely fucked after each shift, but the other 2 members of staff accept it as their lot and say that's just how it is and I should be glad of the job.
Should I suck it up and become indoctrinated into their way of thinking, or as I really want to do, spin on my heel after telling them to shove it? Which would be soooo easy, especially as I've no contract.

Just say you’ve got d and v if it’s food prep you won’t be allowed in til it’s subsided anyway.

I worked for a total wanker like this, walked in the end but I was a 20yr old student and didn't have any responsibilities or the JC breathing down my neck so it was easier for me He had a horrible attitude towards women as well, basically exclusively employed them as they were easier to intimidate and bully, especially the older ones.

He had one woman on his "line" who couldn't read and write well (the job was practical and didn't require much of it and she avoided any task where her lack of skill would show up). She was old as time and blatantly dyslexic but had been classmates with Chaucer she was that old, so had just been labelled "thick". She had worked for this old arsehole for 35yrs and always said she was so lucky to have the job because she was "so stupid". He exploited that by working her into the ground. Fucker.

But this was 20 odd years ago, I'm sorry this is still a thing happening to you today @Knackeredandpissedoff. Good luck.

I'm not going back.
If the job centre sanction me, so be it. I'll tell them exactly what's been happening and I'll take it further if need be.
I feel like such a mug, but that I was over a barrel.
I'll get an appointment with my work coach ASAP and hopefully get help in retrieving my owed money.
I'm so thankful to you all in listening to my woes.
I'm going to phone them in the morning and say my piece, but I won't be back. Hopefully the job centre won't accept job adverts from them in future, I'd hate to think of anyone else having to put up with their crap.

keep a record of what happened.
including the times when you asked for your contract and pay slips.
if you have written (email/text) evidence even better.

all the best.

Personally I would have gone in today and after 6 hours taken my legal entitlement to a 20 minute break. I'd also have been recording the conversation as evidence.

If the boss complained I'd tell him it was the law. If he sacked me then go back to the Job Centre. Being sacked for standing up for basic legal working rights is not the same as walking out.

But that's me. I'm not a quitter but I will stand up for what is right.

Have you called the place of work? I hope it feels very good to tell them to fuck off. You should be proud. You're very brave in the face of sanctions. I do hope the job centre are on your side here.

Yip. Phoned in and politely said that 3 weeks of no pay was my cut off point. She seemed understanding and wished me well. Maybe she's seen it all before. 1st appointment I can get with work coach is the middle of next week.
