Mumsnet acronyms you misunderstood

Not an AIBU, just posting for something light-hearted. I still read ‘STBXH’ as ‘shithead bastard ex husband’, even though I’ve subsequently worked out it means ‘soon to be ex husband’ 🤦‍♀️ Are there any MN acronyms you’ve misunderstood?

The biscuit is to indicate you're feeding a troll I think

Malapataraso · 04/09/2023 23:04

They are abbreviations or initialisms, not acronyms.

pinkdelight · 04/09/2023 23:14

I never know if BPD is borderline personality disorder or bipolar disorder on here.

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 04/09/2023 23:16

I thought CF meant ‘crap friend’

MsJuniper · 04/09/2023 23:17

megletthesecond · 04/09/2023 22:25

I always read 'STBXH' as 'stupid bastard ex husband'.

Same

HesterLee · 04/09/2023 23:18

At work, FWB means full weight bearing (orthopaedic surgery). Took me a while to work out the MN version!

bluetongue · 04/09/2023 23:20

For some reason I used to think HTH meant ‘hand to hold’ 😂

Years ago a politician was on Mumsnet doing a q&a (might have been Gordon brown) and he was asked what his favourite biscuit was. He thought it was a trap of some kind and refused to answer, so it's short hand for you're being a dick\don't be an idiot.

He didn't refuse to answer the question. MNHQ were feeding specific questions to him during the webchat, so that they could get through as many as possible, and they didn't ask him the biscuit question.

(Although later on he did come back and answer it - sadly I can't remember what his answer was!)

I'm my head STBEX is always stupid bastardi ex.
I don't know why - I can't unsee / unread it.

pinkdelight · 04/09/2023 23:14

I never know if BPD is borderline personality disorder or bipolar disorder on here.

A lot of people don't appear to understand that they aren't interchangeable

BIWI · 04/09/2023 23:25

The one that I always have to think about is GPs - are they talking about their family doctor, their grandparents or - as sometimes has happened - their guinea pigs?

Readingisgoodforyou · 04/09/2023 23:28

I always thought LTB was 'look to breakup' I guess I was on the right lines even if my version doesn't read well!

PinkArt · 04/09/2023 23:28

Despite knowing it's cheeky fucker, my brain still always reads CF as cunty fucker initially!

DiscoBeat · 04/09/2023 23:29

I thought NC meant name change. I did wonder how changing your name would help eg in a toxic MIL situation (at least I knew what MIL meant!)

GalGadont · 04/09/2023 23:30

Malapataraso · 04/09/2023 23:04

They are abbreviations or initialisms, not acronyms.

The meanings of ‘acronym’ include abbreviations and initialisms - those are actually the first given meanings in the OED. It doesn’t just mean things pronounced as a word like NATO or RADA.

I thought CF was cunt face and for some reason I though STBXH was Shit the bed ex husband. God knows why, it doesn’t even make sense. But that’s where my brain went!

🤣

It took me forever to work out what IYSWIM meant. I couldn't work out why all these people were swimming.

QueenMegan · 04/09/2023 23:38

I still don't really understand the DH DD DS business. What if they aren't Dear they are wankers?

Why is OH other husband can't you just say ex.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 04/09/2023 23:39

OH = other half

Theroom · 04/09/2023 23:41

fearfuloffluff · 04/09/2023 22:08

I thought HTH meant 'head for the hills' like another way of saying LTB

I thought it meant Hit the Highway (ie telling the OP they are being annoying and to go away).

MyrrAgain · 04/09/2023 23:41

I don't understand the use for ANY of them. Especially why everyone is so "dear" when, given the majority of posts, they clearly fucking aren't.

Palindrone · 04/09/2023 23:43

When I was trying for my first child, AF was mentioned on tons of the conception threads.

I didn't understand why Any Fucker was involved in so many people's efforts to make a baby.

Then it twigged that AF meant Aunt Flo.

BIWI · 04/09/2023 23:43

They're not compulsory @MyrrAgain Grin

jays · 04/09/2023 23:45

I still read CF it as cunty fucker too, I always thought it was this!

MyrrAgain · 04/09/2023 23:47

BIWI · 04/09/2023 23:43

They're not compulsory @MyrrAgain Grin

I try to avoid using them..but unfortunately I still have to try and make sense of them. I originally thought CF was cunt face. As in CF neighbour, which I thought was a little strongly worded!
