Hi,

Totally appreciate this isn't an iabu but whenever I post anywhere else I get very few responses.

Anyway, looking for help. 9 year old relative, need a birthday present. He is into Pokémon but has everything related. Not in need of clothes. Don't see him read much, little attention span unless it's a screen and not really sporty. Parents say get a 'surprise' but where to start?! Anyone able to recommend gifts that their 9 year old boy loved?

A Polaroid type camera?

A voucher for the cinema?

A good box of American candies?

what’s your budget?

Popsicle42 · 04/09/2023 18:28

Cards against humanity kids version - my 9 yr old finds it absolutely hilarious.

Or one of the more gross versions of science experiment kits - there’s an explosive one where you can make “fart slime” and an erupting volcano.

Something decorative for his room? My 9yo (DD) has those flexible adhesive strips of colour changing LEDs in her room which she loves and are very popular with her peers (both m & f).

Agree we need to know your budget though! DD's aforementioned lights were about £40 from Ikea IIRC, but you can get cheaper ones (they tend to be shorter lengths though).

Get him an easy bake oven. Or something that is traditionally marketed to girls. I guarantee he doesn’t have an easy bake oven.

Thanks everyone, off googling the suggestions so far. Budget about £50ish.

Thank you!

Depending on your budget -

Go Ape voucher
Cinema voucher
Waterstones voucher (or other book one)

sezzer87 · 04/09/2023 18:38

How about tickets to a show or theme park.

Wildlynx · 04/09/2023 18:39

Oysterbabe · 04/09/2023 19:14

mandymion · 04/09/2023 19:16

topshotta · 04/09/2023 20:35

voucher for local indoor trampoline park he can go with a mate?

Tisfortired · 04/09/2023 20:38

I have a 9 year old with a birthday round the corner and his list is;

Nerf gun and bullets
Scooter
Some fancy felt tip pens he’s seen on YouTube that do look fun to use to be honest! Can’t remember the brand name but I’ll get him Some of those and some paper.
Any kind of Lego

Everything else on his list is football related or books so no good to you. He would also appreciate American candy (he’s always on the taste of the states website) or a Game/Argos voucher so he can buy his own games.

Halo8 · 04/09/2023 20:42

A den kit?

EatYourVegetables · 04/09/2023 20:45

Books?

herbygarden · 04/09/2023 20:46

IME boys can never have enough Nerf guns! £50 would buy you a couple of awesome ones!

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 04/09/2023 21:43

Mine would want an ETB - elite trainer box… basically loads more Pokémon cards!

maddening · 04/09/2023 21:46

Pokemon hoody

Card sleeves
Card folder
Deck holder
(you could probably get these 3 for £50

ETB is about £50

gillybean2 · 04/09/2023 21:51

Can never have enough Pokemon cards. Or the mega blocks Pokémon figures are a hit here. Plenty of limited edition Pokemon items too but if you don’t know what he already has may be tricky. What about a steam voucher?

Sweetener12 · 06/09/2023 06:51

A calendar with all of his favorite characters (you can use a collage calendar maker to make a custom design).
Make a photo montage and create a picture of him and his favorite characters, then print it out and frame.
Pokemon related decorations for his room (lava lamp or glowing stickers) maybe?
Edibles are always a good idea, so think of snacks he likes.

Needmorelego · 06/09/2023 07:06

I wouldn't spend 50 quid on a "I hope he likes this" gift.
For a Pokémon fan I would get a couple of packs of the cards plus a large bar of chocolate. A 9 year old will think this is the best gift ever.
If you do want to add a "surprise" buy a paperback copy of a classic children's novel. He will either read it....or won't but at least books can easily be passed on or don't take up much storage space.

DIYandEatCake · 06/09/2023 07:21

My 9 year old also has pretty much everything he needs and random toys from relatives often just get forgotten about (he has very generous relatives). I find the amount of ‘stuff’ my kids have depressing. He does love being given sweets/chocolate - you could make a special treats hamper for him, bottles of different Prime flavours, unusual sweets (American style, Nerds, Millions etc), some chocolate bars.
