Make up

Do you wear make up every day? I do...I know I look better and younger when I wear it and feel so much better. I know so many people who don't wear make up on a daily basis who look stunning when they put make up on to go out. Why wouldn't you want to look the best you can all the time? It doesn't need to take a lot of time...5 mins for basic eye liner..mascara.. blusher and lipstick...I have a friend in her 60s and if we go out she wears lipstick and mascara and looks 20 years younger! I also would wear make up if I'm just at home hanging out with my DP...I want to look my best for him. I find it baffling that people will do their hair and make up to go out with with work colleagues but don't do the same on a daily basis for their partner...

I second @TheOGCCL ’s review of the Romand Lip Stains. Also love their Ash mascara. It’s dark grey and would stay on through a hurricane. (Needs to be removed with oil)

LemonPeonies · 05/09/2023 08:20

I wear make up for me, not for my partner. Plus he prefers me without anyway. I look older when I wear eyeliner etc as most people do. At work I definitely don't bother, only if I'm going out somewhere nice nowadays.

MiniTheMinx · 05/09/2023 08:47

I discovered something odd last year. I belong to a society who put on a public event each year. We all dress up in costumes. I don't wear much make up, and when I have I've always worn very little and kept it natural. Last year I went all out and wore a fairly dramatic night time look. For the first year ever most of the other women were friendly towards me. In the past I'd spent the evening with my husband and a group of guys and none of their wives even so much as smiled at me! I think it boils down to two things.....I look good without make up, and have the confidence and audacity to 'know' it, how dare I be comfortable in my own skin, and secondly I do indeed look older with it, but perhaps most pertinent with it I fit into the club because I signal to others I do indeed have some insecurity and lower self esteem.

It was odd because I'd always assumed the opposite. But mostly it's more to do with the fact I just can't be bothered with make up and wear just enough to look like I've made some effort. So in reality I do care what others think, but probably do look better without it, but will continue to wear just enough to feel "I've made some effort" and somehow wearing more of it seemed to convey to others that I lacked confidence.

We've all noticed those naturally beautiful people who look beautiful without even trying. I'd love to be one of them. But since I'm not, and most of us aren't either I think I'll just settle for acceptance and it seems I'm more acceptable to other women if I wear make up.

fearfuloffluff · 05/09/2023 08:58

I rarely wear it because I can't be arsed and with two small children, I have about 1.5 minutes to get ready in the morning.

Does that help?

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 05/09/2023 09:05

Yes every day, even if I'm just at home. It takes me 5-10 minutes and is just part of my morning routine.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 05/09/2023 09:10

Idgaf if other people choose to wear make up, but for me personally I don't think I look objectively "better" with (or without!) make up on, I just look different. I'm pretty casual in my dress sense, and for me, make up doesn't suit my usual look. If I'm glammed up for a night out I would consider it as it would work with the outfit (albeit at present I think I would only have one ancient dried up eye shadow anyway!).

I think it's probably habit forming. If I'd got used to wearing it I'd be more familiar with how to put it on, so it would be quicker, etc. At which point maybe I'd wear it more often because it was part of the routine if that makes sense. Because it's not part of my routine, the idea of starting something that costs money and means getting up earlier is a no-go 😁

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 05/09/2023 09:55

@MiniTheMinx mate you’re overthinking it. I’m pretty sure no other woman is thinking anything like that about your make up = you have insecurities (or not!) and that makes them friendlier towards you. No offence (and I genuinely mean no offence)but you’re not that important. No one thinks that deeply about another casual acquaintance bc they just simply don’t have time. Everyone has a rich inner life and most other people don’t factor too deeply on that scale.

if the increased friendliness was to do with costume/wearing make up, it was probably just an entry into rapport building.

Casiotoad · 05/09/2023 10:01

I have never worn makeup, I think all makeup looks weird and clownish. My husband agrees so I don’t waste the time and money on it!

MiniTheMinx · 05/09/2023 10:12

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot I agree, no one consciously thinks this way. I'm suggesting it's subconscious. And no I'm not that important, or that beautiful, or that confident. I actually feel more self conscious in make up and hate to draw attention to myself. But I must give off a vibe of not giving two monkeys and being comfortable in my own skin, and I've discovered that other women are less friendly when I wear less make up or none at all. Do you know why? I ask because actually it would be nice to be accepted and make friends.

CoalCraft · 05/09/2023 10:14

I never wear makeup, ever. I didn't even wear it to my wedding. There's nothing wrong with my face as it is.

Dreemhouse · 05/09/2023 10:39

How do those who don’t wear makeup feel about dying their hair/styling their hair, having their nails done/other aesthetic things? Genuine question. A lady I worked with had the most beautiful skin, didn’t wear any makeup at all but would regularly have her nails and hair done. I wonder if there is a difference between doing your own makeup, or having somebody else do your nails and hair which maybe feels more like pampering. I personally love doing makeup but I understand it might not be enjoyable for others. Hate styling my hair!

Well I can only speak for myself, but I don't ever wear makeup and also don't get my nails or hair done, or anything else. I do wash and brush my hair if course, and I trim my nails when required, but that's it. I shave my underarms and bits, and sometimes my legs, for what it's worth.

Comedycook · 05/09/2023 10:58

So you never get your hair cut @CoalCraft ?

yellowsmileyface · 05/09/2023 11:11

@Dreemhouse I get my hair trimmed a few times a year but I don't ever dye it or style it differently. I like being low maintenance and I think the way it falls naturally just happens to suit me best. I do like painting my own nails, so I guess that's my main aesthetic thing that I do.

My reasons for not wearing makeup are not because I believe everyone should be radically natural or because I deem it un-feminist to alter one's appearance, I just find it a chore to put on and I don't like how it feels on my face. I'm also not good at applying it and I don't care enough to invest the time to get good at it.

I do also have tattoos which I guess is another one of my chosen ways to express myself aesthetically. I think maybe what I get from having tattoos is similar to what some people get from decorating their faces, just more permanent.

Never had my nails done or done them. Get my hair cut about twice a year when it gets too long and thick and starts to irritate me.

No skincare other than water running down my face in the shower.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 05/09/2023 11:15

I like wearing make up, so I wear it. My dh doesn't like wearing it so he doesn't, the fact that he doesn't make the effort
to spend 5 minutes each morning to look pretty for me doesn't affect how I feel about him 😉

Mountainhowl · 05/09/2023 11:16

I have no idea how to do makeup well, so I never wear it, I don't own any at all.

When I tried as a teen my foundation would look patchy or flakey, and I generally looked ridiculous. I tried one day to do makeup incl eyes, walked into glass and half the room laughed about it 😂

I'm not bothered, I use a face wash and moisturiser, that'll do!

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 05/09/2023 11:17

I can't stand these threads, it's ends up as a competition as to who is the most low maintenance. You also get the patronising make up free crowd judging those of us who do wear it, making out like anyone who wears a bit of lippy is brainwashed and stupid. Bore off.

Chocolatesandroses · 05/09/2023 11:20

Sometimes I wear make up but I wear it for myself to feel good for myself I’m defiantly not doing it to look good for dh . I wear it when I want if it means at home or out . Some days I can just get my kids to school I really can’t be arsed with putting on make up .

Mountainhowl · 05/09/2023 11:25

Edit button is gone! I walked into class and people laughed, not into glass (I also would have laughed if I'd walked into glass 😂), it was definitely my attempt at make up that got the giggles going, and it was explicitly said too

Not that I think others who wear it look ridiculous at all, I watch the make up reels with amazement, I think they look incredible, I just haven't got a clue and whenever I've tried it looks terrible 😂

But even if you did wear it to look good for your DH there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I've never had my nails done or been for anything like a facial or massage. I even cut my hair at home.

I absolutely hate the idea of sitting in a salon and having someone touching me and playing with my hair or my hands 😂

All I do to my hair is wash it and then tie it up out of my face.

BIossomtoes · 05/09/2023 11:44

Well done @andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow. You’re currently the front runner in the “I don’t give a shit about my appearance” competition. Doubtless someone will be along in a minute claiming they wash their face with a Brillo pad and moisturise with lard.

Haha I actually googled that and apparently "Lard is incredibly gentle on skin and acts as an exceptional barrier for locking in moisture. It has ben proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, tone and firm skin, even out colour and redness associated with rosacea, reduce dryness, improve acne and reduce pore size.". Think I'll give it a miss though.

Although unfortunately brillo pads are apparently a no-no "The Bottom Line: Exfoliation – gently – will create a healthier, better looking outer skin layer (epidermis). Use a gentle scrub, a washcloth, a loofah, etc. But please don't use a BRILLO pad!".

Every day's a school day eh😂

Comedycook · 05/09/2023 11:52

I think it's a bit of a myth that beauty treatments are relaxing and enjoyable. I think most of us find them a chore. I go to the hairdressers but I absolutely hate it. I hate looking a mess more though!
