Police shoot pregnant woman dead (USA)

SuddenlyOld · 02/09/2023 07:35

Ok America, since when did it become normal for police officers to point guns at pregnant women accused of shoplifting?
She didn't have a weapon or get violent. Turns out she hadn't stolen anything either.
If I was black in America I'd be scared to go out 😪😪😪
This is probably the worst thing I've seen ever.

Bodycam video shows Ohio police fatally shooting pregnant black woman

Ta'Kiya Young, 21, appears to advance the car towards an Ohio officer before a single shot is fired.

*Excellent post, ReginaRegina, especially the bit about the full story being conveniently ignored even when more becomes known

Naturally the fuller story on this one will have to wait on the inquiry, but that's not good enough for some so we get armchair verdicts of murder and very obvious agenda-driven claims about the police even in the face of all evidence to the contrary

And I'm honestly not sure who that's supposed to help*

And also armchair verdicts of of "knee jerk, the full story will come out, it's obviously fine, a different opinion is an agenda...."

Yeah right because to be horrified by this incident is to " have an agenda ".

sunglassesonthetable · 03/09/2023 14:42

Exactly - and this is what I meant about the hyperbole really not helping

I tell you what's not helping @Puzzledandpissedoff

The actual video of this women being shot.
Please.

sunglassesonthetable · 03/09/2023 14:45

I'm not convinced it helps anyone. It's not really surprising that some people panic when encountering the police given the number of threads that'll have you believing they'll shoot any POC on sight! It borders on irresponsible at times despite the existence of genuine issues.

People panic when they have a gun aimed at their heads.

The actual root of the panic comes from seeing videos like this.

cakeorwine · 03/09/2023 14:47

They ran in aggressively and did nothing to reassure her or make her feel like a reasonable discussion would take place

This.

Communication . Something that completely failed here

sunglassesonthetable · 03/09/2023 14:48

The worst she was accused of was shoplifting (and it’s not clear that she had even done so) and your reaction is “ohh let’s not exaggerate the threat the police pose”, by highlighting this profound injustice. 😡m

I'm fucking tired of Black people in the midst of criminality doubling down, acting a fucking fool when confronted by the police.....and then being used as examples of Police Gone Awry.
Pregnant, two kids at home and she had her backside in the streets on the Rob all over town with her compadres with no Plan B as to how it's gonna be if she gets hemmed up by the law, aside from run over their claat or die trying?
Nowhere in creation are police obligated to be polite to criminals. Politesse is not the expectation of criminals from the police, only defenders of criminals who are dead whilst mostly doing everything counterintuitive to staying alive when confronted by the law .
At no point in time did this lady think outside of the immediacy. She knew she stole, she knew that the police knew and she chose suicide by cop.
It's sad that her children are orphans and I hope that the chain of degeneracy is broken.
But I will not be manipulated into thinking that there would not have been a better outcome if she had copped to the fact that she was bang to rights, got out of the car and thus be arrested.
Driving at the law will guarantee slow singing and flowers bringing, even in the UK.
Ask Chris Kaba's family.
Advice to prospective criminals: please to value one's life more than a bottle of grog. Better still. If you have children and are/ or pregnant 'tan a yuh yard.
The discography and literature is long and strong to the reality that the Law, wherever it is, beats even the mastermind criminals, much less the dunce bats who seem incapable of thinking into next week.

It’s locked in a spiral. People are afraid of the police so they don’t cooperate with them. The police get aggressive because the person isn’t cooperating. Out come the guns and someone winds up dead. The next person who encounters the police is more afraid and so doesn’t cooperate. And on it goes..

It’s an endless cycle that somehow needs breaking but I don’t know how.

What helps is accepting it, not minimising it, not dismissing it. Not looking for reasons , or why the victim might possibly not be perfect(like going as far to look at the grandparents record). From the police. From the media . From society.

Then there's community outreach programs, more training on mental health issues and de escalation techniques, crisis intervention units. A culture of accountability, a culture of actually "serve and protect" , a culture of seeing people as people and treating them with respect, not like vermin.

Some involve vast amounts of money and resources, some just a will to change things. There have been departments in the USA though that have managed to turn things around.

TrishM80 · 03/09/2023 14:54

It's America. The cops will get away with shooting the black woman but we'll probably get done for killing the unborn child.

Can you please link to any concrete proof that she was a criminal /committing a crime?

Absolutely this!!

Coming out with stuff like this:

"It's sad that her children are orphans and I hope that the chain of degeneracy is broken."

"Nowhere in creation are police obligated to be polite to criminals. Politesse is not the expectation of criminals from the police, only defenders of criminals who are dead whilst mostly doing everything counterintuitive to staying alive when confronted by the law ."

Innocent until proven guilty

Mumof118 · 03/09/2023 15:19

This is so very sad. Even if she had stolen, she didn’t deserve the death penalty, and her poor innocent baby - it’s horrific. I do hope that the police officer is held accountable.

I’ve not gone back to look at all of your time stamps.

I only posted one time stamp.

Your beliefs are your business. And that is part of the problem. You’d really like to believe most of what happens isn’t true or it must be our fault. Whatever helps you sleep at night I guess.

I believe that Ta’Kiya Young and her unborn child died tragic and unnecessary deaths, but whether the police officer is criminally responsible is more difficult to say. I also believe that there is inherent racism within the US police force - but equally a lack of respect on both sides. Nevertheless I still don't believe everything you posted last night.

CallumDansTransitVan · 03/09/2023 15:34

What we see in the bodycam clip likely shows just a tiny segment of what had gone on.
How long had the first officer stood at drivers window been asking her to get out the car?
Had the woman put the vehicle into drive during this period?

The officers at this point are dealing with a 'what if' situation. They have no idea her reason for driving away from uniformed officers. Imagine she drove further or faster and crushed one of them between her car and another. Imagine she accelerates through the car park and runs over a Mother and child. Given the (ridiculous) prevalence of guns in America, they don't know if she is armed.

Also the hyperbole of American officers always beating up or shooting Blacks doesn't stand up to scrutiny. These officers will likely stop to speak to around 5 people a day. If they are out on duty for 200 days a year that is 1000 people for every officer. There would be considerably more incidents if it was true.

How long had the first officer stood at drivers window been asking her to get out the car?

You can see that he goes over, bangs on the window and says "Get out of the car"

You can see this at 1 min 50 into this clip. He goes from another car to her car.

Funny how there was no "what if" if he did shoot.

What if the bullet ricocheted/missed and hurt another person?
What if she lost control of the car (like) she did and hurt someone?

It's because of the risk of collateral damage/ other civilians getting hurt that a lot of police forces advise against shooting at a driver, especially if the car is in motion.

cakeorwine · 03/09/2023 15:46

He could have killed his partner. If he was being lifted up by the car and he fired then, who knows where the bullet could have gone.

I couldn't see the youtube one as it needed a sign in. But I think the below video shows the same as your one. Her first response is 'the other person stole' which she had some knowledge a crime had been commited.
She appears to start driving away while one officer is stood by her door with his hand inside her 3/4 closed window. At this point the officer who shot has no idea of her intentions towards him, his colleague or the wider public.

Skinthin
The worst she was accused of was shoplifting

Not exactly;
Police say the officers haven’t “waived their rights as victims” in this incident and are withholding their identities.
“When Ms. Young drove her car directly at Officer #1, striking him, Officer #1 became a victim of attempted vehicular assault,” police said in a news release.
“When Ms. Young pulled away from Officer #2 while his hand and part of his arm was still in the driver’s side window, Officer #2 became a victim of misdemeanor assault,”

cakeorwine
The original cop just went in full throttle.
Banging on the window - which is going to get someone panicked.

The first bang was more of a tap. When did she start the car engine? I can see why they might start banging if she started the engine.

Fireroselily
They could have easily ran her plates and made a home visit.

Blendon Township Police confirmed that the car didn't have any license plates.

That is entirely true. But the officer had to make a split second decision. We don't know what his forces policy on drawing guns or shooting the driver of a moving car. Or indeed what any of us would do had we been in that officers position.

The lesson here is, if the police tell you to get out the car. Then do as your told.
