Police shoot pregnant woman dead (USA)

SuddenlyOld · 02/09/2023 07:35

Ok America, since when did it become normal for police officers to point guns at pregnant women accused of shoplifting?
She didn't have a weapon or get violent. Turns out she hadn't stolen anything either.
If I was black in America I'd be scared to go out 😪😪😪
This is probably the worst thing I've seen ever.

Footage of police with guns drawn

Bodycam video shows Ohio police fatally shooting pregnant black woman

Ta'Kiya Young, 21, appears to advance the car towards an Ohio officer before a single shot is fired.

In 2021 there were 48,830 deaths from firearms. Their gun culture is completely different. American civilians collectively own almost 400 million guns (almost 50% of all civilian owned guns world wide!).

Of the 48,830 deaths, 537 involved law enforcement so a lot of murders and suicides and accidental gun discharges

Fireroselily · 02/09/2023 13:55

I am HORRIFIED. HORRIFIED. HORRIFIED. HORRIFIED.

I also can't help thinking that if she had gotten out of the car they would have manhandled her and she would have reacted out of fear for her unborn baby and they would have shot her anyway. For those saying she tried to run him over? Her car INCHED forward and he had more than enough time to get out of the way. HOWEVER, I really don't believe she did. The car is most likely automatic and rolled forward slighly during her panic as she edged off the brake. Pretty sure if she was intending to run him over or drive away she would have pressed down on the gas hard and it would have been a quicker manoeuvre. In any case, I don't believe the officers were in any immediate danger, the worst thing that would have happened is that she would have gotten away and the officers ego would have been a little bruised because they had to let her go as a shooting/high speed car chase isn't worth the crime. They could have easily ran her plates and made a home visit.

SHE DID NOT DESERVE TO DIE.

EarringsandLipstick · 02/09/2023 07:45

So the response is to fire at her?

And she didn't drive 'at' him - she moved forward, bumping him. Clearly not a wise move, but the officers couldn't think of any other course of action than firing a shot into car so that it hit & killed her?

I agree, what a random first response, I think I'll fire my gun. This is why I would never want to live in America. Their gun laws are beyond ridiculous.

I don’t usually participate in these threads because of the thinly veiled racism but against my better judgement, I let this one get to me. I was wrong about the racism, it’s not thinly veiled, it is overt and some people seem almost proud of it. The arrogance is truly breathtaking. Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of it comes from those who have no personal experience but feel they have a right to speak over those who do. This thread makes me feel things will never change. People on this thread are actively supporting a society where police can shoot people for no good reason. I’m sure you sleep perfectly well regardless but you shouldn’t. You are rotten to the core and there’s no hope for you.

I thought the same thing. It's a shame as Proudgypsy has been, quite rightly, vigorously defending travellers and gypsys when she has felt racist things have been said but like the poster you mentioned, turns as soon as it's other certain ethnicities.

It's awful. Unless there is a death penalty in ohio for shoplifting, that situation was escalated so much with tragic results.

It's thread like these though where I wish racist comments weren't deleted as hard to find proof for all the posters who demand evidence of racism on mn. Or if they are going to delete them then say - message deleted for racist comment.

That could apply to all isms really. Message deleted for ageist/ableist/sexist etc comment.

Unfortunately there is a real issue with racism in the traveller community (which I'm part of). I don't understand it because as a traveller I have faced so much prejudice which makes me want to defend all people with protected characteristics...

My point is about the gun culture where everyone knows or thinks everyone else has a gun. There is a lot of fear that comes from always worrying about being shot - by police or other civilians. The whole culture is very gun oriented.

SerendipityJane · 02/09/2023 14:03

Something that some people have been saying like .... forever, to a chorus of how we couldn't be more wrong.

In a way, it's a shame (and you have to wonder quite about who was pushing for what) that blackface is so unfashionable. Because in the same way some people need a couple of hours in a wheelchair to suddenly realise how shit life is for the disabled*, then some people might benefit from being mistaken for black for a couple of hours. Even in a city.

*Mobility issues aren't the only manifestation of disabilities, of course.

DyslexicPoster · 02/09/2023 14:04

Why not blow her tyres out? Why shot to kill as option A?

The question is how many no violent white people are shot per year V blacks in the USA? Not many I'd guess.

Saying its not racially motivated is dillusionL

They’re trained with their guns, they could have shot her tyres. They chose to shoot to kill.

saffronsoup · 02/09/2023 14:11

If you look at the body camera footage from the officer by the car door, you can see that the car did not just slowly inch forward. It hit the office at the front of the car with sufficient force that it lifted him (both feet) off the ground.

No court is going to say that a car isn't dangerous or that getting hit by a car in a parking lot is your own fault if you are in front of the car. The question will be whether or not it was excessive force to shoot given the degree of threat and danger of a moving car that had just hit someone. I doubt there is anything he can be charged with specific to her death given he had just been hit by the car. It is possible he didn't follow department protocol for dealing with petty theft or for drawing a weapon.

I understand your thinking but I wish they didn’t delete the post at all but perhaps MNHQ could comment underneath that it’s deletion worthy. I think we need to see the words that are being sad and in what tone and by which posters. It’s getting worse on here.

People shouldn’t be able to say any old racist (or any other ist) crap on here and then go about posting about what TV show they watch or whatever. It should remain so everyone knows who they really are and can choose with whom to interact.

That would be against department protocol. Shooting out tyres isn't a thing. He was lifted up by the front of the car - far too close to shoot a tyre. Shooting a tyre doesn't stop a fleeing car either - that is a movie move, not real life.

It’s far too easy to name change on here as well. It allows the wankers to hide.

However it does enable countless women to stay safe from predatory abusers.

And I suspect if this site were run by men, that wouldn't be the case. Especially as every other MN wannabee site that has come and gone these past two decades (where are they now ?) has totally and utterly failed to grasp that point.

I completely get what you mean about chatting on other threads like TV ones. I've done that before and then realised I'm interacting with a poster who has said offensive things on another thread I've been on or read. Made me feel quite displaced.

Ha! I grew up in an evangelical household/church. They talked the talk but I didn't see much evidence of walking the walk!

tttigress · 02/09/2023 14:26

I doubt if anything will happen to the officer.

If asked if he was under threat, the officer will say he was hit by the car (how hard will be irrelevant to the investigation).

I agree. She was suspected of shoplifting fgs. She's in a car, you can read her numberplate, if she needs to be arrested, go round to her house later and arrest her! This level of aggression from the police, right from the start of the interaction is madness. It's easy to say she should have complied, but who knows how they would react if they suddenly came face-to-face with two angry men with guns?

Natsku · 02/09/2023 14:49

StefanosHill · 02/09/2023 13:15

The gun culture plays a big part though, so if it’s not similar you can’t really compare

Gun culture does make a big difference, but it doesn't mean that police have to shoot to kill in every situation, especially not in a situation like this where someone is accused of just shoplifting, and isn't waving a weapon around or anything like that (and even in situations where someone has a weapon it can be possible to stop them without killing). They just aren't trained well enough, that's the issue.

Natsku · 02/09/2023 14:49

Well, that and all the other issues, like racism.
