Ok to get the mundane stuff out of the way

No one but DP and me have been in the house since Friday

We’ve lived here 20 years and are the only ones with keys. All spares are where they should be

We have 2 burglars alarms which we set when we go out. They have not been activated.

We have cctv camera front and rear covering all entrances to the house and garden. The only comings and goings recorded are DP and me.

We have 2 dogs

DP never plays practical jokes.

Now the mystery. My lovely heirloom grandfather clock stopped sometime since Monday night. I can’t say exactly when but I noticed this afternoon and asked DP to wind it.

5 minutes later he came into the kitchen looking rather pale and told me that the clock has stopped as the winding chains are missing. Both of them. They are some 8ft long with heavy weights on the ends and to remove them requires some dismantling of the clock as well as knowing how they are fixed.

They are not on the floor of the clock case. They have quite simply vanished.

We’ve gone from WTAF to freaked out, annoyed and now somewhat amused. Clearly something doesn’t like my clock!

I am totalling unable to come up with a rational explanation for this. There just isn’t one that either of us can come up with

I like to think there are residents of the spirit realm sufficiently concerned about their image that they steal chains to rattle. ‘Well if that doesn’t scare them, I’m off to haunt somewhere else….’ <flounce> 😆

Now I have a vision of Marley's ghost forever wandering around my house wearing metres of clock chain!!😂

you need cctv in every room now!
a few years ago I had some really weird things happen on the same day.
I had a chair by my make up desk and I looked and there was a pool of water on the seat. I dried it up. 10 mins later it was back. Dried it up, 10 mins later it was back. I was loosing my mind, looked everywhere around to see where the water could have come from there was no where.
i then picked up a lunchbox from the previous day to wash out that had strawberries in and a ear bud (wtf!) had been put in there which had been in my handbag the day before. I had not put an ear bud in there lol. It was so weird.

Unless the time on the clock has some relevance to a loved ones death, then I’d be looking to blame DH or the dogs.

1.Possibly with DH (or you) did something to them whilst sleep walking.

2.Or he’s had enough of the noise so has stolen the chains and is now acting as surprised as you are (the pale look on his face was guilt) 😁

3.Or the dogs did something to them and have pulled them off and hidden them somewhere.

I’m kind of hoping it’s number 2 and DH is to blame and is secretly panicking about his crime 😂

Any updates OP?

Well, this thread has sent me down a rabbit hole of trying to remember who sang the version of 'My Grandfather's Clock' that I had in my head. It was Jon Pertwee, from this https://www.discogs.com/release/11972275-Jessie-Matthews-2-And-Jon-Pertwee-Childrens-Favourites and listening to it on YouTube has sent memories flooding back! 5

I'm imagining there is a male ghost who felt left out when the female ghost was cavorting in high heels whilst wrapped in embroidery fabric. So they've taken the chains to prove that a chain can be just as a la mode as fabric. Wink

oakleaffy · 03/10/2023 17:09

That's fascinating.
My lovely neighbours had an 18th century long case clock with a ship on it made out of cut steel- I heard it ''ting...ting... ting..'' through the wall and loved it.
It had been in their family for generations.
I do miss the sound of it.

The sound of a Longcase clock is very soothing.

Wishingdirect · 03/10/2023 17:59

I’d be interested to know the history of the house..

SmallCountry · 03/10/2023 18:05

I'm enjoying the thought that your ghost(s) might have been so irritated with the ticking/chiming that they took drastic action!

FictionalCharacter · 03/10/2023 18:13

The man who serviced the clock in June got into your house and stole the chains.
Sounds like very few people would know how to take them out, so it had to be someone who understands these clocks.

Mummytotheboy · 03/10/2023 18:21

I know these clocks well, I grew up with one. 2 months isn't enough time to be used to it. What day is you bin collection just out of interest as I suspect DP as got up, removed them (I'd been inclined to check his watch history on youtube) and popped them in the bin that's just about to be emptied. I know you don't want to accept that DP as played any part in this but to me it's the only solution that makes sense.

They will turn up exactly where they should be. That's what always happens when I can't find things, anyway.

This. The Borrowers took them and will return them when they're done. 😁

ididntwanttodoit · 03/10/2023 18:55

Those clocks with the weights have a lie of their own. I had one that I inherited from my grandparents. It didn't work, but as it was a genuine Black Forest cuckoo clock, I hung it on the wall simply for decoration. It ing there for a number of years. One evening, the cuckoo popped out, and the clock chimed, then began to work. For a while. Then it stopped again.

Mikimoto · 03/10/2023 19:11

The cat crept in.
Crept out again.

TheCentreSlide · 03/10/2023 19:45

I do tend to think that DP got fed up of the noise and removed them. And is playing along because he’s ashamed of himself.

mrsmingleton · 03/10/2023 20:01

There is a 623 angel number with various meanings.

stickystick · 03/10/2023 20:09

Could either of you have been sleepwalking? It does happen.

ClaraBourne · 03/10/2023 20:28

'and once a brand new pair of black high heels. Those came back 6 months later but completely worn out! My ghost is definitely female.'

Somebody has keys you don't know about, my bet is the pevious owner!

I’d be interested to know the history of the house..

Built in 1802 and originally 4 cottages which were knocked into one and extended in the 1970s. It does have a sad death that we know about and probably more that we don’t.

2 months is plenty long enough! We can’t hear it in most of the house anyway and I grew up with the clock ticking away in the background so it’s a very familiar sound.

Most definitely not DP. He would not pull a prank like this that would cost him money. The refurb was over £600 so he certainly wouldn’t want to waste money on unnecessary chains!

Chestnutlover · 03/10/2023 21:01

definitely woo woo sounds just like the house I grew up in. Weirdly was the same, when my family first moved there it was very active, then calmed down. My parents still live in that house and every few months something odd happens. They had it excorsized when I was a child. It didn’t work. My dad is an atheist too so it must of been bad for him to agree to an exorcism. My mum was absolutely terrified for years and they nearly sold the place.

Lostinbrum · 03/10/2023 21:04

Wow I'm so invested in this. I hope you've already asked for them back!

PissOffJeffrey · 03/10/2023 21:41

@Elphame does 6.23 have any relevance to the sad death I wonder? Not necessarily in time but maybe 23rd June?

Hibye23289 · 03/10/2023 21:41

Ok I know I am going to sound dumb as I have no idea about these clocks. I understand they need the chains to work but have you seen the chains previously? Maybe it has always worked in a different way? No workmen round?
