I’ve withdrawn from organ donation register

1000 replies

Purpledogcollar · 28/08/2023 22:04

I give blood and have always been very pro organ donation.

Sadly I have just withdrawn as protest against reproductive organ donation. I can’t support it and am very conflicted as would like to donate other organs.

What are your views and is it a hasty decision (although not sure I would change my mind).

The PP said they would go back on the register once that tickbox is in place. Why?

Because that will give them assurance.

Why on earth would they add that in when they don't do that type of transplant? Is the assurance on their website that they don't do that type of transplant not enough? Why would a useless checkbox give more assurance? If anything it would give the impression that they do that type of transplant, when they don't! It would be LESS reassuring for god's sake.

Quite, though I honestly don't think there is much point in saying this over and over. The poster is clearly impervious to facts.

I am opposed to all assisted reproduction. I don't want to facilitate that in any way. I've always had a note with my donor card that no tissues or organs can be used as direct donation or research purposes in that field.

It's my body. I don't have to justify my refusal to anyone or for any reason.

What does two consenting adults conceiving via IVF have to do with you?

captainjacksparrow · 29/08/2023 12:21

Medical research and advancement is a wonderful and terrifying thing.

years ago people would’ve scoffed at the idea of lung and kidney transplants etc, however now it is a routine event.

in years to come we may even be debating brain transplants or robotic kidneys because science advances.

some things like cancer are taking too long so solve but as proven with covid other advances can happen remarkably quickly with enough power behind them

I have no doubt that some dedicated, boundary pushing physicians can and will transplant a womb into a man (again) just to try and solve this medical dilemma and to allow a man to give birth.

and they will achieve all this by using women, their bodies and their organs. Some of which according to this thread will be freely and gladly given.

redrighthand83 · 29/08/2023 12:24

HelterSkelter224 · 29/08/2023 12:14

Why?

Wouldn't you be happy to accept an organ, or a family member if you needed it?

Because they think the state is controlling them even though you still have free will and choice over donation.

Haven’t caught up with thread entirely yet, but totally agree.

They might as well add a tick box saying check here if you don’t want your brain transplanted into a killing military robot for the government.

That fear is just as rational as a fear that your uterus is going to be put into a man unless you’ve opted out of organ donation.

Actually, it's they don't do that type of transplant at present. That's what is meant by the wording 'currently' and 'not yet'.

The consent given by not opting out is ongoing, it covers the entirety of the future, not just the present.

I'm rather hoping not to die for a few years yet. A few decades, if I'm honest. So I want my registered consent to cover whatever type of transplants are being undertaken at that future point. Not what is being done currently

ShadyCat · 29/08/2023 12:32

I checked and wasn't signed up even though my family know my wishes. I have now signed up!

As I said before, given your active interest in the topic I don't think a change of rules in this area would pass you by. But if you are in favour of organ donation except for your uterus wouldn't the reasonable thing be to monitor the situation over the coming years and remove yourself from the register if there is a change you don't like? You're capable of doing that. Removing yourself in advance of such a time can't be out of genuine concern that they'll take your uterus and more of a spite/protest move, that may have real world consequences.

BillaBongGirl · 29/08/2023 12:34

Do you donate every bit of excess money you have at the end of the month to charities that could save peoples lives?
Yes I do actually. I don’t have much, but I donate a set amount every month to RNLI as they are the only people stopping the migrant boat drownings and I go on GoFundMe whenever I can and donate to people desperately trying to get funds for healthcare while on NHS waitlists. I just this weekend donated to Simone Heale Life Changing Surgery which is for a 23yr old who is suffering from kidney and tissue failure due to Enlher Danlos Syndrome as a birthday present to myself. I also sponsor several abandoned animals through WoodGreen charity as I am allergic to animals but still think it important that they be cared for and rescued too.

ShadyCat · 29/08/2023 12:35

I also did an advanced directive here which was easy. I have a copy, my family do and I have one to give to my GP shortly

Iwasafool · 29/08/2023 12:36

Well I'm safe as I don't have any reproductive organs left so that's handy.

BillaBongGirl · 29/08/2023 12:37

Username1107 · 29/08/2023 06:28

There isn't an option for that. I don't want it to be presumed consent, as it currently stands, until there is a clear option to opt out. But great that this thread has got lots of people to confirm their choices either way. Although it already is a presumed opt in unless you specifically said otherwise anyway.

Me too. And they’re opting out on the basis of misinformation and fake news from Pink News. 😢

HollaHolla · 29/08/2023 12:38

I just think that, I'm dead, I'll have no use whatsoever for anything left of me. Let them use what they like. Seems unlikely I'd be reanimated as a Frankenstein type, but, that doesn't even bother me.
Given my reproductive system failed me fairly spectacularly, so if it works for someone else, knock yourself out.
Meh. I genuinely can't get worked up about it....

Are people knee jerk removing themselves from the register for fear of their reproductive organs being given to men?

Put a womb in a man all you like, they're still not going to be able to get pregnant. You can stick a heating element on a chair, it doesn't make it a fucking kettle 🙄 womb or no womb, a man will never have the ability to grow a placenta, the hormones needed to support a pregnancy etc.

Regardless of the pressure from trans groups, official NHS donor registered organs are never going to be wasted on a totally pointless procedure. The organisation may be upside-down, but it's not completely fucking daft just yet. Removing yourself from the register is just taking the opportunity of your organs away from people who would be amazingly grateful for them to save their lives, for a totally misguided reason.

Yes. You’ve summed it up nicely. That is exactly what is happening for not all, but some of the posters on here.

BadNomad · 29/08/2023 12:46

Nice. So many innocent people (women!) are going to die because of your protest against something that isn't even happening. That will teach those misogynists 🙄

To be fair those women are not entitled to those organs. No one is.

it is and should be a gift freely given with whatever restrictions the donator wants.

you and many other posters may not like or agree with that sentiment but that’s how it works

Your question is irrelevant and misses the point.

They can do what they want. I'm entitled to hold my opinion and I'm entitled to refuse to participate or contribute in any way to facilitate research into this particular sector.

We're not talking about a set amount. We mean your entire salary. The whole lot, after food, electricity, etc. Everything left over, leaving 0.00 balance in your account. If not, you're depriving someone.

It's not 'fake news'. There was an actual study done by scientists with trans people. The study was in depth, it is on that other thread.

What restrictions? People have taken themselves off the register because of something false. That's not a restriction. That's being happy for people to die for your beliefs. Beliefs that aren't even a thing.

I was happy to donate my organs until someone on Twitter said they might transplant human hearts into crocodiles one day. Fuck that. No one is getting anything now.

And, yes, that is how it works. Everyone has the right to be an idiot.
