Just curious as it is due to start at midnight tonight and could potentially cause a lot of chaos. I don't support it.

YANBU - I DON'T support ULEZ expansion

Very supportive. Drastic action is needed for pollution and people’s health. ULEZ doesn’t go far enough - there should be a pay per mile scheme not just in London but everywhere. People need to be forced to be more active, the vast majority of illnesses are preventable.

'People need to be forced to be more active'

Do you honestly think people drive for fun? Or have you considered that it might be because people need to get from A to B?

Carsarelife · 28/08/2023 21:15

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz it's not so much the age it's more to do with petrol or diesel. My 2014 diesel mini isn't compliant, my 2004 one is

whathaveiforgottentoday · 28/08/2023 21:15

Just to give you an idea of how bad public transport is here. We have one bus route which travels across the borough (rather than the normal that goes towards town centre. It's a really useful route but ...... it goes only 4 times a day with first service at 9.30am. We need much better public transport.

I drive to work (my car is compliant) and it takes 25 minutes. By public transport it would take 1 hour 45 mins.

LittleBearPad · 28/08/2023 21:16

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/08/2023 21:13

How old are people's vehicles to need new ones? We drive a 2008 plate which is compliant. Most people we know have younger vehicles.

Older petrol cars are generally fine up to the early 2000s. 2015 or so diesels can be problematic.

Which is logical as diesels are filthy. But unfortunately the government incentivised people to buy diesels for many years. I can understand the irritation. I do support cleaner air though and this will help.

Userer · 28/08/2023 20:42

I will support it when there is a ban on wood burning stoves which every seems to be fine with.

I’m in favour of both! It’s ridiculous to not be in favour of one clean air measure just because they haven’t yet brought in another one.

Overthebow · 28/08/2023 21:17

I support it. We need some big changes for air pollution a DH climate change and we’re all going to have to make sacrifices. They should invest in better public transport though, it isn’t good enough outside London.

donkra · 28/08/2023 21:18

I drove past Sadiq's house earlier, and someone has parked a very vocally painted campervan screaming anti ULEZ outside it, so he'll see that every day as he is driven, yes driven, in a 2/3 car convoy to City Hall

Khan receives constant death threats and has to have 24hr police protection, far more than any previous London mayor. There is a reason he can't take the tube.

Lazyusername · 28/08/2023 21:18

To the people saying it's to stop people dying from polluting cars - so it's ok to kill people with your pollution if you can afford to pay £12.50 a day is it?
I am against this because it is a discriminatory system which is targeting poorer people and causing them hardship while the rich can continue to do as they please.

JanesBlond · 28/08/2023 21:21

Daphnis156 · 28/08/2023 20:58

Against unless there is cheap and reliable public transport- and there isn't.

A bus ticket is £1.75, how much cheaper do you want it?

The charges will push people to replace their cars so they don’t have to pay if they are driving into London regularly. Would you prefer a complete ban?

Of course not it's a deterrent. So many trolls

camelfinger · 28/08/2023 21:22

I’m in favour but have to keep this quiet. I think Khan is brave to have gone through with this. It illustrates how difficult it is to implement any environmental policies. I’m hoping it will reduce traffic, even if it’s people deciding not to pop out for 10 minutes to avoid the charge. This will also help people who rely on buses and couldn’t afford a car in the first place.

Jumpingthruhoops · 28/08/2023 21:23

amylou8 · 28/08/2023 20:01

No. I live outside but drive in 3 days a week. I had to scrap a perfectly good van and am now running my business in a small car as I can't afford to a compliant van. If it actually made a difference to air quality, well I'd still be pissed off personally but I'd get it, but it's just and underhand cash grab, and I can't even vote out that cunt Khan.

This! 100%.

This has nothing to do with improving air quality and everything to do with Khan trying to fill a massive black hole in TFL.

It was reported recently that Khan used £800,000 of public money to manipulate a report by Imperial College (so actual scientists) which revealed that the impact of ULEZ on air quality was negligible. Couldn't have that 'narrative' getting out, could he?

Khan is singlehandedly ruining London. But I suspect we will be stuck with him - his role as Chairman of C40 Cities depends on it.

WhenLifeGivesYouLimes · 28/08/2023 21:23

Carsarelife · 28/08/2023 21:01

No as it's never been about the cleaner air. If it was then you wouldn't be able to take your car. Instead you can drive your car into....area....as long as you pay. How is it ok if you pay?
It's pushing lots of people out of business and off the road. Lots of perfectly good cars with low mileage on being scrapped

You do realise that government taxes behaviour that society wants to discourage but not criminalise every day of the week.

I'm on the fence about ULEZ expansion (especially where it affects small businesses running vans) but the basic principle of "charge people for doing undesirable thing and they'll do it less/switch to our preferred alternative" is perfectly reasonable.

caramond · 28/08/2023 21:25

Yes, strongly support.
I live in outer London where everyone seems to drive everywhere even though public transport is more than adequate and lots of places are walkable anyway.

Gooseysgirl · 28/08/2023 21:25

I strongly support it.

Lazyusername · 28/08/2023 21:25

So anyone who has a different opinion to you is a troll. How sad and pathetic. And yes, a complete ban would be less hypocritical - this is blatant persecution of poor people. You can "push" people to replace their cars all you like but many people just can't afford it.

Jumpingthruhoops · 28/08/2023 21:26

Fifireee · 28/08/2023 21:22

You're right, it IS a deterrent. So why not outright ban cars then!?

Why? Because he can't make any money from that.

Clymene · 28/08/2023 21:26

Khan is a crook.

user1477391263 · 28/08/2023 21:27

Pebbles16 · 28/08/2023 20:53

Yes I do. Have lived within about 50 metres of the previous ULEZ so, living within central London, we don't own a car. My parents seem to think it's an affront on their civil liberties that they can't visit us without paying. Having said that, they are very rural so public transport does not exist therefore they have to drive which is a whole other problem.
I do think the scrappage scheme has been poorly handled, BUT should be a nationwide effort (obviously won't happen under the current government)

Possibly a naive question, but are there not park and ride schemes (or something similar) that could be used for such situations?

dutysuite · 28/08/2023 21:28

If I am forced to pay 12.50 everyday which I will have no option to do I”ll be sure to get get my money’s worth so I will drive it everywhere…those small trips I would have done on foot now get done in my car.

LittleBearPad · 28/08/2023 21:28

Lots of perfectly good cars with low mileage on being scrapped

If they are perfectly good why are they being scrapped and not sold elsewhere.

Icepinkeskimo · 28/08/2023 21:28

Fifireee · 28/08/2023 20:23

This has to happen. Sadiq Khan has been hung out to dry by every politician. He is subject to the most appalling abuse. There are these vans driving around London - plastered in anti ulez posters and horrible things about Sadiq Khan. It's horrific. Everything he posts on twitter results in nasty racism.
He wants to improve air quality.
He has to have an incredibly high level of security because of the amount of death threats he gets.

Boris Johnson gave money to his lover.
Spent tens of millions on a garden bridge which never arrived.
He got nothing like the vitriol Khan gets.

Well perhaps Mr Khan should have started on the air quality on London Underground first!
Ive just read another report regarding this, and it’s absolutely horrendous. So people get on the tube, as trust me that will really exacerbate any respiratory ailments.
No one forced him to apply for the role, did they?

Jumpingthruhoops · 28/08/2023 21:29

Gooseysgirl · 28/08/2023 21:25

I strongly support it.

Are you supporting it from the position of paying the £12.50 every day? If so, fair enough. If not, your opinion is irrelevant.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 28/08/2023 21:30

Fully support, and every UK town and city should follow. Make public transport more attractive, build safe segregated cycle routes and begin to approach what more advanced countries have achieved already.
