Just curious as it is due to start at midnight tonight and could potentially cause a lot of chaos. I don't support it.

YANBU - I DON'T support ULEZ expansion

I’m in support. Cars that are not ULEZ compliant shouldn’t be on the road in my opinion.

Whu · 28/08/2023 20:30

Yes I support it. Children are dying due to dirty air.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 28/08/2023 20:31

I support it because I like breathing clean air and don’t want to die younger than I need to.

No. I live outside but drive in 3 days a week. I had to scrap a perfectly good van and am now running my business in a small car as I can't afford to a compliant van. If it actually made a difference to air quality, well I'd still be pissed off personally but I'd get it, but it's just and underhand cash grab, and I can't even vote out that cunt Khan.

Ulez was actually brought in by Boris Johnson.

I'm not convinced of its overall environmental merit. I know it is focussed on clean air but on a broader environmental view encouraging people to change their cars is a bad thing as so much carbon is released in their manufacture.

I'm also not convinced that air quality is that much of an issue in the outer boroughs. Some of them are basically rural.

I'm personally unaffected as I live near the boundary but my car is already compliant. However, my cleaner who lives right on the boundary and really couldn't manage without a compliant car has had to buy a new car that she really can't afford. The implementation of the scheme doesn't seem to have been well-managed.

I agree with this.

Make your car last as long as possible. Drive as few miles as possible.

WinterCarlisle · 28/08/2023 20:35

Yes. For Ella Kissi Debrah, her amazing mum, everyone affected by air pollution and this poor planet.

BUT I don’t think the roll out has been managed well at all. As always it’s going to really affect poorer people who are already massively impacted by the CoL crisis

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/08/2023 20:36

I live in an inner-city, I'd love ULEZ to be introduced here.

MidnightOnceMore · 28/08/2023 20:38

I went car-free because I grew to hate traffic and air pollution, and I couldn't just keep moaning about it whilst also being part of the problem. It was a big change but an improvement overall.

I find it hard to comment on ULEZ specifically because the debate has got so angry and polarised.

Rantypanties · 28/08/2023 20:39

Can’t drive in my 10 year old diesel, can drive in in my 1966 American car…yeah…it’s all about the air quality….FFS

Clingfilm · 28/08/2023 20:39

Not sure as I live nowhere near but on a recent drive there I noticed so many black personal taxi type cars in the traffic in Hammersmith - the sort that'd take a celeb to the TV studio/a wealthy foreign person to Harrods. That and loads of lorries seemed to make up all the traffic in the west at least?
We were the only family in a car as far as I could see and we were tourists as the train would've cost hundreds for the whole family. I certainly feel sorry for those in the counties around London.

IsGoodIsDon · 28/08/2023 20:42

We had a reliable car that was perfect for our needs. Was hoping to get another 5 or so years out of it before we needed a new car.
We have sold it now ( we got peanuts for it) and bought a new used car.
The new used car was overpriced due to ulez inflating prices and the car we bought now has endless problems with it. I could cry. We can’t afford to sell it and get a different one again and I need it to to get to work as we live in the outer most areas of London and despite everyone thinking public transport is great in london it’s not in my area and I wouldn’t be able to make it work in time on the weekends as the buses don’t start earlier enough for my shift work.

We weren’t eligible for any of the scrapage schemes. I am so angry about it and feel this could have been implemented in a more gradual way and not just with 9 months notice.

Ive always voted labour but I definitely won’t be voting for the Sadiq Khan again in the London eMayor elections next year.

Userer · 28/08/2023 20:42

I will support it when there is a ban on wood burning stoves which every seems to be fine with.

Tinkerbyebye · 28/08/2023 20:43

Nope and I think it will backfire. Who is going to visit all those attractions now they have to pay an extra £12.50? I won’t be, nor will lots of people I know

Costs will go up for everyone in London now, the Plummer now has to pay £12.50 per day, that will be passed onto customers, small shops doing warehouse runs, that will cost extra, costs will be passed on

trains into London don’t always run due to strikes, and the tubes don’t help

Its going to lose Labour lots of seats in the next election and Khan will lose as Mayor

TooBored1 · 28/08/2023 20:43

100% support. And other measures to reduce car use in towns and cities.

I’m not sure I get your point? Most Londoners don’t drive in London. There’s no point. Public transport is much better than sitting in traffic

CurlyTop1980 · 28/08/2023 20:44

Yes. I think it makes sense.

No one with any sense is driving into central London to visit the attractions.

Sadiq Khan will win the elections. Have you seen the other candidates - they are hopeless

Because loads of those are filling up the roads.

grayhairdontcare · 28/08/2023 20:45

They needed to have public transport running 24/7.
They can't expect people to not need to travel and not have put the infrastructure in place

There are night buses and night tubes already. Have been for years

Fifireee · 28/08/2023 20:48

@Rantypanties You really can't be that dim. For every classic - which does hardly any miles - there are thousands of diesels.

Fifireee · 28/08/2023 20:49

@grayhairdontcare What?! They do.

user1477391263 · 28/08/2023 20:50

Yes. I bet the move to unleaded petrol produced similar howls all those years ago.

grayhairdontcare · 28/08/2023 20:50

@LittleBearPad previous posters are stating they will now have to pay to get to work because public transport isn't running at times required.
Not everyone lives in central London

I assume that poster meant their impact on air quality, which I believe the be the justification for ULEZ
