Must admit I'm flabbergasted by the extent of the ignorance on here towards a subject that is well documented, that is the history of terror inflicted on non white people by what is now the most powerful nation on Earth.

Granted I'm well versed on this subject as although I'm white and Irish, thus thousands of miles away from where it all took place (and still takes place), our own civil rights marches in 1960s Northern Ireland were directly inspired by those undertaken by MLK and co. What my parents generation as catholics went through isn't comparable to what the black (or natives) went through in america, but it inspired them nonetheless.

The Karen should give any decent human being chills. They are among the worst of the worst. The men carried out the terror (public lynchings) but quite often at the instigation of the Karen, the racist white american woman who weaponised her white privilege. From george washington's wife and daughters onward (who felt entitled to own human beings, like pets) that place has traumatized a group of people who showed incredible dignity and courage in the face of unspeakable atrocities.

I think we’re all flabbergasted by how obtuse you are. And that, as a white woman, you’ve been spamming the board to try to derail even Black posters saying they don’t like the term. Educate yourself and listen to people’s lived experiences.

"Karen" doesn't refer to an assertive woman. It refers specifically to the kind of woman, or man "male Karens", who screams at employees for no reason, who asks to see the manager because they don't like the answer they've given even though it's correct, who try to get people fired for stupid shit, who scream at non-employees they think work some where...it's not about any woman who tries to speak up

I know a lot of middle aged women. And I am one.

Not a single one of us has ever screamed at an employee for no reason. Nor exhibited any of the other (rather extreme) behaviours you describe.

But most of us have been called "Karens".

Generaly when we've been calling out sexism.

I've noticed that as I am more often being called "a Karen", I'm less often being called "a white feminist".

Which leads me to the conclusion that they are both terms to try to get an experienced, confident, middle aged women to STFU. Or to try to discredit what we're saying via a lazy sexist agesist ad hominen. Or to discourage others from associating with us and what we're saying via a lazy sexist ageist ad hominen.

And I've never heard a man called either "a Karen" or "a male Karen". Nor any other equivalent slur...

@DeeCee77 this

The term has changed usage, it’s not what we want

At least try to hear what women are saying

Then why aren’t you out there castigating the men who have misappropriated the word into a general misogynistic insult rather than posting C&P into this thread. You are lecturing the victims of an insult for the fact that an insult is being misused against them.

It’s starting to sound like the first rule of misogyny

  1. Women are responsible for what men do

Men have misappropriated this term, yet you are here telling women that they don’t understand.

Whether or not people wish to claim that "Karen" refers only to white women and the uneasy status they occupy in terms of privilege to trumps, the origins of the term are far from clear. It certainly wasn't in use around the time of Emmett Till. The very first widely seen "Karens" were all of the "she took my kids and turned them against me" variety. At that point it referred to women who men felt had treated them badly in a divorce. It has developed since then to refer to any woman, and has also simultaneously been claimed to be actually a tool to fight oppression, which I guess is handy for the men who enjoy using it.

Obtula · 26/08/2023 10:53

*privilege top trumps

WolfFoxHare · 26/08/2023 10:54

What's ironic is although the term Karen refers to a racist white american woman weaponising her white privilege, thus nothing to do with those who are not, your friends are displaying some of the Karen tropes (ie. self absorbed, complaining)...

What’s actually ironic is that @DeeCee77 seems to be saying that we’re automatically Karens if we object to being called a Karen. That simply rejecting the label makes us a Karen.

Seems a bit like using a ducking stool. Unsurprising, since it’s the modern-day equivalent of calling an assertive middle-aged woman you disagree with ’Witch’.

I can’t decide if @DeeCee77 is simply too stupid to engage with the fact that the slur has evolved and is used differently in the UK, or is just deliberately silencing us.

Obtula · 26/08/2023 10:57

They are among the worst of the worst. The men carried out the terror

So women weren't actually the very worst. Do you have a term for the men who carry out the actual violence?

anotherside · 26/08/2023 10:57

@DeeCee77

Is just one of those people who likes to “educate” people, while completely ignoring the valid objections everybody raises to arguments presented.

“If I link to just one more article and post just one more picture, then surely everyone will fall in line”.

No, debate doesn’t work like that.

ChateauMargaux · 26/08/2023 10:58

Loads of comments and I haven't read them all.

Women have been consistenty ignored and dismissed by the medical establishment... this gives practice management a green light to continue to do that.

Women take on an uneven share of household administration, including booking medical appointments, failure to understand your service booker and filtering out their needs using technology is something that will increasingly become a problem as technical design continues to be overwhelmingly staffed by men who design systems unfit for women.

The Karen insult has been used to refer to women, speaking..

The source of the phrase as well as the justification of it's use by picking out examples where white women have been unquestionably racist are true but there are significantly more examples of where men have been racist, have been violent and have been a much larger part of the societal structure that created the slave trade and kept non white people out of society. I do not question that many white women benefited from segregation and slavery, but men bear a greater share of the responsibility for this but feel less of the anger and feature less in the examples where specific individuals names, stories and images are shared.

Definition of a Karen
What does Karen mean? Karen is a pejorative slang term for an obnoxious, angry, entitled, and often racist middle-aged white woman who uses her privilege to get her way or police other people's behaviors.

Obnoxious
Angry
Entitled
Often racist
Uses her privilege

How is that being used as a slur against assertive women?

Soozikinzii · 26/08/2023 11:00

My sons MiL is called Karen and such a lovely person as you could ever wish to meet . It's really annoying .

WhenIWasAFieldMyself · 26/08/2023 11:01

GoFaster83 · 26/08/2023 10:27

And can we please stop with the "middle aged, expressing displeasure " as if its describing people who are perfectly correct and being assertive. No. That's not what it describes. It describes people who are being unreasonable, rude or unkind. In my opionion its an inappropriate and not nice word for not nice or justifiable behaviour. Let's just call them cunts and be done with it! (Actually that probably would make the advert better!)

Ah. So insulting a woman by calling her an offensive term for female anatomy is somehow an improvement.

Again, I really hope, whatever sex you are, you aren't bringing up daughters as you have no respect whatsoever for women.

I don't mind a proper disagreement. Some just go on and on and don't hear the other opinion/s. Derail threads and are just totally boring.

Be nice to mute even if others could still read if they wanted to.

There is no such term.

As ever, women get the blame for male violence.

That's been answered time and time again if you actually read the thread. You've obviously not bothered to read it.

ChillysWaterBottle · 26/08/2023 11:03

The term 'Karen' originated from white men on Reddit and it was always meant to be a misogynistic attack on white women. Not sure why all the revisionist history on this thread.

QueenBitch666 · 26/08/2023 11:04

Maddy70 · 26/08/2023 11:04

Really can't get worked up about this even though i dont really like the term. . My sister's name is Karen she calls other people Karen . While it is derogatory, the actions of those who are called it do sometimes need to be called out on those actions and it's a way of highlighting that poor behaviour

Exactly.

If, as @DeeCee77 claims, this label is a necessary tool in naming oppression (despite not existing before 2018 although the concept of weaponised tears existed long before), it's interesting that there isn't a male equivalent. Despite the men being the ones who do the actual killing. Takes the heat off them nicely I guess. I have certainly many times witnessed the unedifying spectacle of a white beardy he/him wanker bang on about weaponised white women's tears, completely oblivious to the fact that what he is talking about with such outrage and fury makes him a weapon. (In every sense.)
