Been watching the series on Netflix and really like her, she seems smart and strong and puts up with a lot. The only thing I don’t understand is allowing the kids to go to Tyson’s fights, he even says he doesn’t want them there.
Has anyone else seen the series?
it’s made me really intrigued about the traveller lifestyle and how things must be for females

I think the girls leave school early so as not to be corrupted by gorgers ( non travellers)

megletthesecond · 26/08/2023 07:19

I don't think anyone who doesn't educate their teenagers is great.

You know those kids aren't walking around museums and theatres and being tutored at home.

Proudgypsy · 26/08/2023 07:25

@pickledandpuzzled I think there's a difference between a person who fully understands another culture as forms an opinion on it (be it positive or negative) and a person who just 'disapproves' of something they know nothing about simply because it doesn't conform to their own beliefs.

The education thing is never going to be fully understood because it's the most important thing in a lot of cultures. It just so happens that that is not the case in ours. That doesn't mean to say that there aren't plenty who choose to be formally educated, it's just not the case for the majority.

These kind of "reality" tv shows are mostly fake anyway and aren't a real representation.

He's a dog, a known cheat, and she's another doormat, Colleen Rooney type, who puts up with it for the lifestyle.

Any need to bash another woman? Colleen Rooney might stay for her kids? Or because they've been together from a young age? Leave people alone fgs.

This x 100. Travellers get so much hate for doing what other cultures do. It's just not okay to bash those ones. Infact, people go travelling and glamourise them. You wouldn't believe the amount of people who think the word p*y is okay to use. I'm sick of it, ignorant racists.

Whitewolf2 · 26/08/2023 07:28

I’m not so sure, it seemed like a pretty chaotic home life to me, I haven’t watched it all but thought she put up with an awful lot and I wouldn’t have 6 kids with a man more into his whims and dog than his family. That bit where Paris thought she’d lost one of the sons and he shouted at her never to do that again, jeez what a guy.

Exactly. Makes me sad for the girls. Funny how some things are still acceptable because of “culture”. 🙄

ToughFuss · 26/08/2023 07:42

There’s plenty of good travellers around, altho people often only see the worst and then tar them all with the same brush which is as appalling as if you did it to any minority group imo. As a whole, travellers are quite insular and it’s difficult to truly know them unless you are one yourself. Unfortunately this absolute bellend is not a good example. He’s a very unpleasant man, he’s racist, homophobic, sexist, anti Semitic… the list goes on. She accepts his bullshit because that’s just what you do. Neither are, in any way, role models or admirable imo.

What kind of things are you referring to?

Home education

If the parents left school early themselves, what standard of education are they going to give their kids at home? They're not going to be qualified to educate their kids to GCSE or A level are they?

Also, Paris is quoted as saying to her dd that she wants to prepare her for a career outside of the home as well as being a SAHM. How is that possible if she's not allowed to go to school?

Girls leave school early so they can be taught to keep the home clean, understand that the husband rules the roost, and that she can’t go out with friends. Allowing girls to be educated goes against this.

This is hilarious, and wrong. Where do people get this information from

I agree, the girls are more compliant and easier to coercively control at that age. Sending them to school post 11+ means they'll mix with other communities and develop opinions etc. By stopping their education at 11 guarantees that the next generation of an uneducated, insular and prejudiced group continues.

Proudgypsy · 26/08/2023 08:01

Having a culture where the foundation is based heavily on women staying at home and keeping house is not acceptable

why?

Floppymoppy · 26/08/2023 08:05

Venezuela has a tutor and is going to be doing her exams, let's be real she will have more opportunities to travel, experience things and whatever else than most children anywag. She even said herself lots of her friends now don't want to just stay at home, whilst it was the case in the past girls now in the community do have more opportunities than people think.

Anyway, I think Paris came across well, she's intelligent, well spoken and empathetic imo. She also has the patience of a saint, but they've been together for ages and it's not like his career and lifestyle is going to be easy for any woman; I am not a fan of his at all though. I thought it was good how although they have millions in the bank she says no to them and tries to keep some routine.

FadeAwayAndRadiate · 25/08/2023 23:26

I can't stand the woman for many reasons already listed, particularly that girls shouldn't be educated and should just look to get married, and that should be their main life goal!!!

But the final nail in the coffin for me - was when she said (on Loose Women,) that she won't be sorry when her dog dies - because he's an absolute pain in the arse, and just gets on her nerves all the time ... Completely cold unfeeling individual with all the compassion of a kipper. Can't stand the woman. Wouldn't care if I never saw her again.

Venezuela has a private tutor at home, she just doesn't go to school.
How does that mean she doesn't want her girls to be educated?

notlucreziaborgia · 26/08/2023 08:10

I’m not sure how it can be seriously claimed that other cultures that demand the subservience of women escape criticism. They really don’t. I see significantly more apologism for traveler culture than I do for others tbh.

I’m also not sure how someone can claim that the daughter is being supported in making a choice between tradition and a career, when said daughter has been removed from school and is primarily if not solely exposed to the traditional ways. It’s paying lipservice to choice, whilst simultaneously removing all meaningful access to it.

Justleaveitblankthen · 26/08/2023 08:12

FadeAwayAndRadiate · 25/08/2023 23:34

No. Definitely not.

I didn't know that about the dog either.

It was obvious she had no time for it. It was kept in a (- albeit-glamorous) Pen in the garden and she said she would never walk a dog as she would never pick up it's 💩
They must have 'people' who come to do those things when he is away?

Does she have Nannies?
Her mother only seems to come over occasionally..and six (seven now?) kids to deal with 😵‍💫

Totalwasteofpaper · 25/08/2023 23:08

I have a lot of respect for her. She came across so so well in the show

Travellers all stop school after primary. The girls learn to cook and keep house because they want to marry and the boys learn their fathers trade.

I like that she is pushing Venezuela to make a choice - because she doesnt want to marry and follow that path. Paris said thats fine but what do you want to do? You cant do nothing that isn't an option. You can't mooch off your father - you have to work for yourself.

The girls learn to cook because they want to marry....?
No, it's because their community/parents pressure them to do so.

You like a 13 year old child is being pushed to make a choice

How many 13 year olds know what they want to do/be at that age? Staying at school and completing their GCSEs is what would give them the choice to go to uni or build a career in various fields afterwards. They don't have to of course, but they have the option at least.

ChristmasCwtch · 26/08/2023 08:19

Opened thread expecting to read about a disastrous holiday in France 😂

Pabbit · 26/08/2023 08:20

There's a nanny who appears in the series so they have at least one, can't blame them though- how many times are people on here told to outsource what you can if you have a lot on your plate!

V has a tutor and as well as learning how to keep a home from Paris will have opportunities other children can only dream of should she want them. I agree with a PP that it's fine of course to have opinions on different cultures but when they're based on ignorance rather than fact, or on unfounded assumptions then it's not really a fair critique is it.

BustyDin · 26/08/2023 08:24

Wouldn't care if I never saw her again

That is quite easily done. I'd never heard of her until I opened this thread.
