Please, talk me down. I was trying to park in a rush today and I have hit someone's car in a car park. I left my details, I scratched one panel. Please someone tell me it's going to be OK because i am devastated 😭

Or tell me about stupid things you have driven into and cheer me up.

I knocked my wing mirror off yesterday! I also reversed into my husband’s car earlier this year. 🤪

voltacup · 24/08/2023 23:10

Easily done. Depending on the quality of their car they might not care. I reversed into a car in an aldi carpark once and the woman came back as I was leaving a note and she said "oh don't worry I wouldn't have even noticed as my car is so bashed up anyway".

Yoloohno · 24/08/2023 23:11

I’ve scratched a car in a car park, the person called me was nothing but nice probably because I owned up.

Went through insurance, all sorted no issue. These things happen to everyone.

Krawnprackers · 24/08/2023 23:12

Well done for leaving your details. Mine has been wrecked by another car, when parked, and they are not admitting it. Very upsetting.

Itsallgoingtopot · 24/08/2023 23:12

32 years ago I accelerated into a lamppost in an empty car park.

About 10 years ago I drove into a petrol pump and broke it 🙈

katmarie · 24/08/2023 23:12

It's just a bit of metal. It can be fixed. I know just how you feel, I went into the back of someone a few weeks ago and I was so upset, but really it's just a car and cars can be fixed.

They've already messaged me for the details. And they're European with European reg and getting it fixed at home so will probably be ££££.

That was kind of her! Someone scratched my already scratched car before and I just left it, clearly my karma isn't coming this time though!

When I was 19 and heavily pregnant I knocked off a old couples wing mirror on their parked car with my car just after passing my test.
Mortified I drove straight home. My partner got me to go back & it was fine the old couple were great about it.

Don't worry about it!

Oh no! That must have been a lot. Can you still get insured? I have (had) six years no claims 😭

Yeah don’t worry, it happens! I reversed into a parked car at a speed of 3mph when there was really no excuse except I was tired and had young kids.

someone scratched my car recently, they were absolutely horrified but I couldn’t have cared less. Any sensible person would not fret over a minor scratch. If you report to your insurers, your premium will increase the following year, as will theirs, even if neither of you claim because it has to be registered on the industry database.

Frabbits · 24/08/2023 23:16

Typically you don't actually loseall of your no claims for a single accident - which makes no goddamn sense, of course.

Don't worry about it, accidents happen, that's why you have insurance.

HundredMilesAnHour · 24/08/2023 23:18

Well done for doing the decent thing and leaving your details. Lots of people don't (which I think is appalling).

There are THREE 😡times that my car has been damaged in car parks by other drivers. The first two times, they both did runners and I got back to my car (from my office) to find my driver side door damaged. Cost me a fortune (and a lot of time and inconvenience) keep getting it fixed (and then some idiot doing it again grr). At least the third time, the person had the decency to leave their details.

Radiodread · 24/08/2023 23:19

Oh damn, cross post. That’s very annoying about it being a non-UK reg car. But you did the right thing leaving your details.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 24/08/2023 23:20

Good on you leaving details most people wouldn't.

About 6 months after passing my test, I was reversing onto my driveway, fire engine starts coming down the road lights and siren blaring, so I try to reverse faster, I hit and knock down the wall my dad had finished building 2 days before hand 🤦‍♀️ I called him in tears and he laughed at me...

SausageMonkey2 · 24/08/2023 23:21

That’s what your insurance is for

I would have left them anyway but the delightful icing on the cake was the beer garden full of people watching me

That won’t make any difference to you. Your insurers will pay it, not you, and the effect on you personally will be the same regardless.

Malarandras · 24/08/2023 23:44

Don’t worry OP let your insurance company handle it, it’s what you pay them for. You did the right thing which is all you can do. Don’t beat yourself up over it.

Marellaspirit · 24/08/2023 23:46

The day after I passed my test I crashed my mum's new car into a lamppost trying to do a 3 point turn.

I scraped the car in the next bay trying to park at sainsburys a few months ago while the guy was sitting in it! I was mortified but he was so lovely about it. I gave him my details but never heard from him again. It was fairly superficial so probably just cleaned up. My car came off worse.

Gemstar3 · 24/08/2023 23:52

Could have been worse OP, my DP once drove into a police van in his work car park! Then had to pay to fix his car, which came off far worse than the police van!

alloutofcareunits · 25/08/2023 00:04

My daughter did the same thing on Saturday, she was really embarrassed and didn't know what to do. She left her details at the reception of the sports centre she was at and the owner rang her, he couldn't have been nicer. Insurance company are handling it all, thankfully she'd added protected no claims when she renewed last year. It'll be fine

Lilpop90 · 25/08/2023 00:38

I wish you’d hit my car!
some arse hit mine and drove away causing £2700 worth of damage!! Car not road worthy and angle of CCTV not enough to prove! Absolute scum. Well done for being a decent human being and leaving your details- I’m sure they will appreciate it! 💜

lauraisa · 25/08/2023 01:20

Seriously don't even worry about it!!!! In the grand scheme of life this so insignificant! Get it sorted through insurance and move on.

morag1234 · 25/08/2023 08:00

Don't worry.
It is what it is. I can't tell you the amount of times I've done this.

I've hit my wall trying to reverse down my drive.
I reversed in to a lamp post. Went to look and couldn't see any damage so didn't mention it to my partner. A week later he asked why the back light was all smashed (oops).
I've scraped a van after dropping off at nursery (really tight turning to get out of the nursery with loads of cars parked just as you exit).
I've hit numerous wing mirrors (of parked cars).
My worst one was around a year ago. I was desperately trying to park by the school. There is an average sized car park there but it was rammed. I decided to try and park in between 2 cars. As you can tell, my driving isn't the best so I don't normally do that but I was late and panicking. I noticed that I was really close to one of the cars and went to reverse to go back in the spot again. As I was about to, the owner ran over shouting at me that I was really close. I don't know what came over me but I panicked and somehow managed to scrape her car and in my panic, then drive forward and hit her wing mirror too. It was SO loud. The woman (rightly) screamed "that's my fucking car" and went absolutely ape shit. I let her get it out of her system and she rang later to apologise for shouting 🤣.

Anyway, since that day I have suddenly learnt to drive properly. Haven't hit anything since and I'm quite a good driver now. Shame it took all of that first 🤣🤣
