I have hit someone's car

Please, talk me down. I was trying to park in a rush today and I have hit someone's car in a car park. I left my details, I scratched one panel. Please someone tell me it's going to be OK because i am devastated 😭

Or tell me about stupid things you have driven into and cheer me up.

I wouldn't worry about it, you've done the right thing.

I reversed into a concrete-lined ditch once - just the back wheels, but it wrecked the rear jacking points (and not much else, thankfully). Loved that car and I was gutted, but it was written off before I could spend £££ fixing it two weeks later because some dozy woman was too busy drinking her coffee to watch the road and piled into me (at the back of stopped traffic) at 60mph. Then she had the temerity to claim that visibility was "poor" when I claimed on the insurance - it was a perfect sunny day, but yeah...I guess it would've been a bit poor with a Starbucks cup in front of her face...

Dad once took his wingmirror off on our garden gatepost.

We had a mini and he and mum had a debate about whether it would fit through if he only opened one gate.

He decided to prove he was right.

He was wrong.😂

pickledandpuzzled · 25/08/2023 08:54

I did similar. The damage on mine is so minor I won't be fixing it. The damage on his is also minor- he's going to polish it and see what happens. There was a bit of a scuff on the curved line of the panel. I'm waiting to hear. I took photos.

I haven't told insurance yet, as it will probably be really minor.

SlipSlidinAway · 25/08/2023 09:09

I did the same once and left my details. I spent the rest of the day stressing about how angry the owner of the very expensive looking car would be. I braced myself when he rang and started off with, "I can't believe ..." I thought he was going to say he couldn't believe anyone could be that careless or stupid. But he actually said he couldn't believe anyone would be so honest as to leave their details.

Yes you had a full beer garden watching, but you could easily have left false details. So congratulate yourself on doing the right thing. And - as others have said - this is why you have insurance!

The day after passing my driving test, I hit a parked car at the park where I walked my dog. Knocked on the front door of the house the car was parked outside and burst into tears when they answered. When I explained I had only passed my test the day before, they laughed a bit and said they would just get it fixed at the local garage and wouldn't go through their and my insurance. So kind! But I've' never lived it down...

willowtree66 · 25/08/2023 09:12

I reversed my ambulance into a street light, leaving it at a 45 degree angle, witnessed by patient's wife!

DRS1970 · 25/08/2023 09:16

At least your mistake is resulting in minor side effects and nobody was hurt. You can replace a car, but not a person right?

Brewdug · 25/08/2023 09:27

This has happened twice to me with DCs opening doors too roughly and bashing other cars. Only small scratches but I left notes just in case. One texted and told me not to worry and I never heard from the other!

Amboseli · 25/08/2023 09:30

I scraped a Mercedes in a car park. Not very badly but it was a nice car and the lady just said don't worry about it.

itslifeisntit · 25/08/2023 09:36

It will all be ok! You didn’t hit a person or an animal. Not to downplay the impact on you because I know it will be costly but don’t be hard on yourself, it happens and you did the correct thing leaving your details.

I passed my driving test as a teen, came home and tried to drive my brand new car which was sitting inthe driveway and in the excitement of it all put it into first instead of reverse accidentally. Foot on the gas and drive it straight into our driveway wall. Quick way to learn how expensive repairs can be!

TGGreen · 25/08/2023 09:41

DH has a little MG. I have a large 4x4 (I need it for where we live). I once reversed into the MG. God knows how I didn't see it. I felt such a fool calling the insurers to tell them I essentially reversed into my own car, that I parked there. These things happen.

MikeRafone · 25/08/2023 09:44

Easier to mend metal than flesh - give yourself a pat on the back for leaving your details as many do not do this.

Rainbowsandrainclouds1 · 25/08/2023 09:45

Please don't worry. It was an accident.

I scraped the side of a hire car on the front of a longer SUV pulling out of the car park space. Id had a shit day, the car park spaces were too short and narrow and the road between rows was also too narrow.

I left a note and got a nice message from the driver thanking me for owning up but that their car wasnt worth getting fixed.

I also, my some miracle, didnt cause enough damage on the hire car for enterprise to take from ny deposit.

Hormonal, postnatal and sleep deprived I drove my (now ex) husband’s brand new Audi TT into a wall - oh shit that the accelerator not the brake! Thankfully very low speed

When I was 19 and heavily pregnant I knocked off a old couples wing mirror on their parked car with my car just after passing my test.
Mortified I drove straight home. My partner got me to go back & it was fine the old couple were great about it.

Don't worry about it!

What has being pregnant got to do with it?

Fairymother · 25/08/2023 11:01

redfacebigdisgrace · 24/08/2023 23:09

I knocked my wing mirror off yesterday! I also reversed into my husband’s car earlier this year. 🤪

I was gonna say this. Stupidest thing ever when i hit my husbands car trying to park 🤦🏻‍♀️

always2323 · 25/08/2023 11:05

I pulled out on a very tricky country road junction in my brand new sparkling big car. And I'd pulled out on gorgeous Audi TT. Both cars were a mess. I was devastated for us both. That's what insurance is for. Accidents happen

BCBird · 25/08/2023 11:12

I managed to back into the one and onli car in the work's car park😫BMW - their's not mine😫felt like a right ass. These things happen. U did the right thing.

Glitterblue · 25/08/2023 11:15

Our neighbour’s friend got her car jammed into our neighbour’s gate yesterday while trying to get into the driveway! There’s a wall on each side and then gates, and somehow the angle she’d gone in at (which was more diagonal than straight in!), the left side of the car was stuck against the wall (with the gate opened in, if that makes sense) and the other side seemed to be rammed against the gate somehow. The car looked far far too wide for the space she was trying to get through - our neighbour just has a small car but this was a huge wide thing.

Comefromaway · 25/08/2023 11:19

You hit a piece of metal, not a person. That's what insurance is for. Don't give it any more head-space, let the insurance company deal with it.

WetBandits · 25/08/2023 11:23

My exhaust bracket snapped so I drove to Halfords to get some metal ties to hitch it back up with. Finished fixing the exhaust and then hit a post as I was coming out of the space 😒 lovely big dent in the wing. I went to a cheap local bodyshop to fix it, but the car was 10 years old so the overall colour had faded and the respray of the wing was SO obvious as they had mixed it to what the car originally looked like. It was yellow too 🙈

KeepSmiling89 · 25/08/2023 11:23

My first car, I once reversed into someone's fence and ended up with a massive dent.

I wrote off my previous car in December 2022 - driving home for work for 2 weeks off over Christmas. Missed 2 turn offs on a country road to get me back to my home town (I work about 20-30 minute drive from home), didn't know there was a blind bend coming up, didn't have time to slow down and crashed through bushes into a field...landing on a stone dyke/wall. Broke my back in the process as it was about a 10/15 foot drop as well!

Got my current car in March...about a month or 2 after getting it, I scratched 3 panels on the walls outside my mum's house - spent £720 getting them fixed at a bodywork repair shop!

I really shouldn't be trusted with a car 😆

Cuppaand2biscuits · 25/08/2023 11:24

I got myself wedged between a lamppost and a wall down a really narrow road when try to pull out of a driveway.
It was awful and I made such a mess, enormous dent in my door.
I also reversed into a skip and bust my boot so bad it wouldn't close! I reversed into my mother in laws car when trying to park in very heavy rain and I cried.

pickledandpuzzled · 25/08/2023 11:28

@Scalottia I'm not the Pp, but I'm much less reliable when I'm pregnant. It's like my judgment is just slightly off, perhaps because my body is slightly different. I pretty soon learned to give myself extra time and room for everything. I'm slightly clumsier when pregnant. I'm sure it's not just me.

FunkyMonks · 25/08/2023 11:31

I've had someone crash into my car outside house and drive off costing me £££ to repair while some say it's just metal and yes if someone does the decent thing and owes up to causing the damage and passing on the correct and relevant info so that the car can be repaired happy days.
But sadly more and more don't bother and drive off leaving the owner of the damaged car through no fault of their own lumping the repair bills.

I love my current car and would be devastated if someone else caused damage to it I take care of it and want to ensure it remains looking good as not everyone can afford to swap cars every year or so.

But thanks OP at least you were one of the decent ones to admit fault and leave details accidents happen I've had a few bumps myself over the years including reversing my own old car into wall 🤦🏻‍♀️😂
