Do you still tape things off the tv?

Hi all,

I know this may seem like a silly thing to ask in 2023, but do you still tape things off the TV?

Also, if you don't mind, what do you have connected to your main TV?

I'm TV shopping.... Not as easy now as it used to be, unless ya a bloody tech mad.

4k? Uhd? Not a clue. When did 55" become the normal TV size?

I did see one with a remote that lit up and thought it was fantastic. However, it failed because it had no headphone jack. Apparently we need one, wireless be damned.

No! On demand does that

rockpoolingtogether · 21/08/2023 15:27

I don't even connect my dvd player now because I can buy digital movies. The last time I did was for my toddlers so they could watch Maisie mouse on dvd

Madeinessex · 21/08/2023 15:34

I’m a bit clueless for this sort of thing too.
The kids record stuff to the Virgin storage thing. That’s the closest to taping I suppose.
Otherwise we use on demand, catch-up/apps for the various channels. Bit irritating setting up all the channel apps, but once done it’s sorted.
We’ve got some huge great Samsung thing, not sure about a head jack thou? It’s quite old in TV terms, but it does the job and it won’t be changed until it has to be changed.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 21/08/2023 16:17

No, I don't even watch live TV - everything is on demand.

Samcro · 21/08/2023 16:18

i record them with virgin, means I can ff adverts

ChocolateCinderToffee · 21/08/2023 16:18

'tape'???
😂

UndercoverCop · 21/08/2023 16:19

We have virgin so do it on that.

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/08/2023 16:20

We have a Humax box and can record on that. I try to record ITV and channel 4 so I can whizz through the adverts.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 21/08/2023 16:22

I record on a Humax box - when I watch ITV, Channel 4 or 5 on catch-up, they have more adverts than programme and who has time for that?!

Hillarious · 21/08/2023 16:23

I think I may have written this myself! Yes - whizz through the ads, and also you can record films to watch at some point in the future when they're not currently being streamed. Dead quick to find what I want to watch, too.

Beezknees · 21/08/2023 16:23

I have Sky and I record everything so I don't have to watch bloody ads.

TyrannosaurusSex · 21/08/2023 16:24

No, but my Dad does!

catsandkid · 21/08/2023 16:25

No. Don't even have a sky/virgin box as I just watch everything on demand (iPlayer, Netflix, more4, etc) and my tv is a smart tv with it all built in plus free view. I only watch freeview/proper tv to catch the news in the morning.

LaraMargot · 21/08/2023 16:27

Record, has subtitles which catch up doesn't.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 21/08/2023 16:27

Yes we do, we have a BT box you can record on to. Very useful to whizz through adverts as the Channel 4 and ITV catch up players still have adverts and also to record a film that we might want to watch but it's on too late etc as films are not generally on the catch up players and I'm not paying for every single subscription service in existence.

Iclyn · 21/08/2023 16:27

Hands up , we do direct to the box , don't really know why , habit I guess .
Films aren't always available on catch up so if we see on we might watch we record it.

TheCyclingGorilla · 21/08/2023 16:28

Haven't ever had a vhs recorder. We have a Sky box, & streaming services that we get from the smart telly apps.

Is your telly going to be a smart telly? Bluetooth? Casting? We have a Samsung that's been going for about 10 years. My DD's Nintendo switch is connected to it too (don't ask me how, it's my husband's realm of expertise).

StillWantingADog · 21/08/2023 16:29

what kind of 'tape' do you use??!!!

Generally no, I don't even watch TV I just stream
but I have occasionally recorded stuff from ITV onto the hard drive because I find their app really annoying and if I record I can fast forward the adverts.

ImABox · 21/08/2023 16:29

You mean like a video recorder? To tape lovely ultra 8k or whatever HD onto a tape? And play back the fuzz? I don’t get it

kittykarate · 21/08/2023 16:29

I 'tape' to my sky box. Mainly because some things are more time limited on the 'on demand' stuff (e.g. All4/iplayer) due to rights issues.

Furrydogmum · 21/08/2023 16:30

Can't you have wireless Bluetooth headphones? I'm sure my son does.. We have a virgin tivo box to record on/from..

cantstaymadatyou · 21/08/2023 16:31

Up until a couple of years ago we had a freeview box with a record function. It was quite handy I suppose as you’d always have a series of something to watch. It meant we could cancel Sky so saved lots of money.

If you have a Smart TV you can just download the apps and watch things on the channel’s streaming service. There’s iPlayer, All4, ITVX and others. The main disadvantage is that you have to watch ads (unless you pay for no ad versions). Although now I have Netflix and stuff I don’t miss normal tv at all.

Marsyas · 21/08/2023 16:36

yes, on my Humax box. Not everything is on-demand. I have Sky Arts on Freeview for example, but can't access a catch-up or on-demand version, so if something is on late, or I am out, I "tape" it. Also there are series available on-demand which the platform then changes so you have to pay for, so I prefer to record a series that I might want to watch again if it turns up on a recordable channel.

Also, some platforms like Channel 4 don't have catch-up for something that is on live - so if we wanted to watch, say, Taskmaster on a 15 minute delay because we are picking the kids up from Scouts when it starts, then its easier to record it and watch it 15 minutes behind (sometimes catching up by fastforwarding the ads) than wait an hour for the plus-one channel.
The remote controls for the Humax box are awful though, we are on our second one, the batteries don't sit properly.

Magneta · 21/08/2023 16:38

Yes, DH and our daughter rigged up a box. We mainly use it for watching niche sports on ITV4 without having to delve into the awfulness of ITVX, and being able to forward through the ads. The odd film at Christmas too.

If ITVX wasn't so rubbish at misnaming the days' main events and highlights, and being so damned impossible to find things on, I suspect we wouldn't use it.

Magneta · 21/08/2023 16:39

@Marsyas yes we do that too with sport - want to start the highlights show at 7pm and if it's recorded we can do it on catch up. Makes a difference with the kids being able to watch it before bedtime.
